No. The black hole in the Milky Way cannot destroy the earth. I don't know what the bubbles are yet, and I'm not sure the scientists do either, but they could be a relic of earlier activity at the galactic core.

It is thought that the black hole may go through cycles, where infalling material is consumed, and the radiation pressure generated by that activity pushes the infalling material back.

At any rate, there is a lot of material between us and the black hole, and if it does become active, that activity will be concentrated into jets along its axis. We are about as far away from the axis of the black hole as we can be.

The Gamma Ray bubbles would have been produced billions of years ago, nothing to worry about there :) could are super massive black hole distory us? nope :) so we are all safe :D

I freaked out with the Earthquakes as the begining of the year so i went and learned about them hehe, Volcanos are awesome things :) especially when you get the volcanic lightning :)

There is alot of scary stuff out there but it's all good :D just because it sounds scary don't mean to say it's gonna wipe us out ;) I think it's the word black hole that scares people, and supernovas :O awesome things they are ;)

Everyone here has been so nice. My main concern was something coming out of left field and it taking us out. Those bubbles scared the crap out of me….then NASA finds a blackhole…then I read something about a supernova. it's just never ending. Every earthquake or volcano eruption, I freak out. I'm a basket case. LOL

Well, the galaxy rotates around the supermassive black hole, so in that sense I suppose it can be considered "stationary" with relationship to the galaxy as a whole.

Stellar mass black holes move around just like stars. After all, they come from stars. All of that momentum just doesn't disappear.

yeah finding them was a very big surprise :) not a bad one though, they do find new and exciting things all the time :) yes some of them make you jumpy and a even a little bit scared but nothing will harm us though :)

It's not the case as it's a small black hole…..It's newly formed so it will infact grow as it pulls more things in, as for it sucking us into it's gravatational pull won't happen of unless it changes course and heads straight for us……they are the boogey men of the universe :) you either love them or hate them :)

Uh, I don't think universal movement works that way. Wouldn't the black hole have moved by the time we are where it was?

If I'm correct on how this works, it's a basic impossibility for us to ever be om-nom-nom'd by a Black Hole because everything within this Galaxy is constantly moving. Unless I'm wrong, I don't think anything in our path is a static we have to magically dodge.

What I'm getting at is, after the course of traveling through 50 million light years, to the point where this little black hole is, we aren't suddenly going to fall into it. Wouldn't it have moved by then, too?

Happily correct me if I'm wrong about this, but I read somewhere that the only way for us to randomly get screwed by a black hole is for one to magically pop up in our solar system.

When i went to class today, someone handed me a print-out of a meeting Nasa was having about something that was found in our galaxy. I looked it up, concerned that it was something of danger to us. Is there any danger tro us from what was found?
