Yes, I've come across this before and I have a standard answer for it:
It's just another example of pseudo-religious bunk by people trying to interpret the bible to fit in with their own crackpot ideas. This time the perpetrator is Harold Camping. Here is his 'calculation':
"The number 5, Camping concluded, equals "atonement." Ten is "completeness." Seventeen means "heaven." Camping patiently explained how he reached his conclusion for May 21, 2011.
"Christ hung on the cross April 1, 33 A.D.," he began. "Now go to April 1 of 2011 A.D., and that's 1,978 years."
Camping then multiplied 1,978 by 365.2422 days - the number of days in each solar year, not to be confused with a calendar year.
Next, Camping noted that April 1 to May 21 encompasses 51 days. Add 51 to the sum of previous multiplication total, and it equals 722,500.
Camping realized that (5 x 10 x 17) x (5 x 10 x 17) = 722,500.
Or put into words: (Atonement x Completeness x Heaven), squared."
In other words, it's total numerological nonsense. Add, subtract and multiply various numbers until they give the result you want. Why not multiply 10 by 17 and then take the square of that and add 5? Where do the rules come from? Out of thin air, of course.
Camping claims that 21st May 2011 is the Rapture and 21st October 2011 is the end of the world. Since he also predicted the end of the world for 27th September 1994, 29th September 1994, 2nd October 1994 and 31st March 1995, perhaps he ought to call this the really, really, definite, I honestly mean it this time, end of the world.
1 Jan 2011 would be a cool date for the end of the world!

Most of it is taken from page 2 of the link given by the original poster. That link also mentions 6th September 1994 as one of Camping's predicted rapture/end-of-the-world dates. However, it doesn't appear in the dates I quote, which come from the abhota website.
I didn't see a Harold Camping page. I don't think he's right, but his claims have freked me out.

Camping also predicted that the world will end no later then 2008 guess we all already died.

There is no "RAPTURE".
I certainly can't agree with your "reasoning," but I do agree with that conclusion.
History doesn't suggest to me that doomsayers and so-called prophets of any flavor will hang up their respective hats anytime soon, unfortunately.

Scare or Scam i think either term works in Camping's case. Jesus ain't coming back on May 21st. Camping at this point i think that he probably wants to die and doesn't care who he takes and it's ironic really that he thinks he can get to Heaven after basically butchering the Bible as bad as he has.
This was reported in the Washington Post - December 30 in Metro section. Also, the people involved are *not* quiting their day jobs. But they feel sorry for the rest of us being left behind.

The Rapture is a fairy tail
This is a warning and a call that the secret rapture is a fairy tail and has deluded millions of Christians into a false notion of escapism.
First of all you have to understand that the WORD was given to Hebrew people, not a Jew or a Christian.
So in the world today there are three thoughts / mindsets: the Hebraic Thought, the Judaic Thought and the Christian Thought.
In western thought, the 'heart' is the seat of the emotions, and especially that of love. It is important to realize that in the Hebraic thought, the heart is the seat of the MIND, INTELLECT and WILL.
So western thinking is often misunderstand, so for example scriptural love is not an EMOTION, but an action of obedience.
So when we look at the first five books of the Bible, also called the Torah, we know the TORAH was written to Hebrew people, who spoke the Hebrew language and had a Hebraic culture.
The Torah does not say anything about the rapture, you may remark. Do i think the Torah literally says something about the rapture? NO
However, if you are familiar with the Torah as a prophetic document, you should not be surprised that many actually address this subject in some manner.
In order for this teaching to make sense, we must understand the PROPHETIC NATURE of the TORAH.
The Torah is a shadow of things to come, so for example Paul stated that the stories of the Torah were written for the BENEFIT of the generation upon whom the end of the ages had come! 1 Corinthians 10:1-13
So, there are thematic connections between the Torah and the Book of Revelation.

The Christian rapture theory says Jesus Christ will return suddenly at any moment and secretly take away the Christians leaving behind everyone else to wonder what happened to them.

And Parable Passage (LUKE 17:34-37) the disciples ask where will those who are taken, be taken to?
VERSE 37: a place of judgment/destruction, a place of carcasses and vultures.

You could really do this with ANY book with many vague-meaning words in it.

I wonder what hapens if Camping passes away before May 21st as i've been reading that he's terminally ill or has pancratic cancer so maybe he used to bible to predict his own death.
Although i hate to do it i find it perdinent to in this particular thread because it is about a false prophet and his teachings and that's quote a bible verse.

I think that verse not only describes Harold Camping but anyone else who believes in the May 21st stuff. Christ isn't coming back just because some idiot made up a mathmatical path or figured out his own way of interperting the Bible if it could happen that easily it would've happend already.
Camping along with many others also doesn't understand how the Rapture works. The Bible specifically says that God will meet up with people in the clouds after the Tribulation but the kind of Rapture that he is talking about is a Rapture where Jesus basically takes certain people away and lets the rest to suffer through 5 months of Hell on Earth.
Found that tonight. It doesn't really bother me though.

So AOL News has a big write up on this. He said in 94 he made a mistake in his numbers. The thought of this kinda freaks me out. But in the Bible it says no man knows the day nor hour and to beware false prophets. Why does he think he's been chosen if the Bible says not even the Son nor the angels know??

Camping was not given any Progressive Revelation he is a False Prophet and that's been proven. Also it should be noted that the 'Rapture" that Camping is hoping for is not Biblical his idea of Rapture is only him and his followers will go up and the rest of us will go through Judgment Day. When May 21st comes and nothing happens i really fear what will becomre of his group knowing what happened with Jonestwon or the Branch Davidions. Camping does claim Mathematical Error but that is not the only error he has made in coming up with this claim.

Camping and his followers appear to believe in a Secret Rapture which is in no way biblical it is actually a modern idea from John Nelson Darby back in the 1800's and basically they believe that they are the only true believers in God which is nothing new that's essentially what every religious cult since the beginning of time. Also Camping believes that the Tribulation began in 1988 which it clearly didn't.
Who predict the Jesus return are mostly protestants. They always try to understand Bible. But, the truth is: nobody can.
Camping is 89 years old and apparently has pancriatic cancer he probably doesn't have long left and doesn't care who he affects with this prediction. He's also sinned in the eyes of god by adding to the Bible so my guess is if God is really all knowing and all seeing he knows this and Camping won't be getting in to heaven.

Also Camping does not take in to account timezones because if he did he'd know that a worldwide May 21st is impossible because of a little thing called Time Zones. As Camping claims it will happen May 21st at Noon Jerusulum time which it would be early evening where i am and about 10pm on the West Coast on May 20th.

Camping wrongly thing that Jesus died "Christ hung on the cross April 1, 33 A.D.,". in fact, Jesus live 33 years but NOT was born in year 1 CE. Probably was born 3-5 year BC.
Camping has also denounced the exsistance of Jesus in his book The End of the Church Age and After by claiming that Jesus never really came to earth but instead he was Michael the Arch Angel.
The article linked shows the arrogance of these people. Jesus specifically tells us that No One Knows the Day or the Hour of Christ's coming not even him but the father only but yet these guys somehow know through Camping's Mathematics. Also Camping made this prediction again back in April 1996 and was wrong.

When May 21st comes and they aren't secretly Raptured which there is no Secret Rapture in the Bible what will they say then.

No..but you are. How come Family Radio has signed contracts that extend PAST 2011? Camping has been proven to be a false prophet. A lot of thngs have not happened that need to happen before Christ returns. For a reverend, you don't seem to know the VBible very well..

The Bible tells us specifically that No Man Knows the Day or the Hour that is Christ telling his desicples that before he went on the cross. Camping is not a prophet of God because No Prophet of God would deny the cross and Camping does. May 21st is not in the bible and nothing has been revealed to Camping or anyone that follows him.
