The website elenin.org repeats several falsehoods

2012 is a hoax!

The website elenin.org uncritically repeats many internet rumors about the comet, spreading false information and fear.

What elenin.org says

Here is a section from the middle of the page:

There appears to be some reservations among amateur astronomy enthusiasts, as well as privately funded entities concerning Leonard Elenin’s discovery of the Comet C/2010 X1. There are the obvious questions of his credentials, his fortuitous luck in tracking down a Magnitude 19 moving object when many more well equipped personages have failed to do so, and more importantly, the lack of any notable press coverage over the event.

Instead, speculation is intensifying that Comet C/2010 X1 / Elenin is actually a cover for the real deal: an old brown dwarf, a sister sun for the our Sol – a moving, planetary-size mass of collapsing clouds with three moons that is on a 3,600 year orbit around the galaxy. It has been referred to as Nibiru (D23K9) by some, and NASA’s seeming reluctance to dispel the notion has only served to increase and indirectly feed the rumor mill to almost breaking point.

The alternative theory that seems to have gained ground recently is that Elenin/Nibiru’s continued approach will eventually see it inadvertently attempting to take control of the Earth’s polarity away from the sun. The contest between Elenin/Nibiru, the sun and earth, coupled with the dynamic influence of other planet-sized mass in our solar system would eventually start to affect and ultimately shatter the eons of magnetic stability on earth, along with the underlying gravitational balance that will precipitate major reactions within the earth’s core as well as on its surface that could very well lead to a global catastrophe. A shift in the earth magnetic pole is widely anticipated, with many pointing to the recent devastating earthquake in Chile as one of the earliest effect of Elenin/Nibiru. NASA has confirmed that the recent quake has shifted the earth’s axis by 3 inches, and shortened the length of our day by 1.26 millionth of a second. However, any attempt to link the incident with the approaching brown dwarf has been dismissed by NASA.

Breaking it down

There appears to be some reservations among amateur astronomy enthusiasts, as well as privately funded entities concerning Leonard Elenin’s discovery of the Comet C/2010 X1.

Who, and why?

There are the obvious questions of his credentials,

What obvious questions? What credentials do you need to find a comet? Most comets are still discovered by amateur astronomers, why is this one unusual?

his fortuitous luck in tracking down a Magnitude 19 moving object when many more well equipped personages have failed to do so

He didn't "track it down", he "found it". That's quite a different thing. "Fortuitous" is the key word here. Finding a comet is part luck, but you only get 'lucky' if you look. People who don't look, don't find comets.

Second, he is much better equipped than most amateurs. He was using a robotic telescope to automatically survey a section of the sky, and discovered the comet in the images taken by it.

… and more importantly, the lack of any notable press coverage over the event.

Why would there be 'press coverage'? It was a small comet, it made the astronomy websites, and then, I would argue, it got far too much 'press' from the conspiracy websites.

The author appears to be working hard at manufacturing controversy where none exists.

There is so much wrong with this statement:

1) Who is speculating? The only speculation we have seen is from the conspiracy websites… the ones who also claim that "The Government" is spraying them with chemicals from airplanes.

2) Brown Dwarfs are not "suns". They occupy the space between really big planets and the smallest stars. They are not really either a planet or a star, but you can find them in orbit around other stars, and sometimes you can find them with planets around them.

By definition1, a star fuses hydrogen. Brown Dwarfs are too small to do this. Therefore they are not "stars" or "suns".

3) It would not be a 'planetary-size mass of collapsing clouds'. A brown dwarf would be about the same size as Jupiter, but denser, more compressed by the extra mass. And while a brown dwarf might have 'moons' or 'planets' around it, no such object has been detected in our solar system. There is no way that a brown dwarf could be in our region of the galaxy and orbit the galaxy in 3,600 years. It takes the solar system about 225 to 250 million years to orbit the galaxy once. It should be about the same period for any object in our neighborhood.

Perhaps the author meant a 3,600 year orbit around our solar system?

It has been referred to as Nibiru (D23K9) by some

Who? Again, the only reference I can find to that number is on conspiracy sites. It doesn't appear to be a number in any catalog that I'm aware of. It doesn't appear in the JPL browser.

… and NASA’s seeming reluctance to dispel the notion has only served to increase and indirectly feed the rumor mill to almost breaking point.

Someone hasn't been paying attention. See our pages on David Morrison and Don Yeomans.

The alternative theory that seems to have gained ground recently is that Elenin/Nibiru’s continued approach will eventually see it inadvertently attempting to take control of the Earth’s polarity away from the sun.

The "earth's polarity" isn't controlled by the sun. The earth's magnetic field is generated within the earth, and it appears to completely ignore the approximate 11-year cycle of magnetic reversals that occur on the sun.

A comet or planet could not 'take control of the Earth's polarity'

The contest between Elenin/Nibiru, the sun and earth, coupled with the dynamic influence of other planet-sized mass in our solar system would eventually start to affect and ultimately shatter the eons of magnetic stability on earth, along with the underlying gravitational balance that will precipitate major reactions within the earth’s core as well as on its surface that could very well lead to a global catastrophe.

Complete bafflegab nonsense. The author is mixing jargon with nonsensical claims that are complete nonsense. The result sounds good to a non-scientist, but is utterly meaningless.

A shift in the earth magnetic pole is widely anticipated

By whom?

… with many pointing to the recent devastating earthquake in Chile as one of the earliest effect of Elenin/Nibiru.

Many who? Ignoring the fact that we have (on average) one "great quake" (over 8.0) per year, and that the Chile quake (8.8) was one sixth2 as large as the 9.6 quake in 1961, why should this be considered 'the earliest effect of Elenin/Nibiru'?

NASA has confirmed that the recent quake has shifted the earth’s axis by 3 inches, and shortened the length of our day by 1.26 millionth of a second.

Both of those are true, but meaningless in terms of your day to day life. Here is a good article regarding these effects.

However, any attempt to link the incident with the approaching brown dwarf has been dismissed by NASA.

As it should be. Note how the author is now referring to "the approaching brown dwarf" as if it was established. This is classic 'question begging' where the thing that the author is trying to show (or prove) is assumed to be true, without any justification or evidence.

Other Claims

Comet Honda (45P/Honda)

Comet 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdusakova is projected to reach aphelion (closest orbital distance to earth) in mid-August 2011

The author mixes his terms here. "aphelion" is the farthest distance from the sun, not the nearest distance to the Earth.

Conclusion

The author promotes several popular rumors about Elenin, but does nothing to build his case, relying on weasel words and circular reasoning.
