So me and my brother had a long conversation lastnight when I was having a panic attack and were reading different things and examining different science aspects to 2012 claims and it seems pretty much all the claims are ruled out by science. And that is reassuring. In fact it has got me more interested in science as a plus side. :-D One thing I am wondering is the following link. http://hubpages.com/hub/Geomagnetic-Reversal-and-its-Effects According to this article we are already in the long process of a reversal and while it doesn't say much about 2012, in fact says this will keep happening long after 2012, it does talk about some side effects of the reversal. So are we in one or not? I'm confused. And if we are, then are we in danger as a result? It talks about radiation and other things from the sun needing to be stopped by the magnetosphere, but I've read places saying explaining that life wasn't wiped out during any of the previous reversals and saying that some effect of the sun might have given us a temporary shield. I can't remember exactly. Another thing I am confused on is according to this http://www.rochester.edu/news/show.php?id=3558 our magnetic field is a lot stronger than it was in the past. So if like according to the hub page the magnetic field is weak, then.. well I just don't get it, lol. Ya'll have been instrumental in my fight against anxiety/depression, and I thank you for that.
One thing I am wondering is the following link. http://hubpages.com/hub/Geomagnetic-Reversal-and-its-Effects According to this article we are already in the long process of a reversal
Not true. There's no way to determine that right now.
So are we in one or not?
Nobody knows. It really doesn't matter aside from being a scientific curiosity.
And if we are, then are we in danger as a result?
No.
It talks about radiation and other things from the sun needing to be stopped by the magnetosphere
True, the magnetosphere stops a lot of radiation, but so does the atmosphere. Also, there's no reason to think the Earth's field strength would drop to zero or even to dangerously low levels during a reversal. I suppose it could, but the fossil record doesn't suggest that this has ever been a problem.
…but I've read places saying explaining that life wasn't wiped out during any of the previous reversals
You probably read that here, and it's true. There's no evidence whatsoever that previous geomagnetic reversals have been harmful to life in any way.
Another thing I am confused on is according to this http://www.rochester.edu/news/show.php?id=3558 our magnetic field is a lot stronger than it was in the past.
That is correct. You can also look at this graph:
http://www.2012hoax.org/local--files/magnetic-pole-shift/Brunhes_geomagnetism_western_US.png
So if like according to the hub page the magnetic field is weak,
That article is loaded with bogus information. Ignore it. If you want to learn about geomagnetism, go to the USGS geomagnetism site.
Ya'll have been instrumental in my fight against anxiety/depression, and I thank you for that.
I'm glad you're looking into all these pseudo-scientific claims instead of believing them and freaking out. ;)
this article we are already in the long process of a reversal
Currently we don't know. It could be, it could be not, only long-term spread over many decades we might have a model.
Natural cycles always happen.
What we do know is that a pole reversal has no real effect on us. Except for compasses pointing to different directions.
Interesting is that when you dig in a bit deeper into magnetism is that the Earth has no North and South pole perfectly aligned up and some area's in the world we have deviations of the compass. So it is not a perfect magnetic field, it is a bit erratic. So I think that even birds do not have big issues with them; especially when birds fly cross power lines and big metallic buildings the magnetic field is also distorted and the birds don't seem to have notice it.
In regard to GPS, GPS do not use magnetic fields but the position of the satellites. Your GPS would still work.
The first link is wrong. He predict a magnetic reversal for 2012. There's no way to predict exactly, like TheGreatJuju said correctly. It's a long process, that will take some thousands or hundreds of years to be completed.
I agree with the second link. Our magnetic field is stronger than in the past.
Read the page "Magnetic Pole Shift" for understand better.
Peace!
Maybe.
Seriously, there is no way to really tell at this point. If we are in the beginning stages of a geomagnetic reversal, we probably won't see any significant effects for hundreds, or perhaps thousands of years.
"Do you ever think about things you do think about?" - Henry Drummond to Matthew Harrison Brady in Inherit the Wind
I was a nervous wreck yesterday, caught up in the numerology scare of the day, I had heard some big "tipping point" was supposed to happen yesterday and what not. So I heard of nothing big happening and then I hear about a baby being born at 1:11 and 11:11 on 1/11 and I was like odd… but upon further research I discovered this: "There are 133 million births each year, or 247 births every minute, or four babies born every second." So wtf, how is that significant? I'm guessing that is prime example of media reporting on superstitions. The only other thing I heard of, and that being from this site, is a comet last night, but that doesn't occur as some huge event or tipping point… does it? I'm sure they made a way to make it odd, but I don't see how it could be. After reading this site and other sites I see there is pretty much no scientific evidence for the claims being put out about 2012. What we are left with is conspiracies and predictions. (Which unfortunately, just like the numerology thing, have started freaking me out a bit, which I attribute to the fact that once I see fake science claims get debunked, my anxious mind latches on to the stuff like that.) What is odd about that is there are "psychics" on both sides of the field, some say bad, some say good. Are they seeing different futures? 0.o One prediction I read is some lady saying that we were gonna have a particularly harsh winter followed by increased natural calamities and then some big bad thing. So that freaked me out cause of all the cold and snow right now in the U.S. but then I thought…. other than this and a couple other times this winter it has been pretty mild otherwise, with temps goin up into 40's and what not, heck later this weekend they are going up to 50's. I mean there is bound to be a harsh winter someplace every year, so that is a pretty generalized prediction, correct? There has been plenty worse winters other places. That is really the only prediction that bothered me, simply cause of the "big bad thing". I mean are ya'll noticing any things changing for bad? I hope not, I really want to stop worrying about this stupid 2012 thing. I have tried to stay away from conspiracy sites like "godlikeproductions" because I get freaked out, but I feel like by not going to them I'm being kept from some kind of vital information.. even if that information turns to be BS, which according to ya'll it always does. Their disclaimer on the site is something like "Do not believe anything you read here." but unfortunately my brain doesn't interpret that. It does make me feel a bit better about the numerology part that the "big tipping point event" didn't happen yesterday, making me think it's BS. I also read about the Australian floods, and people saying its related somehow, but on the story it's said that they have had major flooding like this a long time ago.. Grr, constantly confused/freaked/anxious. Sorry for the wall of text, just venting.
Hello Anxious,
"There are 133 million births each year, or 247 births every minute, or four babies born every second." So wtf, how is that significant?
It's not.
I mean are ya'll noticing any things changing for bad? I hope not, I really want to stop worrying about this stupid 2012 thing.
Any things? Yes. Where I live, narcos are taking control of the countryside and some cities. People are foolishly deforesting the region, and using ill-advised agricultural practices that make their corn plots unusable within a few years. So they have to migrate to cities where there's too little water, etc.
But is any of the above related to "2012"? No reason to believe so. It's nothing new. And will it mean the Apocalyse? Forget it.
Please, Anxious, stop looking at this junk.

You know, to think that Patrick Geryl is the one who got me scared of the whole thing in the first place. And then I started reading and had a nervous break down. If it wasn't for this site, I would have no factual information to rely on.
Hello Axious,
As you said,
I have tried to stay away from conspiracy sites like "godlikeproductions" because I get freaked out, but I feel like by not going to them I'm being kept from some kind of vital information.. even if that information turns out to be BS, which according to ya'll it always does.
Think about what you said here: "I feel I'm being kept from some kind of vital information, even if it turns out to be BS".
How is it vital information, if it turns out to be BS? And in all your visits to those sites, have you found even one thing that wasn't BS, that wasn't explained better in sites like ours?
If it wasn't for this site, I would have no factual information to rely on.
The problem isn't the lack of factual information elsewhere; the problem is that you're looking for information in places that you know are full of incompetents, loons, and liars. One question to ask yourself is, "Just how many times will choose to put myself through this?"
"I was glad to be able to answer him promptly and with confidence. Without hesitation, I told him I didn't know." Mark Twain
So yea, I was over the birds, now I see a post about a lot happening around the world this past week. I was convinced it was nothing to worry about.. now I'm not so sure. I see the links that have been posted, it's just the number of birds all at once and the whole story of trauma that makes it weird, I know others have been attributed to poison and what not. I mean is it possible the birds are getting confused cause of the magnetic field? I mean either way I would hope it isn't related to 2012, just saying. See.. every time I calm my self down, I find something that reinstates my fear, lol.
I mean is it possible the birds are getting confused cause of the magnetic field?
I don't think so, because birds would also be confuse near power lines and as far as I can see. They actually like to sit on power lines.
Romanian birds seems to be drunk. They ate stuff that turned into alcohol in their stomachs.
A lot of bird dead are actually cause by botulism. Yes the same stuff botulism is also in the product called Botox ;-)
Hi Anxious,
Numerology is nonsense. You can take any date and add and subtract various numbers until you get the result you're looking for. When you have a preconceived notion, you choose the numbers to make it come out that way. Numerology means nothing and there is no "tipping point."
It's cold and snowing because it's winter. Some winters are milder than others. We have had snowfalls that were measured in feet, not inches. One of these was in about 1994-1995.
It's flooding in Australia because they are having heavy rains. I believe they said they had 6 inches of rain in an hour. I remember when we had 10 inches of rain in an hour where I lived in western Kansas. The town flooded. My older brothers took our boat and went down into town to rescue people. That was in 1957.
As you mentioned, babies are born every minute, so it is no surprise that one was born on that particular minute.
As long as psychics keep their "propecies" general enough, they will sometimes be right. It doesn't matter which side of the fence they are on. It means nothing.
You need to realize that all the things happening now have always happened. You are just hearing about them now because everything is being hyped by the media to take advantage of the fear engendered by the 2012 hoax.
Thank you for your reply. :-)
“In all matters of opinion, our adversaries are insane.” - Oscar Wilde
It sucks when I don't even have to read things to worry. I guess this whole hysteria is drilled into my anxious subconscious. All the scientific evidence against all the stuff they say tends to help me only for a few. It's pretty bad when I think "I'd rather be paralyzed in a wheel-chair than something like I'm worried about happening happen" or something of that sort. And truth be told, I would rather that. I have noticed a lot of people that think something is wrong, don't even believe in the whole 2012 thing, they just think something could happen whenever, and not necessarily catastrophic, just something big. It's still sad to think reading Patrick Geryl's stuff is what got me into this crap in the first place. I really hope nothing he says is plausible.

Hello anxxious does not match any existing user name,
I made this post for folks like you, and others who've had "something big could happen whenever" drilled into their subconscious minds. It might help.
"I was glad to be able to answer him promptly and with confidence. Without hesitation, I told him I didn't know." Mark Twain
I have noticed a lot of people that think something is wrong, don't even believe in the whole 2012 thing, they just think something could happen whenever, and not necessarily catastrophic, just something big.
That's meaningless. It's a generalized, nonspecific fear, just for the sheer sake of being afraid, and it could apply to any group of people at any time in history. As we've said over and over and over on this board, something could happen at any time. That doesn't mean anything in particular will happen.
It's still sad to think reading Patrick Geryl's stuff is what got me into this crap in the first place. I really hope nothing he says is plausible.
You don't have to hope. It's not. Fact.
It's still sad to think reading Patrick Geryl's stuff is what got me into this crap in the first place. I really hope nothing he says is plausible.
Nothing he says is plausible. Just pure fantasy and sadly, some people believe him.
I have noticed a lot of people that think something is wrong, don't even believe in the whole 2012 thing, they just think something could happen whenever, and not necessarily catastrophic, just something big.
This hoax got many forms: apocalyptic, conscious, spiritual etc… but what scares you and many other people is the idea that the world will be destroyed in 2012. Of course, it goes against logic and science, it's a hoax, but some will become sad and depressed, unfortunatelly. You should not believe in any of those possibilities.
Peace!
they just think something could happen whenever, and not necessarily catastrophic, just something big.
They might be right:
Something could happen, something big:
- You might win the big lottery.
- You might get your first child.
- You might get married.
- You might….
The biggest worldwide event that I am 100% sure of is that all 2012 proponents will be laughed at big time at 22 December 2012.
Reading back through the comments in the solar flare page I see stuff about a possible Carrington type event, oddly enough that doesn't really scare me because if you know how to survive without electricity, you should be fine. Now I see something else in another thread about some poisonous space cloud 0.o and more stuff a bout a pole shift, which still does worry me.
“In all matters of opinion, our adversaries are insane.” - Oscar Wilde
I have a feeling that you saw poleshaft claims.
Anyway, those claims are wrong because there is no poisonous clouds in space.
The claim about pole shift is wrong too, because pole shifts take thousands of years to happen. Our magnetic field is currently weakening, but isn't so fast.
Don't worry.
Hi Anxxious;
It is typical of these pseudo-scientist types to take something known (the decline of the magnetic field strength of the earth, or the drift of the magnetic poles), hype them up, make them scary, and then claim that they have some significance far beyond the reality.
In the case of the 'pole shift'… I have seriously been listening to people claim that the poles were going to 'shift' since the early 1980s. In one sense they are correct, because the magnetic poles are 'shifting' (i.e., moving) now. But in their sense of the word (that the magnetic field will drop to or near zero, and then re-establish itself in the opposite configuration) is pure bunk.
"Do you ever think about things you do think about?" - Henry Drummond to Matthew Harrison Brady in Inherit the Wind
How can you believe someone that already showed big time that he has no clue about and is basing his claims on shaky ground?
e.g: poleshaft believed Antarctica is moving because of the melting ice.
Antarctica can't move because of melting ice because the Ice is on top of rock. Unlike the North pole, Antarctica is a complete continent that moves with plate tectonics. He also confuses the fact that Antarctica was warmer with the fact that Antarctica is at the South pole. Antarctica was not located near the South pole when it was warmer. Plate tectonics moved it to the South pole where it is now.
e.g: He also claimed that carbon dating was used to determine that the last polar shift occurred 800,000 years ago. And carbon dating is wrong.
No scientist will claim that carbon dating is used to measure the last polar shift since Carbon dating has a maximum range of around 60,000 years.
Can't sleep.. :-| what else is new. Anyways, I have read and re-read Geryl's page on this site many times ( seeing as his stuff is what got me scared of 2012 in the first place ) and was reassured by it, now I am worrying about it again for some reason. I mean is there any possible way that his predictions could come true? Like I said I'm not really afraid of what other "more logical" people have pointed out about a CME could cause power loss, that has happened before. I'm worried about the catastrophic ideas, something that is going to all but end humanity type stuff. I really hope nothing of that sort happens. :-(
“In all matters of opinion, our adversaries are insane.” - Oscar Wilde
Hello anxxious does not match any existing user name,
If you haven't done so, please read Darren's post.
I mean is there any possible way that his predictions could come true?
Only if everything that science can tell us is wrong, and if he breaks his own string of missed predictions.
"I was glad to be able to answer him promptly and with confidence. Without hesitation, I told him I didn't know." Mark Twain
No. Geryl is wrong, because he don't know anything about the sun (maybe something, but not enough for predict a CME or something else). Anxxious, he is just a writer.
