I suspect for a lot of hardcore Bible beaters from hardline sects will probably think this is the fulfillment of the Wormwood 'prophecy'.

It is not. It's just a comet, the interesting part for me is is it going to burn up in the sun, or make it past the sun, that's the only unknown. It fascinates me in so many ways, how a comet comes from so far away, which is not even a footstep in the scale of the universe.

I do not even think 'Wormwood' was a comet, and even if it was, it was one that could be viewed from the sky, made no contact with the Earth, and just happened to arrive at the same time as a lot of social upheaval, such as wars, famines etc, and was believed to have been sent from 'god', and that the comet caused those things, which it did not, people cause those things.

Whoever wrote about wormwood was writing about, in my opinion, a destructive human force, probably the Roman Empire or the Egyptian Pharaoh, and leaders such as Julius Caesar at the time. The fact it was called Wormwood suggests to me a very bitter, like the herb, human conflict and turmoil with the invading Romans. The clue is in the name, bitter like the Roman empire was towards the occupants of lands they wanted as their own, shining like a star represented the glory and might of the empire, I could go on and on but I won't bother.

Sadly yes, instead of it being a once in a lifetime event for lots of us, people will spoil it with this of course.

Its pathetic to say the least, and hopefully people are much wiser this time around, but yeah I get your point and heard all the hype last year about Elenin.

How does confusing a comet for an entire planet even begin to happen on the net?

We had exactly the same nonsense last year Jason, with Comet Elenin and that one wasn't even visible to the naked eye. They latched onto it because of the "ELE" in the name apparently.

How does confusing a comet for an entire planet even begin to happen on the net? At least 2012 carried with it the mysticism of the Mayan calendar, so rumors spawned from the obvious lack of knowledge surrounding that culture and many more like it. So how pray tell, can doom tards accomplish this feat. Hopefully the public won't fall for this crap again because it seems extremely silly if they are proposing comets in the night sky are make believe planets. At least science will quickly denounce these ridiculous claims, and hopefully won't leave room for speculation.

Yes, it's thought that Pan-STARRS will be bright as well, so if it does turn out that way, that's two Nibirus due in 2013 according to the cranks I guess …

I have vague recollections of seeing a very bright naked-eye comet from the street where I lived, in the 1950s when I was 7 or 8 years old. A lot of people were marvelling at it, as I remember. I just did a little research and seems it was probably either Arend-Roland or Mrkos.

http://www.astronomycafe.net/qadir/q869.html

With any luck, comet C/2011 L4 (PANSTARRS) might become a naked eye object in March 2013, so you might not have to wait until November to observe a comet.

It may not pose a danger to Earth. However, that does not mean there is not an alien armada hiding behind the comet that will invade earth and bring humanity to its knees!!!

That was sarcasm so please do not take it serious.

Is anyone else looking forward to observing comet ISON as it makes it's flyby later in 2013? This will be my first chance to hopefully observe a comet, as Hallie's Comet didn't really mean much to me when I was a kid. I hear ISON is going to be viewable in the Northern Hemisphere of Earth in late November 2013. Scientists don't quite know if it will burn up in the sun after passing Earth, or if it will zoom back out into space for another possible flyby at a later date. So far it is believed the comet has made it's journey to the solar system from the Oort Cloud.

Don't worry folks, the comet poses NO danger to the Earth, as normal, but will provide a great chance for astronomers and scientists to observe and get a better understanding of comets as a whole when it puts on a show later next year.
