why would NASA spend all this money and effort into the study and possible deflection of APOPHIS?
apparently they will know more information in 2013
Not to mention that Apophis is an absolutely ideal event for learning more about what would and would not work against asteroids further into the future. It's not every lifetime you get to see something like this, and things learned about asteroids this time around could very well lead to mining asteroids for resources in the future.
It's not too far fetched unless you give up on the idea early on and ignore it completely.

Because it is a cool event coming close enough to Earth so we can actually practice on it.
There is nothing to actually to do there but might be interesting to have a transmitter on it so we can track the orbit very precisely and learn more about it.

I think perhaps something got lost in the translation? Bryan was apparently pointing out that there are examples of the governments of the world planning well beyond 2012, so obviously this is an argument against the idea of a vast government conspiracy.

I've made the same observation about Apophis, but never used it. Part of the issue is that the 2012er/conspiracy addict can simply retort something along the line, "Well, they tell us that to distract us from the REAL threat." I don't have a response to that retort, as you have someone so wrapped up in their fantasy world it's becoming self consistent, other than to point out they still haven't shown the existence of a conspiracy.
You can also partially blame scumbags like Jesse Ventura and his stupid Conspiracy Theory show. People seem to believe that just because Jesse Ventura was the govenor of Minnesota he actually knows what the Government is doing behind the scenes when he really doesn't.

Since Earth was thought to be spherical at least as far back as ancient Greece, I'm not sure who "they" were. Since scientific inquiry of the time was still relegated largely to the machinations of natural philosophers, "they" probably had a somewhat different means of evaluating information than we do.

I doubt you can find a single historian, paleontologist or archaeologist who contends that ancient peoples didn't know what they were talking about. They were, however, ostensibly lacking much of the knowledge we have today. For a more recent example, it is now known to a near certainty that lightning bolts are not thrown by Zeus or Thor.

Again, I challenge you to find someone who makes this claim. I would prefer that the content of text books be absolutely, uncompromisingly true, but that simply isn't possible, especially in science when new discoveries constantly revise our understanding of the world. It's also very difficult to completely eliminate cultural bias. For example, historical facts and documents notwithstanding, the experience of learning about the American Revolution in the United States is somewhat different from the experience of learning about it in the U.K.

No, actually, to make a claim like that one merely has to regard the utter lack of evidence that Governor Ventura "knows what is going on behind the scenes". His opening sequence on his show alludes to secret knowledge in a rather cliché over-reach for credibility. Obviously the evidence of such secret knowledge is not forthcoming.

And don't forget those pesky Boy and Girl Scouts, and other organisations today that teach primitive skills like starting a fire with your hands or with a flint. As a former Asst. Scoutmaster, I taught 11 year old boys how to start fires, build lean tos, and other such skills. I really think they could go on to building small pyramids.
However, the pyramids took a lot of capital, labour, and materials to build. After they were built, Egypt went into decline. Pyramids were built in the Old Kingdom. There is a period of decline before the rise of the Middle Kingdom. And they did not build pyramids.

The last that I had track of Apophis, it was only big enough to destroy a small city, I believe, and even if it were to make impact with Earth, it could land in the desert or, in the ocean. Oddly enough, landing in the ocean would probably cause more damage overall than if it hit just one specific area on land.
