Hello to all!

I live in Brazil and I am very glad to find this website since what I’ve seen around the web related to 2012 is pretty scaring.
But, I have to mentioned that I became a bit frustrated when I read the topic related to the Solar Flares.

The author of the topic says:

“The authors of the NCAR paper said that cycle 24 may be stronger than usual, and perhaps as strong as the 1956 solar max. Did we all die in 1956, or 1859 for that matter?”

So, I believe that nobody (even the stupid ones) is saying that the event itself will DIRECTLY kill the humanity, but as we are much more dependent of the technology than we were in 1956, we can experience very hard times if the solar flares come as predicted.

You would be suprised.
For example Patrick Geryl actually predict that the inner core will topple over, massive floods and the Earth spinning the other way by 2012.

Oh, I think some of the doomsday claimants are saying this. Never underestimate people's capability to embrace sheer stupidity.

No-one who matters (ie. astronomers) is predicting any unusual solar activity. Here NASA predict a lower level of maximum activity than at the last peak in 2001. We didn't all die in 2001 either. In fact, did anyone notice anything unusual at all? I didn't.

i dont think anyone mentioned in any discussion on solar flares that we had one of the strongest recorded solar flare (X-34 class i think). and nothing at all happened, just a few power outages in montreal for a couple of hours

Hi, Valdir. One Patrick Geryl really does hilariously claim that a gargantuan solar event in 2012 will magically flip over the earth's core and wipe us out. In addition, there's no shortage of 2012ers who maintain that we will be sent back to the Stone Age by geomagnetic storms (which some routinely and wrongly conflate with solar storms).

If the NCAR report precisely mirrored the state of affairs here in reality, maybe our society could be severely harmed by a Carrington-caliber solar event. As it stands, however, we have 1) a 24/7, 360° view of the Sun and the space between here and there, 2) scientists and relevant agencies that have been crusading for some time to get power providers up to par, 3) near real-time updates on solar weather, and 4) a fleet of satellites that is by and large hardened against solar radiation. Also, the data you mention has since been superseded by the May 2009 NOAA projection, which says, "…the next solar cycle will be below average in intensity, with a maximum sunspot number of 90."
