I know. It's the same as saying "the illuminati keeps secrets and doesn't tell us the truth!" Yet thousands of conspiracy theorists seem to know about these secrets and so kindly plaster them all over the Internet and assorted sandwich boards…so obviously the illuminati is very bad at keeping secrets..since everyone claims to know the truth….

See that reasoning pretty much blows this theory out of the water. It's much cheaper to just burn the bodies or pile them in mass graves and forget about them. But apparently, according to conspiracy theorists FEMA is a bunch of evil bastards who want to kill us all, but make sure we have pleasant funerals.

Okay…? So? People die in natural disasters and you have to put them in something.. I still fail to see how this proves a non existent NWO, pole shift, or end of the world…if the world were ending why would they need coffins? If there were really "FEMA concentration camps" and they were going to commit some kind of mass genocide, sounds like a pretty diabolical plan.. why would they bother putting people in coffins?

if a magnetic pole shift happens every 100 years

Where did you see that? The article you're commenting on says:

The last reversal was about 780,000 years ago.

I think you're mixing up the comments a bit, it takes (at the very least) hundreds of years for a pole reversal to complete, once it's begun.

@metalangel
It does not occur every 100 years or so, it`s a looooooong process and it is not something that you see or feel, the Earts does not flip over all of a sudden, it´s not scheduled to take place in one particular moment. It takes it´s time, and we´re talking about really really long time.

Sincerely.
Igor

It started with photos from the warehouse of a grave liner manufacturer (Vantage Products, if memory serves), and this morphed into "FEMA stockpiling coffins," and the legs have grown ever since. God forbid that a company handling orders for grave liners have a supply of … you know … grave liners. The number of liners mentioned in many of the crank articles was also wildly exaggerated.

This is just like the satellite photo of a North Korean prison that morphed via Internet into a "FEMA death camp."

the Doomsday vault rushed to be built

Such as?

Svalbard is not a "doomsday vault," nor is it the only seed vault in the world, nor was its construction rushed.

strange sounds

Yeah, a YouTube hoax about which we've seen a thousand threads started.

weird clouds

What?

volcano's going off

Like we see every day?

earthquakes in various places

Like we see every day?

the waves roaring, the wind blowing,

Sarcasm, I presume.

and above all else, the greatest hint, the ANIMAL's "lost" and their migratory paths upset…dolphins, sharks, birds, fish, crabs,

Animals lost. Right.
I guess the main claims/points are:

FEMA requisition for "under water" body bags, martial law orders in place, camps being built in a hurry, the Doomsday vault rushed to be built, strange sounds, weird clouds, volcano's going off, earthquakes in various places, the waves roaring, the wind blowing, and above all else, the greatest hint, the ANIMAL's "lost" and their migratory paths upset…dolphins, sharks, birds, fish, crabs,

If any of that is true, I don't know. This is a claim from a commenter, I quote

"The government, from what I know, is prepared for a February 2013 pole shift. My father works for NAWC-TSD and although they are responsible for training simulators, training manuals, and the like, he did receive a briefing the beginning of the year regarding solar storms climaxing this year and a possible pole shift between the end of November 2012 and February 2013." Probably b.s.

Are these data incorrect? The Laschamp excursion is shown, followed by a rise in VADM (virtual axial dipole moment) to its currently high figure in comparison with historical levels. There would have to be a steep drop for at least 1,000 years in order to reach a level at which an excursion might take place.

it would be inevitable that we would lose our satellites and then our power grids.

Not with 1,000 years in which to work out how to solve the problem.

But that doesn't mean the general risk/fear/concern should be downplayed.

We don't downplay it because an ancient culture never said it, we downplay it because there is no indication in any data that suggests such an event is happening as we speak or is near to happening in the not too distant future. That is the point of actively gathering data on the issue, across multiple fields of science. Don't forget that.

This latest news brings up an interesting idea. The number of excursions (that we know of) in the last 780,000 years are 12 - or one in every 65,000 years. Because the Laschamp event was always considered to be an excursion, these were seen as minor, insignificant events. Now we have to consider the possibility that every excursion is partial evidence for a short-term reversal. If a few more excursions were found, then the frequency could rise to once every 40,000 years, which would make us due for one.

Yes, life carried on during previous excursions and major reversals. But just because there were no mass extinctions, that does not mean we would be safe from harm. If our magnetic field strength drops to just 5% of what it is currently, we could be at risk:

satellite failure
power grid failure

A single satellite is warning us of solar storms in time for us to shut down and protect aspects of our power grids. To my mind, with 5% of our magnetic shield strength, it would be inevitable that we would lose our satellites and then our power grids. The only real question is how soon into the reversal process are we at risk?

I strongly agree that an ancient culture could not have predicted a reversal for a certain date, such as 2012. But that doesn't mean the general risk/fear/concern should be downplayed.

As Juju said, the only "significant" change would be the aiport markings changes. But no one really notices that.

Some doomsday nutters on Youtube have noticed it and made a big deal out of it, (surprise, surprise) following a story in the media a while back about an airport in Florida which changed its runway heading numbers. It's nothing unusual though and the media probably only wrote a story about it because it was a slow news day.

Airport runway headings are only numbered to the nearest ten degrees, but because of the gradual wandering of the geomagnetic poles, the numbers are sometimes changed to keep up with the wandering. For example, London Heathrow's two main runways changed a few years ago from 28R/28L (280 degrees Right and Left) and 10R/10L (100 degrees Right and Left) to 27R/27L and 09R/09L.

Here's a pretty good article from NOAA about the wandering of the magnetic poles:

http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag/GeomagneticPoles.shtml

There's no mass extinction event that correlates with the last reversal, so it certainly doesn't appear so. Remember that the magnetic pole is completely different to the physical rotation pole. The magnetic field is driven by currents generated in the molten liquid outer core as earth rotates, so the solid mass of the earth plays little to no role in the generation and polarity of the magnetic field. Compasses would need calibrated, nothing more.

The idea of a possible "rapid" reversal isn't new, and I think it's come up here before.

The article states: "The field geometry of reversed polarity, with field lines pointing into the opposite direction when compared to today's configuration, lasted for only about 440 years, and it was associated with a field strength that was only one quarter of today's field," explains Norbert Nowaczyk. "The actual polarity changes lasted only 250 years. They do not switch overnight."

I see no reason to amend that position.

What we've got now is perhaps one of the shortest and most recent instances of those kinds of differences, and, as you say, yet more evidence in support that there's nothing on the horizon nor on human timescales.

What this will amount to is little more than "Ah, it can happen then!" "Yeah, and you could be hit by a car, you could be caught in an earthquake, you could be struck by lightning, but nothing points to that happening in your future".

I don't know of any proponents reading PhysOrg though.
The process is so slow it is even unlikely to disrupt migratory animals such as migratory birds, whales, narwals and dolphins, they have good enough built in navigation systems to slowly adapt as the change happens. So yes, our distanct ancestor's compassess will look nothing like ours, but life on Earth will go on as it always has. Tech like sattelites may have to be reconfigured in space to track the new magnetic positions in orbit, and sat navs may slowly change, but this doesn't mean it will effect any part of life on earth other than a few companies cashing in on the reconfigurations as magentic North moves, lol. There is NO drop in the Earth's magnetic field during a magnetic pole shift, the magnetosphere continues to sheild the Earth from the sun's powerful rays as it always has.

Ah-ha! Scratch what I said earlier, I was wrong.

There's a typo in the article, the scale is actually in increments of 100,000 years, not the 10,000 it states. So the black bar is a period of 0.78 Ma (megaannum), or 780,000 years. The dotted line is the average strength since… well, the earliest date it can be measured.

Edit: Or what bikenbeer2000 said. I'll shut up now.

The text is actually wrong. The increments are 100,000 years, the black vertical bar represents the full 780,000 years since the last reversal and the dashed vertical line isn't the average, but is the critical value of intensity below which Guyodo and Valet (1999) consider several directional excursions to have occurred.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Brunhes_geomagnetism_western_US.png

Some re-writing of the page is necessary.

oh yeah, now I see it, thank you! I hadn't looked closely enough to the timescale; because the text says the thick black bar represents the time since the last reversal, I assumed that meant the full 780,000 years… thanks for clearing that up!

The part of the graph that's displayed (the jagged line) only covers about the last 70,000 years (the scale on the left is in increments of 10,000 years), but the line marking the average is actually the average field strength calculated over the last 780,000 years.

Hi, what a great site this is! As addicted as I have become to amaze myself about the total nonsense a lot of people choose to believe, there is a risk involved: one easily gets the impression that the whole world has gone crazy, so it's actually quite soothing to hear some sense for a change :)

There is something about the magnetic field graph I don't understand however: if the jagged line on the right represents the variations in the field's strength over the last 780,000 years, how can the average strength then be all the way to the left of that jagged line? At first glance I would expect it to be around 5 or 6; almost the entire jagged line is to the right of the average, and the 3 or 4 times it comes to the left, it's only a relatively short period of time, and also less than it deviates to the right.

Because nobody else brought this up, it is likely that I just misinterpreted the graph, or the explanation of what it means. If so, could someone please tell me where I go wrong? I have some friends to convince that we aren't headed for a magnetic field reversal disaster, and I thought I'd use this graph to help prove my point; of course I will be more convincing if I actually know what it represents ;)
