I don't really know if the risk is different when buying from a local farmers' market than from the supermarket. Either way, just make sure it is cooked thoroughly.

As long as you cook it thoroughly, it's okay. Of course the idea of having something gross like that in the meat is disgusting even if it's dead.

LOL as an avid eater of pork (slow cooked BBQ is a staple for our family) I can say that that thing is pretty nasty… But I'm not giving up my riiiiibs! Trust me… If you tried Middle Tennessee smoked whole hog… You would take the same risk. LOL

Also… Are your chances of tapeworms less if you purchase your pork from local farmers/meat markets?

I've always heard that as well. I think it's because of bacteria that your body isn't accustomed to and so you have no immunity, rather than any probability of tapeworms.

I can't imagine why they would pass such a law. The Ascaris (roundworm) also gets encysted in pork and isn't killed if the pork isn't fully cooked.

Tapeworms can also do that if you ingest the eggs. If you ingest the larva, it just attches to the wall of your intestine and stays there.

Yeah my boyfriend was excited because Tennessee just passed a law that will legally let you order pork still pink in the middle at restaurants. Not sure why they have done it after reading all this!

I haven't heard of tapeworms occurring here but ascaris is a more common parasite in my place. Anyway, the horror of a tapeworm is, it will crawl Throughout your body. And it will land in certain organs like the liver or brain or eyes. So… well, I don't want those things in my brain. Oh and the thing that does these things? The pork tapeworm.

Your boyfriend is wrong about both things. Pork shouldn't be eaten when it's still pink in the middle. If it has parasites, they won't be killed.

The thing about bathing in warm milk to get rid of parasites is pure nonsense. A tapeworm in your intestines or encysted in your muscles is going to smell milk and crawl out your nose? Riiight.

I haven't heard anything about them being used for weight loss in the past. It sounds like a very bad idea. I had a kitten who died from tapeworms. She was treated for it, but it didn't work. She was just too weakened and didn't make it.

My bofriend also says the way to remove a parasite is to take a bath in warm milk. The parasite will smell it and crawl out your nose! Sounds like a horrific wives tale to me!

Is BBQ that is cooked low and slow (maybe 150 degrees for 24+ hours) bad? I eat BBQ several times a week. Also, my boyfriend says that eating pork still pink on the middle is fine and this is how he's always cooked it… Could this be bad? Egads!

I also heard parasites were used as a weight loss treatment back in the 1920's… How nasty!

No, they don't. I have never had a dog with tapeworms and I've had many dogs. Most dogs do get fleas from time to time, though. It's important to get them treated to get rid of the fleas because they can carry tapeworm eggs.

Your tap water is very unlikely to be contaminated with tapeworm eggs. After you play with your dog get your hands in the dirt, or go to the bathroom, you should be sure and wash your hands before you eat. Also, don't eat undercooked pork. If you do these things, you aren't likely to get tapeworms.

Well, if you eat undercooked food or drink contaminated water, you may get tapeworms. When the food or water gets contaminated by animal or human feces, it may get tapeworms. So if you eat it, you may also get the parasite. It's unlikely, because I guess your parents do wash food before eating it and do not drink contaminated water… right?

Yes, you can. You need to be sure and treat the dog for it and also get rid of the fleas which carry tapeworm eggs. Read my post above about precautions.

Tapeworms can be ingested by drinking contaminated water, eating pork that isn't fully cooked, not washing your hands after playing in areas where pets with fleas have been or after going to the bathroom. Tapeworms can be eliminated with treatment. Sometimes people aren't even aware that they have them.
Your pets should be treated if they have fleas. You should wash your hands after playing with them and after going to the bathroom. Also, don't eat pork that isn't fully cooked.
