I was thinking about it. The feedback we get from kids when the topic is brought up.

"I wonder if its even worth living, I may just kill myself because I don't want to live through the end of the Earth."

Believe me, I've thought it before.Makes me wonder though.

2012 may not be the end of the world, but a lot of people will lose their lives, because of fear, there will be mass suicide, think of the Heavens Gate incident. http://www.stelling.nl/simpos/heavgate.htm

These people had strong beliefs and it ended up with hem all dead.

I also want to bring up the case of Chaya Lal, who ended up commiting suicide over fear of the LHC.

Will 2012 be a self-fulfilling prophecy, with many people losing their lives to their own fears?

Its 4 days before Christmas, theres gonna be a lot of people who feel stupid because they didn't buy their family christmas presents, but how many people will be crying over family members who have given up their lives?

It isn't uncommon for someone to bring about their very own prophecies, sadly though many of these self-fulfilled prophecies are negative prophecies of either themselves or someone close to them.

No. I'm not talking about science fiction and brain-wave connections.

In some cases, if you are to believe that you're going to die at a certain time, you could in theory unconsciously cause your own demise, whether it's an accident or a DIY (Do It Yourself)
So really, I wouldn't be surprised if a handful of these people were to commit suicide or unwittingly lead themselves to their demise by whatever means of fulfilling the prophecy that they believe, however the end of times won't be for everyone, just for them and that's an unfortunate consequence that many of these doomsayers don't take into account.

Suicide is not uncommon in our species and many things can trigger a suicidal episode, so to repeat myself, I wouldn't be surprised.

The only thing that we can do is try to help as much as we can and hope that those effected by the doomsayers will not go down this path.

That isn't out of the question, as we can say with empirical certainty that some people react drastically to beliefs about doomsday. Outfits like the History Channel and people giving credence to terrible sources they find through Google don't help matters. All I know to do is keep referring people to sites like this one, and responding to claims and questions wherever I see them.
