Numerous ancient cultures had some variation of flood myth, as floods, even catastrophic floods, are extremely common. Most of the tales bear little or no resemblance to the biblical myth, aside from a flood and occasionally a deity being involved.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deluge_myth

The Sumerians didn't know much about the Solar System. Even if they had recorded references to some tenth planet in an eccentric orbit (which they didn't, to my knowledge), they were obviously mistaken.

I can't speak of the flood side of things, but yes, the wild claims of mysterious planets just do not exist in the Sumerian texts, only in Sitchin's books.

And as Kevin says, there's no evidence of Sumerian's knowing that the Sun was the center of the Solar System, let alone that there was a 10th planet - they knew of Saturn, but no further.

I really doubt the Summerians knew about orbits, let alone highly elliptical orbit….

Found this clip on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqeTMdtLWcA, overall pure nonsense but there was one part that confused me a little. They claim that the Summerians talked about both a great flood taking place way before the biblical and the appearance of a tenth planet that had an highly elliptical orbit (around 5:00 in the clip). Isn't that a rewrite of Sitchins claims, i.e. the result of really poor translations and grave misinterpretations?
