It's not that they cause me any fear (they don't), it's because of how they are scaring young people. I can't say this often enough.

They should educate these young people, not stop making apocalyptic films.

I have always been scared, used to make myself go to sleep as a kid just till it was over, then my dad would say "it's ok huni it's just God playing bowls" LOL never helped to be honest, but suppose looking back now I can smile about it hehe :)

I grew up in north central Mississippi and lived there all my life, up until last July when I moved to the Mississippi coast, so I'm well acquainted with severe weather. Never had a tornado directly affect me, thankfully. I used to have a phobia of severe weather, but I've grown out of that. Now it's hurricanes I have to keep an eye on. Luckily there are warnings placed well in advance of those.

I used to love War of the Worlds, but.. I just can't right now. Maybe after 2012 is over and done with I can watch it with ease again, haha. The Day After Tomorrow I liked and can still watch, however. I guess because I find it so unrealistic? I grew up terrified of storms and watched The Weather Channel religiously, so yeah. xD;

Things did get better. I eventually learned to ignore him and he stopped. :)

I have always been scared of thunder even now it reduces me to tears and I am 29 I also have a very big fear of the wind I hate it freaks me out so much when it howls. at the minute I am thinking about going to the doctors to get pills to slow my mind down abit I am not liking feeling so bad that I am scared about going outside, thing is I am not sure what has triggered me so badly :(

Oh well that can be a bit wonkie if it's something you don't want to know, personally I have been keeping away from everything that has been making me feel wonkie over the past few weeks, it's been one hell of a year already and it's only week 3 LOL.

Tomy, yeah, the last 3 paragraphs pretty much sum up the article as a projection..as in saying that we are 'overdue' kinda like how we are 'overdue' for a Yellowstone caldera eruption. I posted the link as a prime example of what it is that I fear, not because I absolutely believe it as true.

Bad weather has scared me since I was a kid, I'd have nightmares about powerful thunderstorms…giving me goosebumps just thinking about it!!!

I think weather anomalies will get worse but we will adapt to them just like we have done for billions of years.

And I actually also think that we can revert the global warming, by creating the technology to clean up the atmosphere and any pollution created by us. But in order to do this we need big investments in science and technology. Especially finding means to generate more power more efficiently and nanotechnology.

Now interestingly the global warming can also be a source for more power. Heat gets trapped more in Earth atmosphere so we have more power for windmills, for example.

I completely agree with you, I think people should spend more time trying to figure out the science behind things instead of believing wha most of the internet says, people over this year and next are gonna connect almost everything they can with 2012 and I think it's time people realised that if you do the research and take a little time to find the correct information you can steady yourself pretty fast and easy :)

Thanks for the breakdown, I do feel more optimistic about it. Like I said, I don't think (that if anything) we would see extreme affects in 2012 or because of 2012, but it definitely did have me a little concerned.

Lol, I actually enjoyed "The Day After Tomorrow," but not as a documentary (or reality-based) type film…and at least if that scenario DID happen, it wouldn't annihilate the entire human race all at once. It didn't scare me like 2012 did. And as far as 2012 the movie goes, I didn't even watch it for the first time until last summer!

Yeah Emm, I think the same thing..we will adapt to living with crazy weather like we have in the past. For me, living in New Orleans, I've had to run from hurricanes since I was a baby…so that part will be nothing new for me :((( I just worry about irreparable damage and if it's there, how bad is it? Just yesterday morning, I was watching "Ecopolis" episodes on the Science Channel and these scientists had some really innovative ideas for new technology to keep up with the 'green' theme. That made me feel pretty confident, too!!

You should not worry about the Global Warming, because:
1 - We have today the ecological consciousness that we didn't have many years ago
2 - We have today technology to stop it.
3 - The human being is resistent. Any change on the weather wouldn't be catastrophic to us, because we can adapt to the most extreme conditions.

Within some years, this will be a solved problem.
But instead of being worried, you should help. There are many solutions to braking the GW, that are simple, but very efficient. It's a real problem, and it's more severe than ever, but stop it is not as impossible.
As Alene Y said before, the GW is many times misunderstood by many people, that think it is a "warmer weather in all the world", but it's not like that. Actually, it's just a change, and it's not as fast as some people say although we can't just relax.

You also know that I have a big thing with the weather too, I think it's because it's so real you know what I mean? it effects us all, there are so many good websites out there that you can rack the weather and keep an eye on it. I think that my biggest fear (and I don't directly associate it with 2012 because I think it's too soon for it) is the weather / global warming scenario. We have seen some pretty strange weather lately; and I'm not associating it with anything specific, but it does kinda worry me (what can / does it all mean)? I am just hoping that since we have been on the 'green' bandwagon, we can help stop the warming / greenhouse gas emissions, etc. It's like, what are we going to have to look forward to if the warming continues? What's going to happen if the polar caps and glaciers keep melting away and disrupting the natural flow of currents and whatnot? How bad is the weather going to get, especially in terms of drought and conditions that could affect our food supplies?

I have tried to do some of my own research on the subject but I haven't gotten much clarity on things because some information says that global warming isn't the real 'issue' while other information says it is a 'dire' issue. And I have a hard time trying to decipher true from trash since I'm uneducated in the matter.

When I saw the satellite picture last week of the 49 states to have snow on the ground at one given time like it did, it kinda freaked me out. Florida was the only state to not have snow on the ground and it struck a cord within me that didn't set too well. I really don't think that we will see any problems from this in 2012, but I am fearful about the possibility of massive weather anomalies in the future. Just like the song, "Another Way to Die" by Disturbed.

I love NASA what are USGS? and NOAA? I try and stay away from youtube as much as possible especially when trying to steady myself people doctor some crazy videos on there, as for facebook I have some friends that have worked at NASA so thats pretty good for my nerves, I am also a member of three astronomy groups they are so good when I am in the middle of a freakout :)

Stopping is one thing, avoiding is actually going to make your fear worse because something forbidden is far more attracting than something not forbidden.

I should do something else, look at the movie but with no sound. Or look at the movie and play a CD with some funny Donald duck voices. Maybe you could put up cartoon network through the speakers and watch the movie with the sound turned down.

The biggest influence on any scary movie is the scary sound.

I follow alot of things on facebook my mind tells me that it's not what you know its who you know hehe, I tend to get obsessions about things all the time and I will do research on it till I find out what I need to know even if i find myself freaking out in the process. does that make any sence at all?

I wouldn't say that was sad at all, it's real fear and yes you will get some people that do not understand this I find them really closed minded and they only live in their own little world, I am pleased your wife has this kinda outlook on things, my family more or less have the same, I have to say I do not know much about the Mayans calendar at all, apart from what I have read on here and see on the internet. I have watched more or less most things the History channel and well most of it goes over my head to be honest, I am one of these people who even when I am freaking out needs to have the science of the situation instead of just what people are saying. I think the worse thing anybody can do is search for themselves but then again I find myself doing exacually the same thing on many occasions.

I think it also has a lot to do with mind set aswell because once you have something in there it is really hard to get rid of and you will find yourself doing connections with stuff that happens in the world and things that are a little out of balance it's not a nice place to be but it is also one of the hardest things to explain to someone who is not scared at all.

As Alene Y said, you are doing the right thing, avoiding this kind of movie. You can watch them, but not taking it seriously, because are pure speculation about future and give some possibilities for a future end. However, there is just a tiny possibility that movies like "The day after Tomorrow" would become truth, because have many errors. In the Internet you find some of these errors. Not just the famous footage mistakes that happen in almost every film, but scientific mistakes too. For example: it is impossible that Earth temperature decrease would be so fast as the movie The Day after Tomorrow shows us.
But if you need some fun, perhaps this type of film would be nice.

The first time I heard about it, my wife tried to almost convince me that the Maya had predicted all of this stuff, and they have been correct in all of their predictions before about everything. So I turned to the internet (wrong decision) and searched things about the Maya and found loads of stuff. THAT fear, is what I feel everytime I hear about it. I come here for comfort, because I ought not to go searching myself : )

Oh and I found out my wife had heard it from the History channel "documentary" that our school had showed her history class about the Maya culture. She is the type who will believe anything anyone tells her, and doesn't care about scientific method. She also said "I don't really care though, I am not afraid to die, at least I would die with my family and I know where I am going afterwards." But I had too many goals set up for the future, and the thought of not achieving those goals was horrifying. I also was skeptical of religion, and knew if it existed that I would not be "saved" by the time 2012 would roll around. I find it wrong to force myself to believe out of fear.

So that kind of sums up what I feel whenever I hear 2012, see a combination of numbers with 2012, or even hear the popular term "Oh its not the end of the world!".

WOW I can see why your mind sometimes wonders must be horrible when you have freakouts, do you do reaseach and try to steady yourself? I know that movies can be so bad with the science aspect of things but I can see where you are coming from. are you getting better now?

I have to say I loved War of the Worlds I have it on DVD and CD :) I have also seen 2012 it was an ok movie but i prefered The day after Tomorrow.

But, basically, when I hear people talk about the end of the world.. I generally picture what movies portray, because that's the worst I've seen, since in my real life I've never witnessed a person die or be killed. The movie 2012? War of the Worlds? If aliens aren't involved and zapping everyone, I just imagine absolute chaos. People going crazy and killing others, big tidal waves, hurricanes, tornadoes, the earth just splitting open and people falling into these seemingly never-ending cracks in the land, etc. etc. Or something like I Am Legend. Some virus getting out of control and killing off most of the population.

I used to fear asteroids, and unfortunately I grew up with an older brother who always liked to terrify me by lying about aliens invading.

Thats why I posted the questions that I did :) I want to know what people think I mean 2012 is a big thing around the world and people are scared but do they actually know what they are scared of? its a question I have asked myself many times though my own experiences.

I will take a look at that website sounds good :) thank you I just want think sometimes people are looking for things that are not even there if that makes sense? I have to admit that I have always been scared of the asteroid thing but this has been since I was a kid I was always looking in the papers to see what they were saying a terrible habit I still have. I think there is nothing wrong with anybody that believes in the Bible but they need to know what is real and what is not a few days ago I found myself looking in the book of revelations why? because I thought it would make me see why people where jumpy about so many things, it didn't do much I have to say but I looked anyways :)
As things stand I like to think I bring a little light relief to things I have a good knack of making people smile and have a calming effect on them sometimes I don't think of it as a blessing but more or a curse *blushes*

I am hoping in time maybe people that are scared will post here and tell us what they think is going to happen, when i was scared of the LHC and micro black holes I was scared of there being nothing it was just blackness scary thought that is :)

My point is what does people expect to happen if it did ever happen
I mean the earth has been around for a long time and it seesm to be doing just fine, I think the thing is we do not know anything about our nice little cosy planet so if things go a little wonkie from time to time we think omg nooooooo it's the end when there is no scientific basis for this at all, some say earthquakes are on the increase? are they really? no they ain't they are just reported more, or omg birds and things are dying it's a sign from God that we are gonna die how? because I don't see any connection.

The only 'true' end of the world scenario for /our/ generation is probably some entirely random, global nuclear war. Anything else, like deadly global warming, is beyond our years. Near, but still beyond.

I do have a /bit/ more faith in humanity than what is needed for a global nuclear war, so I'm pretty much in your boat of "Not happening in our lifetimes".

OK so we know 2012 is NOT going to happen but there are people here that have has worries about it, what I want to know if what do you think will happen when you hear omg it's the end of the world? do you think the planet is just gonna dissapear? do you think that it's just gonna be us that is killed off? what makes you think that there is signs that it is the end? why do people believe what fearmonger websites put on them? why do people think NASA is hiding something? lots of questions really and just want to know what some of you think.

Personally I think nothing is going to happen, I don't believe in the Bible and I don't go to church if anything I am a practicing Pagan but even that is slow these days as I am more interested in physics and science.
