God forbid that a company handling orders for grave liners have a supply of … you know … grave liners. The number of liners mentioned in many of the crank articles was also wildly exaggerated.

This is just like the satellite photo of a North Korean prison that morphed via Internet into a "FEMA death camp."

I think that is very important to point out. Even ignoring Bast's "excursions" of logic, the fact remains that geomagnetic reversals are not overnight or even single-year events, regardless of their frequency.

If a few more excursions were found, then the frequency could rise to once every 40,000 years, which would make us due for one.

How might these excursions be found? Are these data incorrect? The Laschamp excursion is shown, followed by a rise in VADM (virtual axial dipole moment) to its currently high figure in comparison with historical levels. There would have to be a steep drop for at least 1,000 years in order to reach a level at which an excursion might take place.

I strongly agree that an ancient culture could not have predicted a reversal for a certain date, such as 2012. But that doesn't mean the general risk/fear/concern should be downplayed.

We don't downplay it because an ancient culture never said it, we downplay it because there is no indication in any data that suggests such an event is happening as we speak or is near to happening in the not too distant future. Yes, life carried on during previous excursions and major reversals. But just because there were no mass extinctions, that does not mean we would be safe from harm. If our magnetic field strength drops to just 5% of what it is currently, we could be at risk:

power grid failure

A single satellite is warning us of solar storms in time for us to shut down and protect aspects of our power grids. To my mind, with 5% of our magnetic shield strength, it would be inevitable that we would lose our satellites and then our power grids. The only real question is how soon into the reversal process are we at risk?

Some doomsday nutters on Youtube have noticed it and made a big deal out of it, (surprise, surprise) following a story in the media a while back about an airport in Florida which changed its runway heading numbers. It's nothing unusual though and the media probably only wrote a story about it because it was a slow news day.

Airport runway headings are only numbered to the nearest ten degrees, but because of the gradual wandering of the geomagnetic poles, the numbers are sometimes changed to keep up with the wandering. For example, London Heathrow's two main runways changed a few years ago from 28R/28L (280 degrees Right and Left) and 10R/10L (100 degrees Right and Left) to 27R/27L and 09R/09L.

Compare the Magnetic Pole Shift article on this site: "While it is true that the Earth's magnetic field strength is currently declining, magnetic Pole reversals occur over the course of several hundred years, possibly up to a few thousand years. They do not switch overnight."

Not really. We know there are times of massive activity and times where it's quiet, and we know that the majority of those took thousands of years. What we've got now is perhaps one of the shortest and most recent instances of those kinds of differences, and, as you say, yet more evidence in support that there's nothing on the horizon nor on human timescales.

What this will amount to is little more than "Ah, it can happen then!" "Yeah, and you could be hit by a car, you could be caught in an earthquake, you could be struck by lightning, but nothing points to that happening in your future".

I don't know of any proponents reading PhysOrg though. Best wait until it lands on space.com or something. If that's even in their remit. Or perhaps the Daily Mail, if they care.

On the assumption that such an event happened, we note that it still took hundreds of years, the Earth still had a magnetic field (just, but it had one) and life still went on before, during and afterwords.

So looks like we might have to do some backpeddling. There is still no evidence of the event being harmful though, so if any doomsdsay nutters find that Physorg article it still debunks any claims they make that it would cause harm.

There's a typo in the article, the scale is actually in increments of 100,000 years, not the 10,000 it states. So the black bar is a period of 0.78 Ma (megaannum), or 780,000 years. The dotted line is the average strength since… well, the earliest date it can be measured.

Some re-writing of the page is necessary.

There is something about the magnetic field graph I don't understand however: if the jagged line on the right represents the variations in the field's strength over the last 780,000 years, how can the average strength then be all the way to the left of that jagged line? At first glance I would expect it to be around 5 or 6; almost the entire jagged line is to the right of the average, and the 3 or 4 times it comes to the left, it's only a relatively short period of time, and also less than it deviates to the right.

Because nobody else brought this up, it is likely that I just misinterpreted the graph, or the explanation of what it means. If so, could someone please tell me where I go wrong? I have some friends to convince that we aren't headed for a magnetic field reversal disaster, and I thought I'd use this graph to help prove my point; of course I will be more convincing if I actually know what it represents ;)

You for got the 7500 aftershocks Christchurch NZ has had since september last year. I suspect Japan will be in the 10,000 aftershocks before it goes back to normal… and by the way normal for Japan is the same as in NZ.

Napier 1935 (yes a few years back) had 8500 aftershocks. New Zealand alone gets over 15,000 Earthquakes a year. There has been no increase on average. There has been no increase world wide on average.
