I used to be a teacher and many times the discussion on my class turned to 21 December 2012. Many of my students were worried about an imending doom. I have tried explaining to them in scientific terms that nothing will happen, it's all just a media hype. I also refered them the the 5th of May 2000. Many people claimed that the world would end as the planets were all aligned and this would cause a massive gravitational pull affect on the earth sending everything into chaos. Needless to say nothing happebed. I'm really looking forward to opening my presents on Christmas day 2012.
Yes, the May 2000 nonsense was a particularly fine example of the art of stupid doomsday predictions. The book was '5/5/2000' by Richard Noone, in which we read that on May 5 in the year 2000, the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn would be aligned with the Earth and her Moon. According to the author, "on that day the ice at the South Pole will upset the Earth's axis — sending trillions of tons of ice and water sweeping over the surface of our planet. Not since the days of Noah has Humankind been faced with this ultimate catastrophe."
This book is still on sale at Amazon, priced at 1 cent.
It's a good book to have around….in case you run out of toilet paper.
Funny thing is I did seem to notice something on 5/5/2000…all through that day I felt….how to put this delicately….a heightened desire for intimate female companionship :-Hi David;
As a former teacher, can you tell us what more this site could be doing to help your colleagues still in the classroom deal with this?
I've considered a small PDF booklet that could be downloaded and printed out for the students. Would something like that be helpful?

Why did they say that may 5th 2000 would be the end of the world? I how ever remeber june 6th 2006. :P
2012 - The year of the jackpot.
There was a planetary alignment (just goes to show you how 'dangerous' all of these alignments are).
Alignments are dangerous. I nearly got in a traffic wreck looking at the one in 2000

everyone said the world would end june 6 2006 because the date is 6/6/06 or 666 aka satan thats why people say the worlds gonna end in 2666
I say if they end come we wont even know till it happen and i have to say this NOTHING anyone or anything we can do unless in the future we have a wasy to leave this plannet before it hppen who know. I realy dont think it will happen in my time unless man does it on its own. And global warming wont end the world …..
global warming is just the earth heating up before an ice age which takes about 2,000,000,000 billion years to start and we have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more resources to surrvive an ice age than the vikings did.
