So, I looked up Gamma Ray bursts on wikipedia and it says that if one large enough hit us, it could cause a mass extinction. If these things emit Gamma Rays, then couldn't they potentially be a threat since they are so close to us in Milky Way? I'll post the wiki link below.

We are not close enough for it to have any impact on us it's 50,000 light years away. Please try and stay calm there really is nothing to worry about.

This is not a Gamma Ray burst.
A Gamma Ray burst is a laser-like gamma ray pointing in 2 directions focused by the magnetic fields by a collapsing star.
If Earth happens to be in the gamma ray beam then it gets in trouble.

This new discovery is not a beam like gamma ray but more equivalent like a big nuclear explosion seen from a safe distance of 100 km.

If it does indeed come from a black hole then it could be a gamma ray you can see this happening all over the universe, however even if it is it posses no threat to the earth and us as a human race at least in our time :)
