Interesting reversal of opinion there. Of whom are you speaking when you say "us"? Do you have a mouse in your pocket? I'm sure none of the 2012hoax group share your opinion.

Let's review: This site has no ads. This site is supported entirely by its members. We don't sell anything. We don't ask for donations. We don't have a 'PayPal' button. We publish our content under a very liberal "Creative Commons" license, so that it can be used by anyone, free of charge.

Let's go over to my personal (and sadly neglected) blog at http://astrogeek.us. Hm… there don't appear to be any ads there either.
The implication that this site, or that I personally am operating under some kind of profit motive is trivially disproved.
Now, I suppose you can somehow make the claim that I am "making a name for myself" by being on Astronomy.FM and/or the 365 Days of Astronomy podcast. I suppose that if I ever abandoned my career in IT I could list this experience on a resume, assuming that I applied for a job at a radio station. However, that would appear (to me, at least) to be a wildly irresponsible thing to do, considering that entry level careers in radio are few and far between, and don't pay nearly as well as my current career. It's true that 'big name' radio personalities make quite a bit of money, but in order to get to that point I'd probably have to put in a good 20 or 30 years.
So, no current profit motive, and no prospects for leveraging the Astronomy.FM broadcast into a long term career. Not looking so good for me as far as future cash flow.
Now, Raymond Mardyks, on the other hand, has written some books, and is (or at least was) selling his services as a 'galactic astrologer'. He claims to have "astronomical and mathematical proof that 12.21.2012 is correct"1 but he's a bit cagey about his sources, and when asked to support his claims, makes it very clear that he considers his sources 'proprietary', and expects to be compensated for the information.2
What, exactly, are you implying here, Ray? Are you trying to say that I am in some manner like you? I personally find that demeaning and insulting.

The page clearly states that the words are those of Pein and Hoopes. I'm not sure what you are complaining about (other than the fact that you don't like that we quote Pein and Hoopes about you).

I have a lot of problems with this site (the assumption that 2012 believers are going to be making literally millions of dollars off something only a very small fraction of the population believes or cares about, the redundant and self-important "they're scaring our children!!!!" arguments, et. al).

Galactic alignment with the "dark rift", a formation of clouds that obscures the visible light from the galactic center sounds like an invitation to work with the "dark" side of the force. The toilet is a good place to look, since most of this site comes straight from there. Science? Really now? Then why does this site not understand the simple astronomy of the true "galactic alignment"; the solstices aligning with the galactic equator circa 1998-2001. 2012 comes from the Maya calendar, which is based on astronomy, NONE of which is accurately represented on this site. WHAT happens astronomically in 2012 that marks the end of the Maya calendar? What is the astronomical basis of the Long-Count and the 13-baktuns from which 2012 is derived? These are good questions, AVOIDED by this site because it AVOIDS scientific facts. I know what astronomically the Calendar is based on, as it is documented in an authentic Maya codex now called the Dresden codex. Is this authentic source of the 2012 "prediction" presented here. NO ** WAY. THIS site is the HOAX. Show me you know "one" astronomical fact about the Maya calendar and then maybe we can have a conversation. Yes, Michio Kaku is a real scientist, but that is an old video where he was talking in reference to information that is now outdated. The next Solar maximum is now expected to occur in mid 2013. It is not expected to be any more energetic than usual. I might add that the solar maximum is maximum sunspot activity. Solar flares can occur at any time and cannot be predicted years ahead of time. They normally only affect electronics and communications. I'd have to go back and look, but I believe it was in 2003 when we had a major series of solar flares. Did you notice them?
This so-called Galactic Alignment is a fairly straightforward piece of geometry. The line of solstices is the Earth's axis projected on to the plane of the Earth's orbit (the ecliptic). This imaginary line completes a circle once every precessional period of 26,000 years. Twice every period, it passes through the plane of the galaxy. This last happened in 1998. The line of solstices is physically important only in the vicinity of the Earth. Whether it's pointing towards a star, galaxy or some other distant object is totally unimportant. It's rather like me claiming some signficance in the hour hand on my clock pointing towards the Statue of Liberty.
That's the simple astronomy of the so-called Galactic Alignment. It's not difficult to understand. If you dispute this definition, please explain. Or is it 'proprietary information?'
We had solar flars a few weeks ago as i seen some nice northern light called Aurora Borealis. We havent seen them in a few years but i would think in the next few years we will see more. Sure it can blow up are parts of a grid but its still nice to see.
