Ok so apparently today North Korea fired about 50 missiles at South Korean island, now im not one to get into conspiracies like this but this actually happened it was on the news today, and did anyone hear it?? and also USA Said that they will stand by their allies so does that mean if North Korea nukes S.Korea will it be WW3????
Hey there Rory :)
Yeah I heard about it this morning, I think it's dangerous grounds to be honest he world is gonna have to decide carefully what hey want to do about this, personally I think we should all say clear and let hem get on with it themselves.
Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.

It won't happen like that. N. Korea doesn't really have allies anymore. During the cold war sure, the soviets and Chinese had a vested interest in them. Now, no way. The KPA just do not have the resources to do anything serious with S.Korea. I'm not going to say it's impossible, but it's unlikely.
Remember, about two years ago everyone was worried when Georgia went into South Ossetia and the Russians flexed their muscles back. It turned out to be mild.
i guess but a missile attack?? that never happened in georgia??
Hi Rory,
As Emperor Palpatine said, it was just artillery fire for about an hour at a South Korean island. South Korea had one of their exercises firing missiles into the ocean. North Korea didn't like it because they consider that area of the ocean to belong to them. They bombarded a south Korean island with artillery in retaliation. World wars don't start over small border skirmishes between two small countries.
WWI started over the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. WWII became a world war because Germany was invading much of Europe, then Japan got into the act. The US stayed out of it until Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and sank most of our Pacific fleet. These were big freaking deals, not minor border disputes.
How the attack was is irrelevant. Georgia involved 25,000 Russian troops and local separatist against the entire Georgian army. Thousands died. There is no reason YET to believe in anything more.
yes but im sorta young so can anyone tell me if something like this happened to start WW1 OR WW2??
Almost all wars start with the same thing. WWI started with an Assassination if I'm not mistaken. Anything could start them. But this scenario is not really a global danger. N. Korea does not control any important commodities like oil or grain, and they're not powerful enough to truly influence control over any.
When I read it, I read it was mainly just artillery shells that hit the water mainly and some parts of the city. But I could have missed something.
But really, North Koreas behavior is said by many to be "random" and this isn't the first time even before the Cheonan (spelling?) sinking. They have had some firefights many times in the past. Even at one point some NK soldiers going to SK's territory and shooting at civilians if I remember right. Even so, like said above, they have no backup anymore because China wanted to keep deals with the U.S. and Russia isn't Communist anymore.
Even if we did attack them, I doubt it would result in something like a global war. Sure, Kim Jong's supporters are fanatical for him, but the truth is, all he does is build up a military and focuses less on his people. He starves his people and they hardly have any power running through their cities. So, just as a scenario here, if we did go after them we would probably beat them quickly or by some chance they would see through Kim's lies and probably turn against him. But that is just how I think of it.
Even so, this is really more or less a border conflict compared to what was going on in the Cold War. And as Jason said, they don't really have an influence anywhere.
As for what started WWII, there was the Nazi's invading Poland, Italy becoming facsist, Nazi's attacking Stalingrad and the Japanese attacking Pearl Harbor. That is quite alot compared to what is happening today.
I know what you're thinking about though RoryFoster, but the reason, I think, people get concerned or worried is because it is probably new to them and haven't seen much history (not saying you haven't) and they jump to conclusions. In truth, the world is somewhat problem-solving now than it was back in the Cold War and WWII. My grandmother told me once that when JFK was assassinated she and her family feared the worst. But things turned out fine in the end. I also think media-hype is another reason people get so worried.
I hope this helped.
EDIT: By "fine" in my last statement I mean that it didn't cause a major conflict. Though it did raise tensions.
Everything is proceeding as I have forseen. Wait… when did that happen?
The idea that the United States was not in WWII until Pearl Harbor isn't quite an accurate way of putting it. It is true the US was not formally at war until then. But many things were going on, such as Lend Lease (supplying the British and Russians to fight the Germans) and stationing US aircraft to fight the Japanese in China. Additionally, the massive US military buildup began before Pearl Harbor. Heavy naval units, such as battleships, take years to build. The New Jersey (lead ship of the last class of US battleships) was ordered in 1939 and laid down in 1940. Pearl Harbor was not until Dec 7, 1941.
As for North Korea, whenever you have shooting involving a nuclear-armed state, it is serious. I suspect it is part of a larger ploy by the North Koreans to get attention, although they have been getting awfully risky in that regard with the recent sinking of a South Korean warship.
Hm? Where did I say they weren't involved? I was only stating on what started WWII. Though I could have said that the U.S. got involved afterwords to be clear.
They have some yes but I don't even think they are as capable as everyone elses. The last time they tried to test fire it barely went to Japan if I remember right. But yes, they have been barking a lot but biting less for years.
Everything is proceeding as I have forseen. Wait… when did that happen?
No worries. Just think of my comments as a clarification/extension then. I may have misunderstood what you said.
Technically, North and South Korea have been in war since the 1950s.
There never was a peace threaty, the war never ended, they just stopped shooting each other for a big period but they are still officially at war.
hmm i guess you guys are right but i hope u can understand it is tough for a 13 year old like myself to know about what happened in Cold War and stuff but what worried me was not the fact that they fired missiles but the fact that N.Korea have alot of Nuclear Weapons dont they
The Cold War was pretty nerve-racking. There were lots of tensions especially in the 60's. Though I think the 80's was becoming the "deciding factor" from what I was told. But then the Berlin Wall fell and that was when it ended. Of course, this is only a brief description. Lots of other things happend like JFK assassination and Cuban Missle Crisis. You will learn more about it in History class and find it interesting. Though I hope you get the right teacher… I got the one that always said everything negative and if you do get that type just ignore it.
I don't think they have "a lot" and even if they did I don't think they are even capable of going as far as the U.S. because when they test fired one it barely reached Japan. Even so, since we got troops stationed there and we are doing drills we have a way of knocking them out of the sky. But really, over the years NK has been alot of barking. Occasionaly they might bite but then it's not really a huge deal. It's basically like a dog in your back yard. It barks alot but when you try to take care of it it will either keep barking or attempt to jump on you. But then it will back off.
Everything is proceeding as I have forseen. Wait… when did that happen?
If memory serves, my history teacher once told the class that the attack on Pearl Harbor had two causes: One was to cripple the U.S. pacific fleet, while the secondary cause was to help Nazi Germany gain entry to U.S. soil, as well as the Japanese.
If world wars started over crap like this, we would have seen a third World War during Vietnam, and even the Cold War when Nuclear strikes were at the highest possibility.
Wie Sie säen, so sollst du ernten.
hmm again this happens apparently Kim Jong Il has said that N.Korea and S.Korea are on the brink of war and N.Korea has alot of Nuclear Weapons so i guess were heading towards a new world war or cold war perhaps?
Kim Jong Il is also in failing health, and his son I think it is would be the next successor who I doubt will have as much apparent insanity as Kim Jong Il has (ie, being thrust into the spotlight and your first act being nuclear war, bit of a dumb move really…)
That and there's the whole mutually assured destruction argument - if you launch a nuclear weapon at a major target, there's enough time to retaliate before that target is even hit, resulting in two destroyed cities for example, yours and theirs. Seeing as it's a good plan not to destroy your own city or your own people, it's therefore a good plan to not launch nuclear weapons in the first place, which is why you see shows of strength, rather than outright attacks ("hey look at us, we're testing nuclear weapons, wouldn't want to fire at us now, would you?").
While the events recently were less 'big talk' and more 'drop a few missiles to make sure', I doubt that even the North Koreans would attack with nuclear weapons first, and the South Koreans sure are smart enough to not do so either. It's an angry stalemate.
While I did study the Cold War long ago, I only remember the banging of shoes on tables, so I'm not really one for the history of warfare, or disputes and threats of war. Still, I don't expect anyone to bring the rest of the world into this, I'm sure there are others here who are following this closer than I am.
It seems that our current generation is slightly more tolerant than the generations in our history, where wars have been started over the dumbest of things.
To start a world war, I believe that it would take multiple missile attacks on multiple countries, but with all-due respect to North Korean military, their military just isn't sufficient enough to withstand a world war, but like any country, they could be the spark.
North Korea is smart enough to know that when it comes to nuclear weapons, they're heavily out-gunned by the Russians and Americans alone, Russia holds 16,800 Nuclear weapons, whereas America holds 9,600 Nuclear weapons. North Korea, the last time that I had track, only had a few, between Five and Eight, if memory serves.
If North Korea were to start a war such as this.. It would be suicide, not only for the people, but for the entire country, and even Kim Jong-il knows this.
Wie Sie säen, so sollst du ernten.
I don't think so Rory. The North Korean military has yet to prove that it has nuclear capabilities. A few years ago, they had failed attempts at developing the weapon.
I think Elliot and Nurse are right. Even if they for sure had the weapons, they wouldn't risk their destruction.
Because, like all dictators, they are afraid to lose their power.
Everything is proceeding as I have forseen. Wait… when did that happen?
