The question that should be asked is why would they hide it?.
Think about this for just a moment.. Even if NASA and government agencies were hiding detailed information about a pending threat to our existence, what exactly would be the point? Because people will panic? People will loot? People will kill or spark chaos? At what point does money (if the government and NASA already know that our species is doomed) matter?
Pretend for a moment that I'm a government official.
OK… I'm going to keep a doomsday a secret because I fear that you will kill someone else, or loot a liquor store. HOWEVER, we will all die in three days.
Does that make sense?
Doing that is kind of like pushing someone out in front of a bus and after they get hit, you say "Well, I had to save them from the falling brick!"
NASA aren't the only ones with "eyes in the skies", as others have already stated there are literally thousands of amateur astronomers and I just don't think that any government would be able to keep quiet thousands of amateur and even professional astronomers literally around the globe quiet, I just don't see that happening.
Perhaps if they killed them all one by one (conspiracy!), but even if they were to kill them one by one, 2012 would be here before they even killed all of them.
So really, it just sounds like more of the conspiracy theorist bullshit.
