Yes, I strongly believe in afterlife. I don't believe in hell or an apocalyptical god. Thats just me however. I belive in an afterlife bascially ,because I've had things happen to me that no one has been able to explain to me. I don't do drugs, I'm healthy and although I do have a slight anxiety issue I take nothing other then my daily vitamins (if i remember). This is how I believe though I respect anyone who belives differnet then me. Cheers =]

I personally don't believe in an afterlife, to me it's just another example of humans thinking we are more important than we actually are. We live, and die like plants and animals. Do we expect an afterlife for plants and animals? No, of coarse not. We have the ability to realise we are alive, and we also are aware that one day we will die. Our brains can't accept that we will cease to exist, so the thought of an afterlife is very appealing to humans. It's a miserable outlook I suppose, but yeah that's my opinion on the afterlife.

Well, I am a Catholic. But I've been through a "fire and brimstone" Baptist Church from my dads side of the family and it sort of made me a bit skeptical about it really. I mean, the way the Church my dad went to said God influences every action in the world and if you get Baptized they made it seem like it was a free pass to Heaven. And every bad news (i.e. earthquakes) was a sign. It all seemed strange and way different from the Catholic church I originally went to.

But there is also that saying of a loving God and loves all His children. It doesn't make sense when someone that loves you suddenly backstabs and has loopholes so that just didn't seem like the God the Church my dad went to described. I personally believe in a God that loves his people and let us have free will. Yes, it may seem like a touchy subject here, but that is just what I think.

It's hard to discuss these sort of things over the internet really. Sites like YouTube seem to have people that attack religious people whenever it's brought up. This site is the most tolerable I think.

Well I don't have the god gene, so I fail to have any religion. And they did try to make me religious. LOL
But as an atheist I also love fantasy and SF a lot, and one of the religions that does sound very cool is what the Buddist thinks. The fact that you come back again and again until you get it right.

Personally, with all due respect, Rickard, but the subject of "afterlife" is moot, and quite pointless.

I, personally don't believe in an afterlife, I don't believe in Heaven, I don't believe in Hell, I don't believe in a God that punishes and rewards his creation.

However, at the end of the day, none of us will know for sure until we're dead.
So, when I die, I'll be sure to come back as a ghostly figure (if I can) and let everyone know that I went to Hell, because after last weekend, that's where I'll probably go.

I had an unexplainable experience today.
I lost my cell phone today. I used another cell phone to make a call to my lost cell phone, to hear the song and find it. Then someone answered the call, but the person didn't say anything. I turned off. Then I thought that my cellphone was in pants pocket. Suddenly, the phone rings. I answered and realized that the lost cell phone was calling me.
But nobody touched the cell phone.

No, I'm not being sarcastic. This happened.

Actually each religion has their own views of the afterlife. What believers have in that religion is that afterlife. When you come into a conflict, then you need to examine whether the particular religion is a good fit for you or not.

As a Roman Pagan, we believe that the dead as ancestors come back to advise us. They live with us and we honour them. Roman afterlife was a vague theory which was heavily influenced by the Greeks - consider Virgil's Aenid when Aenus visits the dead.

As you can see, it does differ.

Well, I don't believe in Heaven, Hell, or a supreme being, although I used to be a Christian. As to some sort of existence of consciousness after death, I can't think of any reasonable way that could be. However, I had an experience once that I can't explain.
I was 18 years old at the time and my husband had been killed in a car wreck. My 16 year old sister had come to stay with me for a few days. I kept feeling my husband's presence, imaginary or not, and I felt that he wanted to tell me something. I felt silly about it, so I hadn't told anyone. My sister and I had gone to bed and I was trying to stay awake because of this feeling, but I went to sleep. My sister suddenly jumped and said, "Who's there?" I asked what she was talking about. She said she had seen a sort of glow at the foot of the bed. Then it felt as if someone had moved up and bent over her, then moved to across to my side. After that, I no longer felt his presence. It seemed to me that he had somehow told me he was sorry for the way he had treated me, and then he had gone away.
I can't explain it. My sister was the one who experienced it and she hadn't known what I was thinking. Of course it could have been imagined. As I said, we were both teenagers at the time, and it proves nothing. Ironically enough, she is even more against the idea of "ghosts" or "spirits" than I am. Anyway, I've just filed it in my mind under unexplained or imaginary.

While trying to stay off the metaphysics soapbox, I'll say that is one of the core problems. Everything is "subjective" in that it must be experienced and analyzed, but when you exit the spectrum of things that we can inter-subjectively confirmed to some degree, you enter a new spectrum of alleged experiences that simply cannot be distinguished from imagination.

Insofar as I can determine, the term "afterlife" doesn't refer to anything real. To define it, one has to first define "life" in some way that extends beyond observable biological processes. Typically, this demands invoking a spirit or a soul, something that is of a so-called "immaterial" nature. At that point, I wonder whether this "immaterial" something is something or not? If it is something, then what is it? What is it made of? What role does it play in our physical existence, and what reason do I have for thinking it continues to exist when the body dies? The same concerns apply even to claims about a material afterlife, as in you are some form of energy that carries on and remain consciousness when biological activity ceases.

I've never received good answers to any of those questions, and I think that is because there are none, due to the broken metaphysics that such ideas stem from. But I said I would stay off that soapbox, so I'll stop now.

There was another guy (Erik) that recently posted a thread about the afterlife and blablabla. Okey if you believe in an afterlife. I don't. The nothingness indeed sounds hard to understand and think about an afterlife is easy for you. But that's something we will never know.
The religion, spiritism etc, always use this kind of philosophy to "debunk" scientific method, whereas it hasn't a "simpler explanation" for what happens after we die.
This and other questions like "how the universe was created?" or "can we travel through time?" are always in the mind of the scientists, but we'd never know the answer. I wish that soon we'll respond them, but I'm hopeless.

Maybe, just maybe, there is an afterlife. Why not?

What are your thoughts on this subject?

Personally I don't really know what to make of it. My mind can't really grasp the concept of just "nothingness", so my general conclussion is that there must be some sort of afterlife. The paradox here is that I'm a Christian, and quite familiar with the concept of Heaven, but now I've come across some less than uplifting (no pun intended=) litterature making me think that perhaps there might be a Hell in the equation to.

As a Christian I've been told that there is no Hell for the "wicked", just eternal death. But, according to Maurice Rawlings, author of Beyond death's door Hell is quite real. Anyone that has read any of his book? I think he has written a book called To hell and back too, although I haven't read it. I know that this is a subject that is impossible to to prove or disprove using scientiffic method, so in the end it all comes down to the subjective view of things. Having read his book (Lord knows why) I can't say that I'm any wiser on the subject, but my personal stand-point is still that eternal Hell makes no sense. I'm having a hard time seeing how eternal damnation would go hand-in-hand with a loving God. But that's just my stand-point.

I know that these religious discussions is better suited for other forums, but I just thought it would be interresting to hear some other (or similar) perspectives on this stuff=)
