The only credible external threats to human civilization that I know of are outlined in the book "Death from the Skies" by Dr. Phil Plait. In the book he outlines plausible ways in which the Earth/Humanity can be destroyed, but reassures us, based on available scientific knowledge, that such scenarions have a very low probability of occuring.
