The governments (because this is truly an international problem) have ramped up their study of the sun (we now have a fleet of satellites watching the sun) and this has enhanced our early warning capacity. The power grid operators are slowly hardening crucial pieces of equipment (i.e. the major step-down transformers) against the potential surges, and installing additional circuit breakers to help prevent power outages. The danger of extended power outages is probably the most critical large-scale danger of solar events. The second most critical is the communication satellites. The most modern of these are very well protected against solar events, simply because the satellite operators have learned that if they don't protect them, they can lose them.
We have come quite a long way in the last decade, but we have much more room for improvement.
Frankly though, I am more worried about the accumulation of space junk, and the potential for a cascade effect taking out satellites.
