The doom nuts like the 21st because it's got a real (but routine) astronomical event occurring, namely the solstice, so they can contrive some predictions around it such as galactic alignment.
Maybe the 23rd will rapidly gain favour over the 21st when nothing happens on that day, only to fall out of favour just as rapidly when we move on to the 24th, with still nothing happening. The doom nuts never seem to mention the 23rd. They seem to have placed all their chips on the number 21 and the croupier will rake them in and they'll be out of the game by the 22nd.

Which gave me this way of perceiving it as "if they can't choose a date, they're wrong." Even though I had trouble accepting that this time around, now it makes to me again.
