So, my friend and her husband were at my house tonight and we started discussing the economy. She said that her aunt's boss man follows the economy and the stock and such. He advised ehr aunt to not take out anymore debt. He said that the economy was fixing to collapse, that everything was going to be lost as far as money in the bank, home loans, etc. She said "I just think we all need to start going to church and praying." My husband asked her why and she said "The world is fixing to end. This is the Bible fulfilling and we are all pretty much dead." I know I sound crazy for letting this bother me….but she is the same person who called to tell me about the 2012 Doomsday. My husband and I have decided it's time to expand out family and every little thing bothers me now…..Could all the banks go belly up and leave everyone penny-less and fighting for things they've paid for so long??
Laura
Welcome back and again and no offense but you've let some of your bible beating family scare you. God if he exsists is not going to come back on our terms he is however going to come back on his own terms. Answer me 1 question and take this back to your family for their next visit ask them if we are in the "Great Tribulation" yet or if any of the rest of the propsed signs that we are in the End Time well news flash the Economy Fail is not a sign of the End Time and if their talking corrupt government that government has always been somewhat corrupt over the years.
Laura, the best advice I can give you is to stop listening to your ultra-religious family members. They are clearly entrenched in a particular way of thinking that is neither rational nor rooted in reality.
Economies are not static entities. They shift constantly, and there have always been periods where economies have gone bad. It's only prudent to invest wisely and protect those investments as best you can. If we do hit a major bump in the road, as happened in the 1930s, I will recommend preparedness and sound investments over prayer any day. "Two hands doing are better than a thousand hands praying," or so the saying approximately goes. At least supplement your prayers with action toward your desired end. ;)
I think the last few years have shown us that banks can indeed fail, and if this ever happens on a large scale we might see another depression, and it's unlikely the band-aid of government bail-outs will "save" anyone. This is just the reality of life within human economies, especially economies on the scale we see today. Even if this happens, however, doom and gloom claims like "the world is fixing to end" and "we are all pretty much dead" are really, really ridiculous, and you should ignore them.
If you want to expand your family, I can think of no reason why you shouldn't.
If an economical collapse was the penultimate sign of Judgment Day, why are we still alive right now? I'm looking at you, Great Depression.
I strongly recommend doing some reading on the Great Depression, and seeing just 'how bad' that was. It will give you a good idea of what may happen again.
And now, from an atheist point of view… ahem. Our currency, ALL of the world's modern currency, did NOT exist in the age of the Bible's original writing. How can an economical collapse be associated with a biblical doomsday if it didn't exist then? And please, don't respond with some Bible Prophecy stuff. That's just nonsense.
God would have no concept or care for our economy or currencies. To state that if the U.S. economy were to collapse, God would kill us all… seriously, read that sentence with out smacking yourself in the face.
Honestly, the Christian/etcetc Concept of God is a total wanker. The 'man' has made us suffer through far worse than economical failure. I'm pretty sure he gets off to our suffering, you know? Why end it just because the USD crashes in value, again?
Hrm. Conundrum.
Whatever. The Bible says nothing about economical failure being the penultimate sign of Judgment Day, and if it did we'd all be dead already due to the Great Depression. Educate yourself on the Great Depression, and tell your friend she needs to pull her Bible out of her *** and stop taking it at face value. The original Bible was a book of morals and guidelines. Revelations is the only book that gets all Fire and Brimstone, and should definitely NOT be taken as a literal form of "o hai guyz u ded".
If you are legitimately concerned about economical failure, again, read up on the Great Depression, and make some stock of 'survival' goods to tide you through the era of crap. Educate yourself, don't let a Biblical Zealot get to you.
By the way, have some irony. If this is supposed to be about 'corruption' and 'falsehood', keep in mind Jesus was a renegade as well for going against the 'Government' he was living in, and was ultimately killed for that. He wasn't killed for being the Son of God, he was killed for being a rebel, igniting the flames of independence with a guiding hand, philosophy, and words.
This is if you believe Jesus was a normal man whom had a story written about his exploits, and less about being some crazy magical man.
Either way, Bible Zealots need a smack to the face.
Hi Laura,
I believe you in that you can feel something is happening to the economy that will mean lots of heartache and pain for you and your family. I too feel that way about the economy.
There was a thread here last week that addressed your concerns. I cant seem to find it now. It was titled Peak Oil and Economic Collapse. There was some very good discussion about this very point you bring up. I wonder if Astrogeek could link to the thread for you to read?
My advice is to plan like you would for a hurricane or tornado but understanding that it is a long term event and law and order may not be resumed as fast as people would like. Anyway there is a great deal of good advice and commentary on the thread i mentioned. Just cant seem to find it. Maybe I am looking for it in the wrong place, not sure so apologies if it is my fault.
The thread was nothing but a shouting match and was removed. It wouldn't be relevant to this topic.
Hi Elliot,
I thought there was lots of good information on the thread. Maybe if all the irrelevant arguing is removed it would be useful to people like Laura who are worried about the economy.
Twinklestar
As Elliiott says the thread turned in to a big argument between Moo and Dharma who iniated the thread and that's most of what inhabits the thread in question. Did it have useful information Sure but it was mostly 100 or so posts was argument between two posters and while there was information it's muddled in bits in between all the arguing.
158 posts, actually.

Maybe a summary of the fore and against position would be good then as it seems to come up regularly as a discussion point.
For: THE U.S. IS EVIL AND SHALL FALL! >:OOO
Against: … Dude, shut up and get a clue. If the U.S. goes down, every other nation is equally as screwed.
For: WTF? The U.S. is a bunch of evil pigs, it serves them right!
Against: … Are you even paying attention? Did you study the Great Depression? That was a world-wide incident. If one of the 'Power' countries crumbles, the rest WILL quickly follow suit.
For: GRAGH PEAK OIL USD WILL BE WORTHLESS HERE IS PROOF FROM PEOPLE!
Against: Okay, here is evidence against your claims.
For: HERE ARE MORE LINKS >:OOO
Against: And here are more against your links.
For: WTF STFU THE US IS DOOMED.
Against: Sigh.
Note: I am clearly biased, but really this is pretty close to what happened.
I have never ever said that the collapse of the USD will only effect people in the US, in fact I said it would effect all western economies which is actually happening anyway. PIIGS is the stand out at the moment.
So, do any of yall think we are going to enter another Great Depression? I know the banks going under doesn't mean the world will end…I just know that if everyone lost eveything, it would make the world a whole lot worse……Personally, I think everyone would be better off living like the Amish.
But how would we go through life without watching hours and hours of videos of kittens falling over, or whatever the Internet was made for?
