Do you guys think that most of these 2012 things built upon the movie 2012? That maybe if that movie never came out that there wouldn't be so much hype? Because it seems like there wasn't much about 2012 until that movie came out. Just wondering what you all thought.
The movie 2012 took most of its ideas from 2012 woo artists, so the material was out there beforehand. However, I think the popularity of the pseudo-science and falsehoods has been given a huge boost by the film, and I think some people have taken it as a documentary rather than the pile of crap it is.
I first came across the 2012 nonsense when I started to answer questions on Yahoo! Answers about 18 months before the movie came out. In researching answers, I soon came across many woo websites, so there was plenty going on before the movie's release.
Sony Pictures were obviously aware of this, so as part of their publicity they said "Google 2012" knowing that people would find a flood of pseudoscience, superstition and just plain lies. Probably a pretty astute move by them. Get a bunch of doomsday nuts to provide you with free publicity.
I think you're correct to say that if the movie had never come out, there wouldn't be so much hype. At the time of its release, the number of questions about 2012 on Yahoo! Answers leapt from about 30 a day to 100. It has fallen back since, but continues unceasingly, occasionally boosted by school holidays and ridiculous hysteria about dead birds (as at present).
Roland Emmerich, in my humble opinion, should be horsewhipped for promulgating the ridiculous, untrue notion of a 2012 doomsday disaster. Doubtless many people were scared by what really amounts to porn for disaster movie fans.
The worst of it was the commercials for the Institute for Human Continuity, the ones saying there was going to be a lottery for people to survive the coming 2012 doomsday. The first one I saw gave no indication whatsoever that it was a promo for a movie. Mr. Emmerich is no better than Geryl, Rand, Masters, or the other 2012 proponents.

No wonder NASA choose it as the worst science fiction movie of all times. It certainly deserves the title!
One's convictions should be proportional to one's evidence. - Sam Harris
Let's be kind. If the movie doesn't preach something that is not real and is idiot it would be better, like The Day After Tomorrow. They are disseminating something that is not true.
Shortly, they wasted a good movie.
Just to be clear here, Nasa states that they did not say this. It was one of those media things. I pulled the article off of Phil Plaits twitter feed, but I can't seem to find it again. It has Dan Yeomans stating that the article which quotes Nasa giving top 10 worst movies, was taken out of context or was never stated. He did say again that there is no evidence of anything happening in 2012.
It was SEE if I recall, and if they - a group of people from the science and entertainment industries who are striving for more accurate science in entertainment - say that your film is the worst film in a given category, you best take a bit of notice.
The article I read stated that there was a conference with scientists that were there for something to do with movies and television. They allowed the media to attend, which was apparently a mistake because they misquoted or cherry picked certain statements. Go figure.
Im makin a movie! Seriously i am its called What i will do in 2012 . sits and plays video games all day, blah boring right…
