**There was a galactic alignment of the solstice points with the galactic equator circa 1998-2001. This is one of several astrological configurations making up the astrology of 2012. Its obvious that almost no one understands this. If you really care to know, ask Raymond Mardyks, he's an expert galactic astrologer.
I defy anyone to define "the galactic equator" as anything except a human-imposed, artificial concept. It doesn't exist. Even the mathematical concept has problems, because the error in calculating the position of "the galactic equator", even if the galaxy were perfectly symmetrical, is several light years. In addition, the galactic disk is not perfectly symmetrical. It is warped by the presence and interaction of various satellite galaxies.
I've read some of Raymond Mardyks' work. It does not strike me as being any more authorative than any other flavor of astrologer.
The galactic coordinate system was defined by the International Astronomical Union in 1958. Like all mathematical planes, the galactic plane is infinitely thin and when projected on the celestial sphere it forms a great circle - a mathematical line on the celestial sphere and also infinitely narrow. Thus there is an implied precision to this line no matter how uncertain the physical measurements leading to its definition. I don't know what physical criteria were used in its determination, but the problem seems to me to be not unlike trying to draw a centreline through a cloud.
The line of solstices is the projection of the Earth's (moving) axis on to the plane of its orbit. This is also a mathematical line. If necessary, one could calculate the date and time of the passage of this line across the galactic equator down to the nearest hour if one wished. Such a calculation would be meaningless because there's no point to such precision and no real physical connection between the direction in which the Earth's axis happens to be pointing and the plane of the galaxy. In fact, the nearest estimate I have seen of the date of this crossing is May 1998.
The direction of the Earth's axis is only important on or near the Earth. Scaling up to the dimensions of the galaxy involves a scale factor of billions to one. It's about as relevant as claiming that there's some importance in the hour hand of my clock pointing towards the Eiffel Tower.
Doctor neil degrasse tyson and david morrison says it happens every year on december 21…
Yes, there is an alignment every year, but not an exact one. There's nothing different about what happens in 2012, compared with other years. The Sun is never precisely in line with the galactic centre. Even if it were, what would it mean?
Not a thing.
