I didn't need to be corrected twice. In fact my initial post even has a clear indication of agreeing with Nurse.

Really, uh… do something more useful than responding with a dumbed-down version of what Guru said, already =P

I meant if they give you those "Six Months to Live" stories, you see a lot of cases where people took action against it and swung around.

I know there's some extreme cases of cancer that will tear you apart, but the more common cases are being dealt with.

Of course, yeah. You're right. Just, you know. Blegh. No point to make. You're right.

I think the sad part is, Nurse, that's… that's pretty bogus too.

Not really. "Cancer" is a very general phenomenon. Some varieties can kill you quite quickly, and there isn't much you or anyone else can do about it. Others are more amenable to treatment. It's true that great strides have been taken.

Cancer can go into remission, but we can't undo the one-two punch anti-oncogene mutation that allows it to occur.

Anyway, that's all completely out of bounds. Just wanted to make that note.

… I think the sad part is, Nurse, that's… that's pretty bogus too. The advances in cancer treatment are pretty amazing. There's no easy 'cure' for it, but reversals (HAH SEE WHAT I DID THERE!) are possible.

Wait, they may have been a bad joke considering the topic.

Uh.

Uh..

Uh…

World wasn't torn apart before, won't be torn apart now?

Yep. That.

Deal with it.

You remember correctly. This is from our Magnetic Pole Shift page:

Also, the magnetic poles wander now. Various expeditions have reached the NMP (North Magnetic Pole): In 1831 it was found at Cape Adelaide on the Boothia Peninsula. It was in a slightly different location in 1903. It was later found at Allen Lake on Prince of Wales Island. The Canadian government has made several measurements since, which show that the NMP is continually moving northwest. In 1996 an expedition certified its location by magnetometer and theodolite at +78.595, -104. Its estimated 2005 position was +82.7, -114.4, to the west of Ellesmere Island, the biggest of the Queen Elizabeth Islands, in Canada. During the 20th century it has moved 1,100 km, and since 1970 its rate of motion has accelerated from 9 km/year to 41 km/year. If it maintained its present speed and direction it would reach Siberia in about 50 years, but it is expected to veer from its present course and slow down.

This movement is on top of a daily movement in which the NMP describes a rough ellipse, with a maximum deviation of 80 km from its mean position. This effect is due to disturbances of the geomagnetic field by charged particles from the Sun.

I assume you mean a magnetic pole reversal, since a rapid rotational pole reversal is a physical impossibility, as discussed here.
The fact that a magnetic pole reversal can't take place in 2012 is discussed here. The Earth's current magnetic field strength is too high for a reversal to occur. If it decreased steadily over the next 1,000 years, it might then become possible. To use an analogy that I've used before, rain can't be predicted. But if there's a clear blue sky from horizon to horizon yet someone tells me it will rain in one minute, I will confidently tell them they're wrong.
NASA's Near Earth Object Program has verified that there's no large object out there that can slam into us. There are smaller, unknown objects which could cause localised damage, but certainly nothing on the scale of the alleged Planet X.
Cranks like Geryl and Rand are always certain they can't be wrong. Blind inability to see a different point of view must be part of their psychological make up.

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts. - Bertrand Russell

Nice one Moo, nice one.

But yes, we know these sorts of things happen, we know they have happened, we know they're likely to happen again, but to suggest that, for example, the Sun will shoot out a CME that was flip the poles is ridiculous, or that a planet will magnetically pull the Earth about so that it rotates upside or whatever is nonsense, and everything we know about science shows that.

Correct me, if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that I am..

Pole reversals aren't deadly and as Elliot said, there's absolutely no evidence to suggest that this event can occur in the span of two years, however, our poles already shift, if you will.. They don't reverse, but they wander and we see no damaging affects from this.

Astrogeek or, Elliot may be able to explain what I'm talking about.

The only people who say they are certain are the proponents of 2012, not scientists. We show how they cannot be certain based on the all important pieces of evidence we have at hand - that is to say, the evidence we have does not agree with the proponents claims.

For example, pole reversals are known to happen and expected to happen in the future, but no amount of evidence that has ever been found has pointed to it occurring in the span of two years - even in an average human lifetime you'll have a challenge waiting for something to happen, and even then, in the case of Geomagnetic reversal, you wouldn't know much about it anyway, besides compasses pointing in another direction.

With objects in space, we are finding new things all the time and as soon as possible we work out what their future is in relation to ours, and once again, nothing has been found with a certainty of slamming into us in 2012, of any size and shape that proponents want to mention.

The LHC has gone through multiple checks and tests - it wouldn't have been built had it not be shown to work, but it is only one of many particle accelerators around the world: the second highest energy particle accelerator ever built (the LHC has since become the highest) is the Tevatron, located in the middle of America. That's caused no panic, it seems hardly anyone has heard about it, but the principles of it and the LHC are the same, the LHC just happens to be bigger and better.

In other words, we do not say with certainty that nothing will happen (Earthquakes, for example, are pretty much guaranteed to happen because the Earth is still a geologically active planet), but we do say with certainty that the evidence does not agree with the likes of Geryl and Rand, and that what they say is so far removed from science that it's the claims are usually impossible in the first place.

Hopefully that's cleared it up a bit.

If pole reversals can't be predicted, how are you so certain that it won't happen in 2012? How can you be so certain there isn't something in space that will slam into us? Are we sure the LHC can't harm us?

I've spent atleast the last 2 weeks looking over the 2012 stuff. I didn't even know about it until I saw it advertised on the History Channel. I've read several responses on Yahoo answers, which is how I found this site. I've read David Morrison's apge. I've read links from Discovery.com…..I'm scared of this stuff. I mean, how are scientists SO certain that nothing will happen? People like Patrick Geryl and Jason Randm scare me with their ideas. They seem so certain about it.
