There have been so many earthquakes in the last couple of months!! I am trying VERY hard not believe all the stuff I've seen on 2012, but now I can't help it. I have got 2 kids under the age of 2 and I am TERRIFIED they aren't going to be able to live their lives. I keep seeing where people are quoting the Bible…..I don't know what to believe any more!! This has affected me so bad I don't have an appetite and I can't sleep. With each new earthquake, my fear doubles!!!! Please help!!!
The answer is no. these earthquakes in Chile, Haiti, The US and elsewhere are all natural. The Earth is constantly in motion. Plate tectonics are to blame. The plates that the continents sit on are always shifting and colliding with each other. the earth is broke up into several of these tectonic plates these include:
* African Plate
* Antarctic Plate
* Indo-Australian Plate, sometimes subdivided into:
o Indian Plate
o Australian Plate
* Eurasian Plate
* North American Plate
* South American Plate
* Pacific Plate
this was sourced from wikipedia but you get the idea.
it has nothing to do with 2012 or doomsday, its just the earths natural movement. these doomsayers shouldn't use these tragedies such as Chile and Haiti to advance their cause or making money.
Hi Laura;
If you go by the news reports, you can certainly get the idea that the number and intensity of earthquakes are both increasing. However, 110 years of data accumulated by the U.S. Geological Survey tell a different story.
On our page about the Chile Earthquake we link to some of the resources at the U.S.G.S. that show that we are not experiencing an increase in the number or intensity of earthquakes. During an average year, we expect one "Great Quake" above 8.0, 17 "Major Quakes" between 7.0 and 7.9, 134 "Large Quakes" between 6.0 and 6.9, over 1300 "Moderate Quakes" between 5.0 and 5.9, and the numbers keep going up from there. The number and intensity of quakes will vary from year to year, but on average, these numbers are very stable, and do not show an upward trend. In fact, in the last 20 years there has actually been a slight downward trend in quakes above 7.0, but the geologists think that this is a statistical fluke.
Whenever there is a big quake, the news media hops on it and reports every single quake all the way down to small ones. I was listening to the network news a few days ago, and a 3 pointer in California made the news! We get literally a dozen of those per day!
So, the answer to your question is "no", but also your question is based on a bit of hysteria on the part of the news reporters.

I know that it may seem crazy to relate natural occurances with 2012, but the quakes just keep happening. There was another one, 4.4 magnitude, in California this morning and they are saying that it could lead to a larger one…..It just seems like things are starting to happen….I can't explain to you how terrified I am that on that day in 2012 we aren't going to be here anymore…..So many different natural disasters seems really weird.
Hi again, Laura;
Yes, believe me, I understand. I have four kids myself.
However, you have to understand something about the news media: They frequently don't understand what they report. Based on the last 110 years of USGS data, we expect 13,000 earthquakes between 4.0 and 4.9 every year, worldwide. Those are mostly concentrated in the active earthquake zones, so saying "worldwide" is a bit misleading. However, at 13,000 per year, that is over 35 quakes per day!
What happens is we get a 'cluster' of quakes, and the media starts watching the USGS website, and then reporting everything they see. A 'cluster' in this case occurs because earthquakes are not 'regular'… they don't happen on a schedule. So we get a couple of quakes occurring soon after another, and pretty soon people are convinced that they are related (e.g., Haiti and Chile). Then they run to the USGS website, and see all these 4-pointers all over the map (not realizing that there are on average 35 per day) and panic.
In fact, the USGS is no longer reporting quakes below 4.5 outside of the U.S., unless they receive reports that it caused damage… there's just too many of them.

"Large Earthquakes" and California go together. We're much better prepared here (due to strict building codes) than Haiti was. The Haiti quake was about the same size as the 1989 Loma Prieta quake near San Francisco. But we had less than 100 deaths, compared to thousands in Haiti. Some of that is due to the fact that the epicenter of the Haiti quake was right under an urban area, but most of that is due to the fact that Haiti's building codes are essentially non-existent. A 7 pointer in LA, or San Francisco or Tokyo is not going to kill hundreds of thousands of people… just because those areas are prone to quakes, and build accordingly. Even the great quake in Chile will likely cause less deaths than the Haiti quake, because that area is prone to very large earthquakes. The largest earthquake ever recorded (9.5) was about 60 miles away from the 8.8 Quake in Chile.

Dear Laura ,
Please , Do not be scared .
I am not a scientist , i am a father of 3 kids as well .
I would likw to highlight onething .
Media is sick .
what the hell they are reporting .
Earth experience 1 Mill quake per year ( USGS ) ,
No need to report every single quake if not significant .
In 1931 , approx. 4 Mill Chinese were killed in floods .
Can you imagine that.
if internet and CNN were available at that dates ,i believe a worldwide panic had been occured , and another doomsday prediction has arrised !
I think Discovery , 2012 Movie Make and 2012 Books writers should be sued for the panic they are promoting to gain some cash .
I believe this is unethical .
Once more , kindly do not be scared .
For millions of year , Earth has been fine and will pass 2012 safely .
Take care of your kids , and start thinking about the proper college for them .
Hi Mohamed
Great post and thank you for your support on this 2012 is nonsense you have it right on the money with what you have said.
Thanks for trying to make me feel better….I wish I could be as certain as you guys that nothing is going to happen. It has just really got me freaked out….Every discussion on the recent earthquakes and weather, there are people sayin gto get ready for 2012……
Hi. It's me again :)……Sorry to keep bothering you, but i felt like I needed a little more reassurance. How can you be so POSITIVE that there is nothing to fear in 2012? For every reason that it is a hoax, there is a reason somewhere else that says it is true. I feel so confused…I wish I could just blow it off and go on about my life, but I'm just so worried about my babies future…. Please help!!! Thanks guys!!!!
Hi Laura,
You don't need to apologize for your fears or for coming back to ask us when you get worried. The thing about the so-called reasons for the doomsday claims to be true is that they defy the laws of physics. There is not a single scrap of logical evidence that 2012 will be anything other than a normal year. Their fake planets and asteroids just aren't there! If such a body existed, the thousands of astronomers around the world could not possibly have missed seeing it. There is no planetary alignment in 2012 and if there were, the total effect would be to raise the tides by a fraction of a millimeter. The only galactic alignment is the apparent one that happens on the solstice every year. Crustal displacement can't happen. There is no place for it to go.
Have you taken a look at the people making the doomsday claims? They are a bunch of wackos without even a rudimentary understanding of science. There is not a single scientist buying into this garbage. Several of us are scientists. We aren't just saying it isn't true. We are backing it up with scientific fact. That's something the doomsayers can't do.
As for the earthquakes, there are hundreds of quakes every day. They aren't increasing. We have just had a cluster of fairly strong ones close together. It means nothing other than the world is doing what it has done for billions of years. The strongest earthquake ever measured was in 1960, a 9.5 on the Richter scale and guess where, Chile. Chile is situated over the subduction zone where the Nazca Plate is being subducted beneath the North American Plate. There will always be earthquakes there. That really is nothing to worry about unless you live in Chile. When I have to choose between what scientists say (and I am one) and what nutcases say, I'll go with the scientists. The world is still going to be here after 2012, along with most of us. I have children and grandchildren and I am not at all concerned. Well, not about the world ending in any of our lifetimes or theirs, or their grandchildren's for that matter. Don't worry, do some more reading on the things that have you concerned, but please, not on the crackpot websites.
hello, i am an 18 year old person and i did have your same problem (exept fear of kids it was fear of myself) i was so terrified of the thought of all of this happening, but you have to understand one thing..just like mohmad said about the huge flood that killed 4 million…technology is only getting better, and its not more earthquakes that are coming, its more that we are detecting as our equipment gets better…not sure if that makes a whole lotta sense but if you think of it that way its quite fascinating. if there was world wide news back durring the renissaunce when the "black death" came, so many people would be freaking out lke they are about the "so many earthquakes happening"…i mean we havent even really expeirienced a world wide disaster like the "black plague" ….so i mean its not really as bad as you think…and another thing..if you beleive in the bible, then you would know that the world wont end in 2012, god said that not even his angels could predict the day the earth would die..so i mean theres that…im not worried and you should be either..we will be fine (:
Earthquakes are a completely 100% normal event virtually everyday. You can download for free a map pf the world which shows in real time all the Earthquakes occurring on the Earth. There are dozens everyday!
In fact if you think about it California is now OVERDUE for a large Earthquake centering around the San Francisco area. It happens every 100 years or so. The last one moved the ground in some places by 12 feet!
Without a doubt if you are a teenager right now you will live to see the NEXT big earthquake in Northern California.
Clear Skies! and don't worry at all about the 2012 nonsense.
Was the earthquake today in California an aftershock from the 7.2 on Easter Sunday? How long can aftershocks go on?
I'm not at all an expert on this, but I can say with certainty that this wasn't an aftershock from the M7.2 that took place April 4th. For mainly two reasons:1.) The 4th April quake took place in Northern California (whereas this happened in the Southern California) and 2.) They seem to be far to far apart (both in time and location).
Finally, earthquakes are not anything uncommon in those parts of the US, not even big ones. Here's a link that gives a good overview on just how vast the amount of earthquakes in Cali really are: http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/recent/ci10736069_h.html
So, nothing to worry about here=)
Facts are stubborn things.

Was the earthquake today in California an aftershock from the 7.2 on Easter Sunday?
No. It was a separate fault, well to the northeast of the Easter Sunday quake (which I'm finding referenced as 6.9 in some places and 7.2 in others, but there you go)
If you want to see why we Californians don't get too tweaked about earthquakes then watch this:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsanim/
Today's quake is at the end of that sequence.
How long can aftershocks go on?
Depends on the size of the quake. There is no technical difference between a "quake in the same area" and an "aftershock". We tend to call smaller quakes that come before or after a larger one to be 'foreshocks' or 'aftershocks', simply because the occur in the same region and time-frame. However, the Easter Sunday quake was south of the border, in Baja Mexico. It was also (as I understand it) a different type of fault. Where the Easter quake moved Calexico about 2 1/2 feet to the south1, this one had very little surface movement.

I think the earth's crust is getting ready to crap out!!!!!!
There are earthquakes every single day worldwide and more than one in multitudes
its Sept 2010
2 years left before we are swimming in lava
Hello Valia,
There are earthquakes every single day worldwide
Grossly exaggerated. To the extent that this statement is true, it's also true of every other year. I have to run off to take care of someone in a hospital, but I'm sure other regulars here will provide details.
2 years left before we are swimming in lava
I strongly suspect that you don't believe this any more than I do.

Couldn't be much more accurate. The problem is that the vast majority of them are so small you wouldn't even think to count them. Which is where the likes of the USGS come in, who do all the counting for you.

Exactly. What Valia4 said is literally true, for the reason you state. What he/she seemed to be implying is that large earthquakes are occurring worldwide, every day (which is a gross exaggeration). I had to leave too urgently to say any more than I did. I knew someone else here would handle it.

In what way? You realize that the 'crust' is cooled mantle, right? What mechanism are you proposing that would cause the crust to 'crap out'? What does 'crap out' mean to you?
There are earthquakes every single day worldwide
This is true.
and more than one in multitudes
This doesn't make sense. I think you are trying to say that the earthquakes are coming in 'swarms', which is also true, to a certain extent. Earthquakes typically occur in well-defined areas called faults. When a fault is moving, there will be swarms of earthquakes. Large earthquakes are typically followed by many aftershocks.
What is under debate is whether a large quake in one part of the world can have enough of an effect somewhere else to trigger another quake. Most geologists doubt that this can occur. Some geologists seem to think that it can occur.
Regardless, there is no evidence that we are having more earthquakes, or larger earthquakes, or more large earthquakes now than at any time in history. See our Earthquakes page for details. In fact, there has been a slight drop in great (over 7.0) earthquakes in the last 20 years, but most geologists think that 20 years is too short a time span to analyze this in any statistically significant way.
its Sept 2010
Yes.
2 years left before we are swimming in lava
No. Your assertion has no evidence. You have not supported your premise.

No offense, Valia4, but you're an idiot.
Learn a little history, earthquakes around the world isn't something new.

Do we have anything that can withstand the heat of lava yet? If so i wanna go lava diving and look for pokemons.
