there was a global eruption on the sun today, what does that say about allthe things we know bout the sun, and is that bad for us here if there is a big global eruption?
and what are idiots like geryl gonna be saying now about that
Hi Bryan;
We're heading into a period of increased activity on the sun. It should peak sometime in 2013. At the same time we have more spacecraft than ever before watching the sun. So, when the sun does something… anything… it gets reported.
Let me be clear: The sun is not doing anything unusual. What is unusual is our current ability to watch it in high-definition and near real-time.
"Do you ever think about things you do think about?" - Henry Drummond to Matthew Harrison Brady in Inherit the Wind
Of course, there's always the chance the Sun is trying to kill us all. I mean, if the Moon tried to crash into us but had to be stop by sleeping guardians, why couldn't the Sun whip us around?
Wait, that was Majora's Mask…
Huh.
Oh well.
Anywho, I'm not concerned about this, personally. No reason to be.
there was a global eruption on the sun today
That's not a very good description, and it's unfortunate NASA chose that language in their press release. Basically, what they've found is that solar events like flares and coronal mass ejections can result from magnetic activity across the Sun as a whole, instead of being restricted to local areas where the phenomena occur.
Also, it didn't happen today or yesterday. The report was released on December 13, but the observation occurred on August 1.
what does that say about allthe things we know bout the sun
Nothing. It just says that solar flares, CMEs, etc. can be global (on the Sun) events, which actually makes a lot of sense. With STEREO, SOHO and SDO looking at the Sun 24/7, scientists now have the ability to make observations toward this end.
and is that bad for us here if there is a big global eruption?
No. Nothing about this discovery suggests that solar flares and coronal mass ejections are any bigger or more dangerous than before. It's simply an interesting discovery about how these events happen, and ultimately it might aid in prediction and make us even less vulnerable to electromagnetic storms.
Funny how Geryl is such an expert on the sun, yet he never mentions this discovery before hand. You would think that a global explosion on the sun would be appealing to a mind like Geryl's, all of full of catastrophes and whatnot. I wonder if the Egyptians/Mayans said anything about this.
back in September, he said he made the prediction for July 31st. He then made another prediction for the 27th of October. Too bad for him, that many other flares and CMEs occurred in between.
Well, and i've seen your posts on baut as well. I'm not sure where you got the information that there was any activity on October 26th…I've been trying to find it for awhile.
Try solarcycle 24.com.
I'll check there now as well. Yea, baut was someone helpful but they're more interested in making fun of the proponents sometimes then looking at the data.

Hey tony,
They were two class C flares, which aren't a big deal. In fact, aren't those considered small? They were earth bound though.
I think they are the smallest. Odd that there were 3 on the 18th of that month and he had nothing to say. Also I dont see anything about these being Earth directed.
I'll also note that the solar flux was anything but impressive for that day or around it.

Hey Tony,
Can you explain the Solar Flux a little more? I keep hearing the term, but I don't know much about it.
Also, here is the report for the 26th of October.

As you can see, nothing was Earth directed. Unless I am missing something there.
Just a really quick question here; according to spaceweather.com the magnetic fillaments of the sun errupted with uncommon frequency the last couple of weeks. Is this just a bad choice of words or is there actually something weird going on there? I mean, is that kind of activity more or less unheard of or just, as they say, uncommon? Anything to worry about? Sorry but i get anxious quite easy so things like this tend to freak me out.
I think you're right on target for "poor" choice of words. They say ""Earth was not in the line of fire." That sounds scary, but they go on to say that it would simply cause aurora.
Looking at solarcycle24.com. The sun doesn't seem to be doing anything unusual from what I can tell. Someone with more solar knowledge will chime in and explain it better though.

This is a graphical comparison of the last 3 solar cycles, and the start of this one. You'll notice how much lower activity it is so far. If you look closely, you will also find that the chances of reaching solar max by 2012 is very unlikely. Some solar physicists are now saying 2014.
Joe, the phrase "uncommon frequency," in context, seems to simply refer to how the Sun has been relatively quiet since the last solar minimum in 2008. This year, we've seen a steady up-swing in solar activity, which is perfectly normal. If anything, the Sun took longer than expected to get to this point, and it should get more and more active as we approach the projected solar maximum in 2013.
