Truly unpredictable but I;ve heard word of it floating around.

I know that there's no actual way to predict a war aside from observing your surroundings but I've heard word of WWIII drifting around. I, myself, have found this possible and possibly highly probable, as have many of my friends. I am young and can be called naive but I was curious if anyone else has heard this rumour and also how this is and is not possible. I would like to hear some opinions and some things that prove and disprove this "theory". I don't neccessarily believe this but I would forget about it for "just in case" reasons.

Hi Avalessa;

Being a bit older than you, I have been hearing rumors about the impending start of World War III ever since I was a kid in the 1960s. Personally I think we had a better chance of it back then than we do now. Read up on the "Cuban Missile Crisis".

World War 3 is very real and very unpredictable. The threat of a third world war will exist for as long as we humans dabble in our primitive ways with our weapons. Giving a politician a pen and paper and pointing to foreign land is similar to giving a monkey a fully automatic assault rifle with 2,000 rounds of ammunition. It isn't going to be pretty.

When it comes to wars, there's no point in trying to prove, or disprove the existing threat of another world war.
However when, where or how it will be triggered is anyone's guess and it can only be speculated until it actually happens.

It could happen tomorrow, a year from now, three years, maybe even 50 or 100 years from now. We simply don't know when the politicians are going to act out like mindless buffoons and start a war that will sweep across the globe.

AstroGeek is few years older than me, but I myself cannot remember a time from the 1980s to now that did not involve some speculation about widespread war or "World War 3" every time a new conflict arose. Not sure what exactly you want to hear, because you've offered no "theory" to prove or disprove, but simply asserted that you and some friends speculate that it is "possible and possibly highly probable." That isn't something I can effectively respond to, other than to affirm what has already been stated. Wars happen, and people always talk about wars happening, but I think anything even resembling World War 3 was far more likely at the peak of the Cold War and over the preceding decades than it is now.

UndeadxNurse sums things up pretty well above: "We simply don't know when the politicians are going to act out like mindless buffoons and start a war that will sweep across the globe." Really, that's the gist of it.

Not quite. That would mean I'm Methuselah. As for the possibility of a third world war, there is no theory. It's just speculation that has been floating around since the end of WWII. It can't be proven or disproven, but the speculation has gone on about it since 1945. As You said, Astro, it was much more likely in the sixties than it is now.

It's mostly insurgent groups like the Taliban we are fighting now. In the 40's we were island hopping and fighting Nazi's trying to conquer Europe. Now it's basically people doing hit and run attacks while hiding in caves. While it is a concern, as said above, there was a better chance of it back then than now. But personally, I think the Soviets were more of a threat than the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.
