Well, I'm a computer geek, and this is worse than Y2K. I went through the whole Y2K from the corporate IT side. Execs would ask me all the time Are we Y2K compliant? Eventually I started answering them with obvious sarcasm, like No, the gearshift knobs on our forklifts are stamped with 2-digit year codes, obviously they will fall off in unison on January 1st, 2000. We should replace them..

They got the point.

Y2K was also a 'grownup' problem to kids. They didn't care. They sniggered about it mostly, because they understood that it was hysteria.

2012 is very different, and in my opinion, very much worse.

I think this is a bit worse then Y2K as that was only technological
stuff from what i remember. These people who support 2012 actually believe some wacky things from people with no qulifications to talk about anything and a lot of them like say the Hysteria Channel slander the Mayans by having random authors making bogus claims about what their calendar said or what Nostradomis said or in most cases didn't say and come up with a whole shitload of lies to make their programs more "entertaining".

I'm in my 20s and don't have the attention span for more than 10-15 minutes, but of course, I also like to watch Cartoons. Old cartoons. As well as old shows. Banana Splits, in particular.

Wait.. How is that relevant?

You actually needed to say it?

Actually saying nothing, instead of saying something, is kind of like standing on the street and watching someone get mugged, but not doing anything about it, but then yelling at someone who tries to help the victim. It's a ridiculous logic.

Example: I've had discussions with people who are idiots. Sure, people may already know that they're idiots, but why not go ahead and call them an idiot anyway? At least when you say it, it's there for future reference for people who had no knowledge of this fact before-hand.

Somewhat related note:
Anyone else notice how we have to explain the most simplistic things to people?
Makes me feel like a.. teacher. (Cue dramatic music)

I have presented to 2nd grade kids, but not specifically on 2012… general astro. At 7yrs old they don't have the attention span for more than 10-15 minutes.

You know, I was right where you are about 4 years ago when I first heard about this. I had pretty much the same reaction as you are having right now. I couldn't believe that anyone would believe it.

That changed for me drastically about 2 years ago. I was giving an astronomy presentation to 5th graders. I had been hearing about the '2012' stuff for about 2 years by then. I was confronted by two 5th grade girls, who were absolutely terrified.

They were convinced, absolutely convinced, that what they had seen and read was true, that "the government" was lying to cover it up, that the school system was toeing the line, and that they, and their families were going to die in 2012.

Since that point I have been confronted by I-kid-you-not hundreds of people, both young and adult, who are scared by this.

So the question isn't whether we needed to say it, obviously we did. The first question is what should we do about it?

So, pretend you are talking to a terrified 5th grader. What would you say to them, without insulting them or making them more afraid, that would convince them that 2012 is just a hoax?

You're kidding, right? You seriously started a site to say it's all BS? You actually needed to say it? Why is it so much to ask that folks use their common sense? Y2K, Jehova's witnesses incorrectly predicting the end of the world no less than FOUR times? And this is going to be any different how, really? Come on.
