Sorry if this has been said before. I am just so desperate. I suffer from OCD and was just wandering what the connection between the end of the fifth world and the mayans is. People say that the end of the fifth world means the end of everything. I also read about Bolon Yokte (Mayan God) and it sounds like something bad is gonna happen when he "comes" down as he is the god of destruction and change. He is said to come down on dec 21 2012. Please Help!
Someone with more knowledge will come and explain it more. But I'm pretty sure that the fifth world is indeed an Aztec addition and not one of the original four with the Maya.
The fifth world was the Aztecs and not the Mayans. You have to remember the people saying about the Fifth World and the Mayas do not know what they are talking about. These people can not even tell the difference between the Aztec and Mayan calendars, and pronounce themselves experts. They are the same people who call up the Bureau of Indian Affairs at the U.S. Interior Dept to ask if anyone speaks "Indian".
As for the god of destruction, if you read the mythology, there is also re-creation as well. But the God is not supposed to come down on 2012 since there is no date attached to this. 2012 simply meant the beginning of the next age much like 2000 or 2001 was the beginning of the next millenium. Remember all the fuss about Y2K? Same thing, nothing happened.
The "god" returning to the Maya meant a priest would put on a costume, and people would celebrate or otherwise pay homage to this "deity."
It doesn't mean "the end of everything." On the whole, the Maya had almost nothing to say about 2012, let alone that the world will be changed or destroyed. Even if they did say something like that, why would you believe it? A lot of religions have doomsday stories. Incidentally, those stories and so-called prophecies currently have a failure rate of 100%.

The key word in your post is "People' say The Mayans and The Mayan Calendar say no such thing to happen on 12/21/12 it's the misinterpitations of supposed claimed Experts and people with no real knowledge of the Mayan Calendar. Not to mention recent evidence suggests tha the Mayan Calendar may not even end in 2012 at all.
Hi James,
If we were to believe that the world is to be destroyed at the end of this cycle, it follows that we would have to believe that it has been destroyed every 5125 years. Obviously, it hasn't.
There is absolutely no reason to believe in the Mayan gods. Every culture has or has had its god(s). Do you believe in Zeus, Odin, Thor, Apollo, or Hera? If not, why would you decide to believe in one of the Mayan gods? The ancient Maya also believed that the Earth was flat, supported at the corners by four trees on the back of a crocodile. We don't accept that, so why accept the existence of their gods?
The Maya considered the end of a cycle as a time for celebration, much the same as when we celebrate the end of our calendar cycle on New Year's Eve. They didn't predict that the world would be destroyed and, if they had, there would be no reason to believe it. There is nothing related to reality in any of the 2012 claims. You might want to read the Mayan Prediction page listed at the left side.
