It's a way of covering up for the fact that a prediction of a physical event can be definitively shown to have been wrong when it doesn't happen, but it's always possible, provided you don't define what you actually mean, to claim there's been a "world age shift". Meanwhile, nobody in the real world notices a thing.

The Long Count has a number of steps (orders of magnitude), much like we have tens, hundreds, and thousands. For example, our date is now October 4, 2012 … the equivalent Long Count date is: 12.19.19.14.2
The Maya name for the number at the left-hand end (12) is 'baktun'. It is the baktun number that is due to change from 12 to 13 on our date: December 21, 2012 (according to the most popular correlation). The original 'new age' fanatics latched onto this date, and *assumed* that it had some great importance to the rest of the world. Some of them thought it would be the new age of Aquarius (yes, the one from astrology). Some other people (that we now call doomsayers) said that, no, it wouldn't be any new age, hippie, kind of thing, .. they *invented* various world-wide disasters that they said would happen on that date, and ignored the complete lack of any sort of evidence and plausibility for any of it. They just used their own peculiar, apocalyptic world views, that probably originate in Judeo-Christian religious traditions. (Those traditions were based on the persecution of the Jews, and the destruction of Jerusalem in the first century, and haven't got anything to do with this century.)

There is nothing that can transform the worldwide on a short period. Maybe there is some mass media coverage of some single event. But people will talk about it and then continue with their daily businesses. One year later, everybody forgot about it.

Yes, I could have reworded your statement like that myself. When I said "clarify," I was seeking more of an elaboration on what leads you to think that. Provide some examples of a "catastrophic" or "evolutional [sic] change for the better," and explain why you think it is "overdue" or what have you. As Elliott notes, there are numerous problems with claiming that natural events are "overdue" in any but the most general of senses.

We're 'overdue' for a geomagnetic reversal, it hasn't happened in the last 780,000 years or so, well above average, but then there were times where such events took place in quick succession and times when they took an absolute age to occur, a strict average time between reversals doesn't make a whole lot of sense and so neither does saying we're overdue.

We've seen a lot of comments like yours on this forum, and I still have no idea what some folks have in mind when saying things like "something big … life changing or life ending." Can you clarify?

So, some western 'new age' people made interpretations without realizing (or maybe ignoring the fact) that the Mayan's Long Count calendar continues for thousands of our years. It's just the baktun number that changes every 144,000 days. The next change is from 12 to 13. The Mayan date will become 13.0.0.0.0. The next days after that will be 13.0.0.0.1, 13.0.0.0.2, etc.
Also, experts (and the Maya living today) say that the Mayan culture doesn't include concepts like 'doomsday' or the 'end'. Those concepts come from Judeo-Christian religious traditions. They were unfairly (and incorrectly) attached to the Maya and their Long Count calendar by western 'new age' fanatics.

No. In fact, there are many referenced dates in other contexts that reside far into the future,well beyond 2012. One baktun rolls into the next, just like December rolls into January.

It's as good as saying that the world ends every 5125 years. We know it doesn't, we know that mass extinctions don't happen on a regular 5125 year cycle, the notion is simply absurd. The Maya started this count of 13 baktuns in our year 3114 BC, if we are to believe that the last date of the count will bring the end of the world, then we must assume that the start date was the beginning of time, so to speak. Of course, the Maya would have had their own myths and reasons of why this count exists and what it means, modern misinterpretations are simply putting words in the ancient Maya's mouths.

The Maya couldn't predict their own civilisations downfall, so why people think they could have predicted ours is anyone's guess. There is a monument in palenque that has an inscription that dates to our year 4772, the inscription states that the Maya will be celebrating their great king Pekal in this year, so clearly the Maya thought that their civilisation would exist unchanged until that time.

Proponents and so called experts ignore these facts of course, but fairytales don't get along with facts.

I agree with the last thing you said as well, In my own sort of way that's what I was implying (probably not so much in this post). The calendar has nothing to do with us, only their own civilisation. They believed that they'd still be the dominant civilisation now.
But with such limited resources they must have made a lot of errors even in their own version of time regardless if it would effect us or not.

The Long Count isn't related to any natural span of time such as the month or year, so it can't accumulate errors because it's not being measured against anything. It's just a count of days. Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, etc. Day 1,872,000 (according to the estimate accepted by many) is 21st December 2012.

They didn't stop anything, the calendar is a count of 5125 years, it's a cyclical calendar. The last "cycle" was in 3114 BC, add 5125 years and we arrive at 2012. That's what all the fuss is about, they never ended the calendar because like any other calendar, it's a count of days (or in this case years) that ends and starts over.

The count of 2012 years has absolutely nothing to do with the Maya, the year 2012 is based on the Christian belief that Christ was born 2012 years ago. The Maya correlation, known as the GMT, brings us to the year 2012 as the end of the long count.

The Maya were obsessed with the notion of time, hence why their calanders were so accurate, but of course not as accurate as our current ones. Regardless, the Maya had their own culture and nothing else in mind when designing these calendars, it has nothing to do with our current civilisation, apart from the fact one of their cycles just so happens to land on a current date. It's completely meaningless to us.

In other words, 1508 Haab = 1507 solar years, and it's more than twenty times more accurate (error: 1 second) than Gregorian calendar (error: 27 seconds).

So every 1507 solar years their clock is only 1 second off? What about the rest of the years how big is that error?
And why are you comparing it with a Gregorian while we have currently atomic clocks which correct every single day, week and year? We don't have to wait 1507 years to have an accurate time. We just look at the atomic clock.

This is just retrospective numerology. Who says anything about this period being important to the Mayans? It's just a question of finding a suitable solar year/calendar year ratio by testing various integer divisors until you hit the right number.
It's rather like claiming that if the Mayans had 355 steps on one pyramid and 113 on the next one, they must have known the value of pi to six figures because that's what you get when you divide the two numbers.
