There are actually things a homeowner can do to retrofit their houses. One of the simplest is to install plywood shear walls to the interior foundation. Another is to make sure that older houses are bolted to the foundation (houses built before a certain date were not required to be bolted down, now all new construction carries that requirement).

There's also a whole line of stiffeners/reinforcements from companies like Simpson (their 'Strong-Tie' brand, which is also sold in hurricane and tornado country).

You know buildings would have to be built to withstand quakes from the ground up, right? You can't exactly retrofit those that don't have some form of support, and with the history and knowledge of a certain San Andreas Fault line beneath their feet, I'm pretty sure what's worth protecting has been protected (and by that I mean 'this really big building that could fall, kill and injure thousands of people, gonna strengthen that. Your house, eh, no biggy…')

Yes… I agree that many things are being done to prevent a major disaster. I know they are prepared (or almost prepared) for the next earthquake, but my opinion is that they must hurry. :-)

Yeah, I believed the 18 years claim until I looked it up on the fourmilab perigee calendar. I never believed the part about it causing disasters. I just didn't see why they would lie about how long it's been when that can be so easily checked. I guess they figure people will believe whatever they say. Of course, in many cases, that's true.

The statement "Very soon, the government will prepare the population for the worst" is the sort of thing you would expect on a doomsday website. Coming from a so-called 'debunker' on this website, it's the sort of remark we could well do without.

If I were the government, I'd start to prepare buildings and the population right now, not wait for the earthquake and after that, be blamed for the disaster. And, right now, San Francisco is not prepared for any earthquake. They should do like they did in Japan, prepare the buildings using the best technology. :-)

We went to a bar tonight and were hanging out. On the way to the bar, the moon was orange and appeared pretty big as it was rising, but by the time we got to the bar it actually appeared smaller than I would have though. I have seen the moon bigger before. Regardless I had a laugh at some people talking about it, they were taking pictures of the it and were like "it is brighter than usual". I just laughed a bit, but then they said "It is closer than it has ever been, did you know that?". I wanted so bad to yell out "WRONG!".

Well, I did get to see it after all. The overcast has thinned out. It did seem a little brighter than usual, but that's probably because I was looking for it to at least appear slightly larger.

Since the Pacific Plate is moving steadily northwestward and being subducted beneath the North American Plate just 6 miles off the coast of Japan, earthquakes happen there all the time. Therefore, it wasn't unexpected. We can't predict earthquakes at a specific time, but we can say, for example there is X% chance of an earthquake at a certain location within the next 30 years. Since Japan has them regularly, they expect to have them. The severity of it wasn't expected, but was only the fifth strongest recorded since 1900. We didn't have the ability to record them until 1899.

I should note that, although it sounds strange that Japan is on the North American Plate, with the Pacific Plate in between, that is actually true. The North American Plate continues westward from Alaska to include part of Siberia and Japan.

If claims are going to be given a fuzzy period of within a week or sometime this month, then I'm going to place a safe bet and say that Earthquakes will occur next week, there will be a thunderstorm, the Sun will have a solar flare… the list can go on and on, and it does so because I'm simply basing my predictions on two things - those events happen more often than you think, and I've introduced fuzziness to cover up the misses I'll have.

You too can have 'advanced knowledge' of plate movements, simply because plates always will move. They might crawl along at a snails pace, they might snap into action with disastrous results, but it's all in a days work for Earth.

There was alot of doomsaying with regards to March 15th. The big earthquake in Japan that happened in March is being used as proof of a pole shift(because the earth's axis changed a few inches).

I was hoping to hear something that backed up what my colleague said, in that the movement of plates in this region at this time was expected, and which would explain why these freaks had advanced knowledge based on natural plate shifts(not alien telepathy or whatever).

It's only expected insofar as every plate boundary will move at some point and to some degree. It's the same expectation as it raining in a rainforest, at some point it will rain. You've got a much better chance of predicting the date and time of rain than you ever have at predicting an Earthquake of course, which is why you don't hear seismologists predict anything with any definition, we just don't have the knowledge to do so.

I looked at the Moon last night and it didn't appear any larger than usual to me. I'm going to look again tonight, although I don't really expect it to appear noticeably larger. It seems that the only effect expected by astronomers is higher tides. I haven't noticed people panicking over this one, which is at least a real occurrence, even if massively overblown.

I know they have been saying it is the closest in 18 years, but it shows a "supermoon" that was 10 km closer than this one (356,567 km vs 356,577 km) on December 12, 2008 here:

Worst = earthquake. The people must be ready, like they were before the earthquake in Japan. The buildings will probably be improved with technology to protect them, if anything like that happens in California. That's not pessimism, just be prepared. Better safe than sorry.

People on the West Coast have been talking about the "big one" for a long time. It is so active there geologically that it is obvious that there will be a big Earthquake again there at some point. That is why there is research going into quake resistant structures and such. I believe the "ring of fire" stretches to the West Coast of America if I am not mistaken.

Hi Awesome,
There is no evidence to suggest that an earthquake in Japan could cause one in California. A geologist from the USGS was asked this question on CNN a few days ago. He said there is no reason to believe that it would. He also said that we can't predict earthquakes closer than to say there is X% chance of an earthquake in the next 30 years at a particular location.
As several of the others have said, there are many earthquakes in California every day. We wouldn't be able to relate any particular quake in California to one that happened on the other side of the Pacific.

California lies on the San Andreas fault, so it is prone to earthquakes. There are small earthquakes all the time. Someday, there might be a big one. No-one knows how big and no-one knows when. This has been known for a couple of centuries. As I said, there's nothing new in the article.

If I make a prediction such as "there will be an earthquake in California" I am 100% guaranteed to be correct, as we have hundreds of them per day.

If I say "There will be a big earthquake in California" then I can weasel around the word "Big". Is that anything above a 4.0? The more specific I get, the more likely I am to be wrong. When will my "big" quake hit? Today? Sometime in the next week? There was a 3.7 near Hawthorne, NV, and 3.7 is close to a 4.0, and Nevada is close to California… does that count? I bet I can talk people into believing that that is a "hit" on my prediction.

This is a prime example of what is called 'Observational Selection', or "Counting the hits, and ignoring the misses." It's a fallacy of logic that people use to sell stuff all of the time. Another fallacy is called (in latin) 'Post hoc, ergo propter hoc', which means roughly "Event B happened after event A, therefore A caused B." One way it could be used would be to claim "The earthquake in Japan caused an earthquake in Nevada, see? It happened after the Japan quake, so it was caused by it!".

The people proposing this link need to provide more than a sequence of events. They need to also provide a credible mechanism for the earthquake in Japan to cause the earthquake in California (or Nevada). They need to exclude other causes (such as the fact that California has a lot of earthquakes anyway, regardless of what happens in Japan). They need to provide data that supports their claim, and not just a single event, but rather a large data set showing that there is a correlation.

If they provide none of these things, then they don't have a leg to stand on.

Ok, I just read the article. While some scientists say that San Francisco area will suffer from another big earthquake like happened in the last century, I don't think the earthquake will happen soon or even if it will. Remember, they are not predictable. The next "big one" can happen tomorrow or 100 years from now (regarding San Andreas Fault). No one knows.
And don't waste your time trying to guess when the next earthquake in California will happen. Unless you have a time machine or a future seismograph, that is pure speculation. ;-)

The Polish article merely says that the west coast of the USA should be prepared for an earthquake in the future. So what else is new? It doesn't say there's any link between the Japan earthquake and what may happen sometime in the USA. It then goes on with the printed equivalent of Fox News, with a lot of 'what if' worst case speculation. It even rounds off by suggesting the possibility of an earthquake in New York in the next 100 years.
There's nothing to be seen here. Move right along. Next pointless scaremongering article please.

Since it's now the day when the Comet Elenin pole shift, as predicted by assorted crackpots, is due to take place, I thought I'd do a little calculation to find our just how negligible the comet's effect on Earth is.
I have assumed the comet to be a rocky body of diameter 10 km - a fairly typical figure. Taking the value for the Moon as 1, the relative tide raising force on the Earth of various objects according to their distances at 0h UT on 15th March 2011 is as follows:

It has nothing to do with a war.

The have built nuclear power stations near the sea in Japan.

The Nuclear power station did survive the Earth quake but the Tsunami was unexpected and did damage to the pumps to cool the reactor. So right now they are trying to cool them as much as possible to prevent a melt down. A melt down would mean that the core would crack through the reactor and the plutonium might get out in the open which is not very good. If it gets open in the air then the land where it comes down becomes radio active and it is not safe to live there for a very long time.
But they always build nuclear power-stations at places where the wind will take away the radioactivity, in this case the sea. of course if the wind blows in the wrong direction than this means bad news.

Even though news reports stories that the melt down occurred, so far no such meltdown actually happened. It may be but so far the news stories are hyping up the story to sell more papers. They basically don't know themselves.

There are two main types of comets, short-period and long-period. Short period comets have orbital periods ranging from a few years to a couple of hundred years. They have usually been tracked around the Sun on numerous visits and have had most of their frozen gases driven off by radiation and the solar wind, so they are not usually very bright.
Long period comets appear unexpectedly from a great distance and having made few (if any) visits to the inner solar system, they are usually brighter because they haven't had their store of frozen gas driven off by repeated visits close to the Sun.
Comet Elenin is a long period comet and its orbit suggests that it won't ever come back. On March 15th, it will be almost opposite to the Sun and this 'alignment' seems to have set the woo-woos off. It will be 195 million miles away and even at its closest in October it will be more than 21 million miles away and won't have the slightest effect on us.

Elenin seems to be a single pass only. It is being ejected out of our solar system.

Also the closest distance that it could theoretically come when it a bit further away from its orbit is minimal 4 million kilometres. The orbit is slightly tilted about 1.8 degree so it will pass over or orbit. It can never hit Earth.
But it is too ahead of its trajectory so it will cross earth orbit too far before earth Even gets there. I though 88 times the distance Earth-Moon.

One thing that will be cool is that you will have a lot of falling stars when earth crosses the trajectory. With a bit of luck the falling stars are beautiful. They are only a grain of sand but nice to see.

This is another one of those media stories which tries to make a big deal out of nothing in particular. The term Supermoon is an invention by an astrolger, not an astronomer. The Moon isn't going to magically appear much larger in the sky on a particular day. It is close to the Earth once a month. There is also a full moon once a month. Once a year, these dates roughly coincide. The minimum distance is not quite the same each year, it varies by a small amount. This year it's all of 15 km less than last year, on January 30th. Of course, we remember all the disasters on that date. Well, there was a magnitude 5.6 earthquake, but there are 3 or 4 of those a day on average. There was snow in Germany but this tends to happen every January.
This is a non-story and the Moon isn't going to cause anything to happen. It will appear 0.5% larger than it did last month and nobody will be able to tell the difference.

Ah yes, i was going to school in my bus and i hear the news on the radio i get freaked out an earthquake?! Tsunami?! I Thought it was caused by this comet but i read the news and studied a bit and what heppand in japan is normal you see plates touched eachother they move a bit every year and sometimes cause big earthquakes, and for all those who think the world sucks because bad things are going on are just wrong.

Tsunamis, Major earthquakes and crises heppand when i was a kid , thats what my dad said , my dads mom was always scared of world war. You see now that we have media and the internet things slip through the minds of people, u can write anything on the internet like OMG WERE GONNA DIE IN 5 SECONDS! And it would put people into panic because they belive everything that the internet or media say. Get a book!! Yes its an old way to look up info but still most decent! Now people are connecting this earthquake to alot of hoaxes lol , but what they dont understand is that what heppand is normal AND HEPPAND A LOT OF TIMES B4! Also people thought we would die in 2010 because of the chili earthquake and oil spill, what people should do is look back at what heppand before and than be like , woops another one.

Oh Bikenbeer i have some quastions regarding this extreme supermoon thats supposed to heppan during march 19 tell me what you know about it.

Nothing out of the ordinary is happening. These events have always happened routinely. People just didn't pay much attention to them. That school of fish dying wasn't a big deal, except for the fish. Japan is very seismically active and always has been. They have earthquake drills in the schools there because they have earthquakes frequently.
The March 15 stuff is just horse manure. Don't worry about every ridiculous new claim that pops up and every storm, earthquake, or wildlife dieoff that happens. You'll spend all your time worrying instead of enjoying your little guy while he is still little. They grow up so fast. The world is carrying on as it has done for billions of years and will continue to do for billions more.
