Hey lakin,
Professor Aldana has showed that the end date of the LC might not be the 21st of December in 2012. Unfortunately, the article is somewhat smutty by using wording like "wrong doomsday prophecy." The Maya had no doomsday prophecy for the end of the Long Count.
If you search the pages. Professor Aldana commented here about it. Dr. Johan Normark did a great review of Aldana's work on his Archeology blog.
Smutty…it's downright obscene that the author(s) of this article gave the doomsayers some free press.

I've heard people say that "the Maya calendar could be off" by however many years, but as I understand Aldana, that statement is inaccurate. The thing that "may be off" is the generally accepted correlation between the Maya calendar and the Gregorian (which is the one we use).

"generally accepted" does not mean it is true.
But tell me whys did the Mayan calender not end on 21 Dec 2010? Yep a few days ago!
It is astronomically fare more interesting than the boring 2012 where nothing astronomically is happening.
More planets are aligned this period on 21 dec 2010.
We had a lunar eclipse right spot on the day the Sun passed the black hole and galactic equator on 21 dec 2010.
And a solar eclipse is coming!

The mayans didn't make any prediction for the end of the world… about the 13th baktun period end… yes, they can be wrong. Anyway, this doesn't worry me. Are you worried?
Yea I'm a little scared I'm due to graduate in 2013 so naturally I'm scared.
No one knows when the Mayan calender ends. The error is 500 years. It might already have happened 200 years ago.
We do not have the connection between their calender and ours. Some people guessed a date, but this guessing is not really that scientific.
I suspect they choose the 2012 date because that is one cool date when combined with 21 dec 2012 as a marketing stunt to sell more books. I would have chosen the date 21 dec 2112 because that number is even more cool, but it would mean that I would not be able to sell my books for another 100 years.
Just take out a program and look yourself how the planets align. Nothing special that day. 21 Dec 2010 was a more spectacular date from astronomical point of view.
Oh I know that anything Astronimical is not gonna happen in 2012 (other then things that happen every year or the metoer shower) that I'm not worryed about one bit. I LOVE ASTRONOMY!! There are no "prophecies," at least not in the context of ancient people warning us about anything. All of the 2012 doom tales are modern inventions, dreamed up by people who want to sell something and spread by people who don't know any better. Even if some ancient culture did say something about 2012 (which isn't the case), there's absolutely no reason to believe it and buy into doomsday hysteria.

Nothing you've mentioned qualifies. When people die, we call it "death." When many people die, we call it any number of things based on what precisely occurs. Don't shoe-horn your woo into reality with word games.

Not the doomsday. Like TheGreatJuju said, doomsday can be the final judgment, nuclear destruction or any day of judgment and sentence. But, if when you say "doomsday" you are referring to the end of the world for the dead person… yes, you could say that, thought.

You mean the stuff that suck out of their thumbs and pretend to be prophecies?
Don't worrie! The scientist can be wrong, but is 1000x unlikely than the 2012ers be right.
If Einstein, Isaac Newton or Aristoteles would be alive today, they would be trying to stop the fears, I think.
Tip: Newton said that the world would not end before 2060.
Another tip: is more likely you die by a car accident than a cosmic disaster (like asteroids. It's funny, isn't?)

If we can't know when we will die, how can anyone predict it for us? - I don't know who said this… but is pretty nice and can help you a lot. Science enough!
Yeah that makes me feel better. My cuz who like obesses over doomsday doesn't believe this one one bit. He says He did'nt even have to reasearch it to realize It was a hoax so I fell a lot better knowing that too. I hope i can put this behind me.

Everyone would feel better. It's nice have a astronomer or anything else in those situations. But critical sense is the most important thing. This is the first step. With a little research, you'll see that's all hoax. Poor people understand the gravity of the situation: people become depressed while they spread this 'joke'.
Instead of trying to stop fear between the family or friends, they spread more… and more. This situation is more common with newagers families.
I know It's rather sad. I mean this drove me nuts for the longest time once I found out about it. It got to the point I'm now in therapy. People just need to stop things like this. If you honestly believe were entering a new age more power to them, but they shouldn't be scaring people into believeing it. I don't understand why humans are so nasty with one another. Very sad thought indeed….
