Hi, folks.

Has anybody considered that this is just a basic application of Benford's Law and mammalian pattern finding? With 12 or 24 hours, 60 minutes, 28 to 31 days, 12 months - we are going to see patterns with 10, 11 or 12 more commonly than any other double digit numbers. Of the three, 11 clearly has symmetrical attractiveness?

Times of equinoxes and solstices are published by the US Naval Observatory here.
Or there's a more accurate but slightly more DIY method available by using NASA's HORIZONS website. Calculate the apparent ecliptic longitude of the Sun and determine the instant at which it reaches 270°. This is the time of the December solstice, by definition.
As I said above, there's more about it here.

It's just a coincidence that the Long Count Baktun 13 rollover date falls on a solstice. The end of the previous Baktun period was 18th September 1618. It's a pity because it means that instead of the rollover date having no event whatever of astronomical significance, there is the solstice which, although entirely routine, gives them a handle on to which to hang their ridiculous claims.

Also a pity is the fact that the exact time of the solstice was originally estimated to be 11:11 UTC, but was corrected to 11:12 about 3 years ago (it depends on the unpredictable rate of rotation of the Earth). If the time had been published as 11:12 from the start, none of the numerologists would have latched on to it and we'd never have heard a word about it.
More here.

From what I've gathered, it appears the doomsayers somehow think the maya had some hidden knowledge of the winter solstice and that it somehow relates to the end of the world. Exactly what is so harmful about the winter solstice when it's been going on every single year?

Some people noticed that 11:11 UTC/GMT (actually closer to 11:12) will be the time of the Northern Hemisphere's winter solstice on December 21 this year, and for some reason decided to attach some significance to it. However, it really doesn't mean anything at all, because it's a coincidence. It will be the first baktun number change since 3114BC that just happens to be on the same day as the solstice. There have been 12 baktun number changes since 3114BC that haven't been on a solstice - summer *or winter. And.. the next 7 baktun number changes after this year will also *not be on a summer or winter solstice. You can see all the baktun date correlations on a Wikipedia chart if you scroll down a bit on this page.

Also, there isn't any evidence that the ancient Maya or Aztecs knew that *any of the baktun changes would happen on the same day as a solstice, and there isn't any evidence that they knew anything about a phenomenon called 'precession'. That's when a slight wobble of the Earth's north-south axis over thousands of years causes the solstice dates to vary by a few days. (By the way, the Northern Hemisphere's winter solstice is the date when the Sun appears to reach its lowest point in the winter sky - well it would be if you could see it in the winter sky! .. And the exact time is just determined using a calculation made by scientists and astronomers. If you were just looking towards the Sun you wouldn't be able to judge when the exact time happened.) … (Another interesting fact! - Two thousand years ago the Northern Hemisphere's winter solstice was on December 25.) … If the ancient Maya and Aztecs knew nothing about precession they would have no way of knowing which baktun changes a *long way into the future would or wouldn't be on the same date as a solstice, and anyway what difference would it make? As far as I know nothing significant ever happens on winter or summer solstices, other than the Sun appearing to reach its lowest or highest points in our sky.
- -

The twin towers event was worse than all these events, dude. You can not just compare.

How is it "worse"? In which way?

Also, how could a numeral system developed in India that was adopted by Arabs and then transferred to Europe in Middle Ages have any "cosmic" meaning whatsoever? The numbers we today use (1234567890) are just a mutually agreed standard, a social convention. If history went some other way, we could use god-knows-what system instead of these. Would that other numeral system also have the same "magical" meaning and properties?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic_numerals

The same with the year 2012. Why would a random year in a random calendar system (Gregorian in this case) have any "cosmic" meaning? If Charles Martel had lost the Battle of Tours in 732, we could be using the Islamic calendar today instead of the Gregorian one. Would Islamic calendar also have something special reserved for their year 1433 (or 1434)?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregorian_calendar

Not to mention that humans didn't even have one mutually agreed-upon standard time before the industrial revolution:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Time

Prior to the introduction of standard time, each municipality around the civilized world set its official clock, if it had one, according to the local position of the Sun (see solar time). This served adequately until the introduction of the steam engine, the telegraph, and rail travel, which made it possible to travel fast enough over long distances to require almost constant re-setting of timepieces as a train progressed in its daily run through several towns. Standard time, where all clocks in a large region are set to the same time, was established to solve this problem. Chronometers or telegraphy were used to synchronize these clocks.

Also, for the vast majority of the human history, we even didn't have any kind of clocks in the first place.

What I'm saying is that all these things - the numbers you use, the time system you use, the calendar you use, the clocks you use, also the calendar the Mayans used - are random human inventions. The universe/nature does not give a flying… horse on what sort of calculating systems some random aliens on some random planet around some random star in a random galaxy use.

EDIT:

And I am several months late already in this conversation! Oh well :-D I never did like this crazy notion of "universal time" anyway…

Someone noticed that if I add up the numbers of the date of the solstice, so:
21/12/12 - 2 +1 +1 +2 +1 +2 = 11?
Sure, it's just a coincidence and not mean anything. But it is rather curious.

But it is wrong we are not in the year 12… we are in the year 2012 and

21/12/12 - 2 +1 +1 +2 +1 +2 = 9
Day 2+1=3 Month 1+2=3 Year 1+2=3 added up 3+3+3=9

However if you want to do the proper way … 21/12/2012 : 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 0 + 1 + 2 = 11
21/12/2012 Day 2+1=3 Month 1+2=3 Year 2+0+1+2=5 add all together 3+3+5=11

Now numerology is stupid as it means absolutely nothing… they mean nothing other than to count and track items. They can not predict no matter what sequence of numbers we use, it will still just be a number. Nothing more, nothing less.

The only thing numerology is good for is codes and mix it with parables and you have the bible

If we'd had 12 fingers, no doubt doomsday would have been predicted for the years we call 1728 (12 x 12 x 12) and 3456 (12 x 12 x 12 x 2).
That leaves aside the fact that calendars have arbitrary starting dates anyway.

I don't get all this time date and numerology thing predicating disasters and the like

I think the basic reasoning behind 2012 is numerology. When the world failed to cooperate with the predictions for it to end in the year 2000, the numerology nuts looked for another calendar reaching a round number and happened across the Mayan Long Count, which reaches date 13.0.0.0.0. This date has 4 zeroes, much better than the paltry 3 in 2000.
One can understand people in the year 1000 expecting doomsday or the second coming. After all, superstition and lack of education were prevalent. But in the year 2000? It shows how little some people have moved on.

I don't get all this time date and numerology thing predicating disasters and the like, I mean time and dates and the calendar are man made and only relative to Earth if on Earth. The rest of the universive including mother nature doesn't give a rats arse about time, dates, numbers… it hapens when it happens.

As Chance says time itself only happens becase we acknowledge it. The concept of time has evolved of ever since we started to track the stars and the seasons here on Earth… and man only tracked the seasons so we knew when to plant crops and when the wild heards would be back for hunting etc

I just don't get it…

and the sad thing is people believe this crap, they don't know their own history so the believe anything they are told, and worse the don't cross reference anything they are told or taught with legitimate and realiable sources…

Don't believe every thing on the net, don't believe everything thing in wikipedia and most defenity disreguard youtube as a source of infomation…

Reason to disreguard youtube… (Had this discussion before somewhere on here I think)

Any one can make a movie, But very few can write legitmate papers which you have to read and make sense.

Add disasters images. Instant visualuastion of doom and gloom, sets emotion. Reading and concentrating take longer and most people give up reading and comprending it. A movie is easier and does more damage.

Movies involves more of the human senses to capture its audience, add sound and threatening and or sad music, example if some of these disaster videos had happy clown music… more people would see through the hoax. Next time block out the music and play in your head some circus music…

Tell the story and mush facts… as long as the two above are working this is overall irrelevant.

Movies can say a lot more in a shorter period of time… those with short attention spans (like me) get the message quicker with out lossing the audiance…

What people don't consider is that time only exists because we acknowledge it.

Funny thing really, people all say. Time is time and the date is just the date but no one has fully explained why.
Time was recorded so we could get an idea of what point we're at in the day, there's no other reason it exists, it's just so we know where we are kinda like a map :)
11:11 is just another time, when we look at a clock as see a weird number on the clock it means nothing, it's just the time. What it was made for, the end of the world never anticipated that we'd start recording time the way we do. Neither did we at that matter, we just did.

In fact, every time I consciously think anything about 11:11 before looking at the clock, it NEVER is. Not ONCE has that been the case. It only happens when my mind ISN'T expecting it or looking for it.

Would you look at that :)
Consciously you don't want too see it, and consciously you're not aware.
If you try and look for it, you're not going to find it.
If you don't, you'll just notice it. Why? because you're more aware of whatevery the time is when you're looking at it consciously. But when you subconsciously look at it and notice 11:11 you become interested, and THAT is where your conscience takes over and you become aware.
Understand how it works now?

Oh and another thing, it does happen to everyone ^^ We all notice 11:11 here because we all talk about it.
So naturally, when the time hits 11:11 about 70% of the people on this page see it. We just don't freak out when we do.

May i point out that you posted everything you said at 8:29, NOT significant.
A minute longer, it would have been. Why? Because during that comment you where not aware. Time didn't matter you just wanted to get this comment posted so you could try and prove us wrong.
Little did you know that small detail could be used against you and your reply (if i get one) could likely be a double digit.
You might feel like you're not looking for the number but because in the back of your mind you're aware of the double digit theory you will notice it everywhere! Not intentionally. But why do you notice it? That's simple.

The reason you notice numbers like 11:11, 2:00 3:55 and all those, is because it's more of a round number for a start. When it's 2:23 do you say, it's 2:23 right now. No, you often say it's 2:25, or even 2:30 those that say 2:30 are less likely to notice 2:25, and those that say 2:25 will notice both.
Also, when someone asks you the time at 2:23, you tend to look back at the clock at 2:25. Because now you've said it you're subconsciously aware and without thinking about it you'll look at the time at exactly 2:25 because you've subconsciously noticed it.
I bet if you meet a good hypnotist he'd likely be able to make you go home all day and and frequently check the clock until it hits 3:00 exactly and without realising make you notice that specific time alot more, you really be able to recall subconsciously looking at the clock every now and then as you walk in the room but the only time that will be on your mind will be 3:00 and at that point (as far as you're concerned) that is the only time you looked at or "noticed"

Right now you're likely thinking, what the hell is this guy talking about -_-
So for that sake, i'm going to show you from a different perspective.
You walk into a bar and that night you speak to alot of different girls, and you look at alot of different girls.
A particular girl you look at is extremely attractive, just your type and breifly looks over at you and maybe even smiles. But nothing else happens that night.
This girl could be an example of the 11:11, and everyone else is about 2:34, 10:24, 4:59 Those other girls you looked at wont be remembered the next morning but 11:11 girl is that one you'll be thinking about for a while the next day until you go out again for another night.
so the more significant a number is, the more likely you are the remember it. Of course another way to look at it is, 11:11 is just a more attractive number. its self, it's the second time in the day where all the numbers are the same, and the only time of day if you don't read 24 hour clock. so this number is bound to catch you attention regardless if you've ever heard of numerology or not.

I have thrown together a basic experiment to prove this idea wrong to yourselves.
Now that after reading this you should be aware that you're specifically looking for a that specific time and not just automatically looking at the time because of some supernatural force, just like 11:11 girl, it caught your attention ;)
so what i want you to do, (if this still freaks anyone out) don't think about numerology, no wait, actually do think about it. Every now and then it should spring to mind when you hear someone talking about it or you see it on the internet when you're browsing look at the time at that exact moment, DON'T WAIT!
just look. and you'll notice a normal time like 2:49 which it is now :) Because you're not subconsciously looking for a specific time you're just looking at the time.

Now i never figured this out from the 11:11 theory, i figured this out from 23, a movie that game out starring Jim Carey about the end of the world and how the numbers form together and relate to every date and significant even that has ever happened.
Of course, only if you add a lot of random number from other dates and put 2012 into the equation and throw other random things in do you get that number -_-
I then began to notice 23 spring up everywhere. I'd get numbers and add them together and get freaked out when it added up to 23.
This was because in the back of my mind, i wanted them to add up to 23. So i was looking for it :) now that i've gone past that phase, i don't see 23 anywhere now!…except in this post -_-
I hope this helps!

I think the about11:11 numerology is stupid. There was an 11/11/11 at 11:11 am so what. The world is still here as I know it. There is no relvence to the number 11 and 2012 at all. So what there is a 21/12/12 date coming up a hundred and one years from now and there was a 21/12/12 back about 99 years ago. This is a major problem with their system as this happens every hundred years. I guess they didn't consider this flaw either

By the same logic, 11:11 is therefore a farce, because it's really 2:2. And 11:38 is really 2:11. Like already stated, you're selectively adding numbers.

Like 3WME, I would wonder what point you hope to make. 11/11/11 11:11 came and went. Nothing special happened.

So now you're selectively adding only the numbers which make 11 huh? That would be confirmation bias, and bias is to be avoided in all it's forms when conducting science.

Seeing as you appear to be reading through this thread yet offering nothing but entry level maths, I must ask just what your interest is with the number 11. What point are you trying to prove?

So where's the other 11? It's 11:11, it's not 11, 11 is just 11, but 11:11 is somehow magical, so where's the other 11?

And if that sentence didn't highlight the pointlessness of adding meaningless numbers, I'm not sure what will.

One should always be suspicious of people on Facebook that claim to 1) be someone unlikely (Jesus friended me!) or 2) Too readily agree with anything you say.

Here on 'hoax' you won't get much of the former and none of the latter. As tests of verisimilitude go, its not bad.

The human brain is an amazing and difficult to understand thing, which we will be studying for centuries. Why did you imagine what you did? What do these images mean to you? Why do you attach significance to Hollywood creations of "aliens"? These are all good questions. My comrades assume you are "barking mad". My guess is you are just a typical young person who throws themselves into any new and appealing discovery, only to get bored later and discard it. When I was a kid, I liked guns and explosions. Then lasers and books. Then dinosaurs and girls. Then baseball and girls. Then computers (hand crank variety, it was the dark ages) and girls. Then astronomy and girls. Some things stick with you, I guess.

Always remember Occam's razor. Is there an easier explanation to your mental images than a world-wide conspiracy among role-players? You decide.
