Summary:

I am not sure where to put this so move if you wish, I am gonna ask a question that i think is a valid one and will be interesting to know what others think..

Hi everybody :)

OK so we know 2012 is NOT going to happen but there are people here that have has worries about it, what I want to know if what do you think will happen when you hear omg it's the end of the world? do you think the planet is just gonna dissapear? do you think that it's just gonna be us that is killed off? what makes you think that there is signs that it is the end? why do people believe what fearmonger websites put on them? why do people think NASA is hiding something? lots of questions really and just want to know what some of you think.

Personally I think nothing is going to happen, I don't believe in the Bible and I don't go to church if anything I am a practicing Pagan but even that is slow these days as I am more interested in physics and science.

Uh, I guess I'll answer this somewhat seriously.

The only 'true' end of the world scenario for /our/ generation is probably some entirely random, global nuclear war. Anything else, like deadly global warming, is beyond our years. Near, but still beyond.

I do have a /bit/ more faith in humanity than what is needed for a global nuclear war, so I'm pretty much in your boat of "Not happening in our lifetimes".

Not answering seriously is fine though, because it should not be taking to seriously, if we thought about it everyday for the rest of our lifes how can we live? how can we do normal things? you can't you just have to cope with the wonkie stuff as well as the good stuff.

My point is what does people expect to happen if it did ever happen
I mean the earth has been around for a long time and it seesm to be doing just fine, I think the thing is we do not know anything about our nice little cosy planet so if things go a little wonkie from time to time we think omg nooooooo it's the end when there is no scientific basis for this at all, some say earthquakes are on the increase? are they really? no they ain't they are just reported more, or omg birds and things are dying it's a sign from God that we are gonna die how? because I don't see any connection.

Hi emmylou,
The only end of the world we know about now is in about 4-5 billion years when the Sun enters its first red giant phase and engulfs the inner planets. Life on Earth will end before the Sun actually becomes a red giant. In about 3 billion years the Earth will become so hot that the oceans will boil away due to the Sun expanding and brightening on its way to becoming a red giant. This comes from John Baez at the University of California, Riverside. If you're interested, you can just search for Baez timeline.
The only other event that could cause our extinction that I personally think might happen before that is being struck by a large asteroid (several miles across). Fortunately, there are none expected to impact Earth within our lifetimes.
We actually know quite a lot about our cozy little planet and what events are normal and expected. Younger people who only started paying attention to the news since hearing the 2012 nonsense, think everything that happens is unusual and scary. That's only because it is new to them.
I am not religious, but I have nothing against those who are, as long as they aren't fundamentalist screwballs. I used to be a Christian, so I can give Bible quotes on occasion for those who are religious and need reassurance from the Bible.
I don't think a global nuclear war will ever happen. Most world leaders are well aware that it would destroy them as well as their enemies, so it wouldn't be to their advantage to start one. Wars are started in order to gain something (territory, recources, and such). There would be nothing to gain by an all-out nuclear war. It would be destroyed and so would the attacker.
Anyway, that's my opinion.

Thats why I posted the questions that I did :) I want to know what people think I mean 2012 is a big thing around the world and people are scared but do they actually know what they are scared of? its a question I have asked myself many times though my own experiences.

I will take a look at that website sounds good :) thank you I just want think sometimes people are looking for things that are not even there if that makes sense? I have to admit that I have always been scared of the asteroid thing but this has been since I was a kid I was always looking in the papers to see what they were saying a terrible habit I still have. I think there is nothing wrong with anybody that believes in the Bible but they need to know what is real and what is not a few days ago I found myself looking in the book of revelations why? because I thought it would make me see why people where jumpy about so many things, it didn't do much I have to say but I looked anyways :)
As things stand I like to think I bring a little light relief to things I have a good knack of making people smile and have a calming effect on them sometimes I don't think of it as a blessing but more or a curse *blushes*

I am hoping in time maybe people that are scared will post here and tell us what they think is going to happen, when i was scared of the LHC and micro black holes I was scared of there being nothing it was just blackness scary thought that is :)

Hi Emmy,
On the asteroid subject, keep in mind that there are none projected to impact Earth within our lifetimes. The Near Earth Object group works to locate and track all such objects. The large ones are easy to find. It is the small ones that we sometimes don't detect until they are relatively close. These are too small to do any widespread damage.

It makes sense. It just isn't a good idea to do it if you are only freaking yourself out with it. You won't get any reliable information from crackpot sites and seldom from YouTube videos or on Facebook. If you want reliable information, you should go to credible sources, like NASA, USGS, NOAA, and .edu sites.

I love NASA what are USGS? and NOAA? I try and stay away from youtube as much as possible especially when trying to steady myself people doctor some crazy videos on there, as for facebook I have some friends that have worked at NASA so thats pretty good for my nerves, I am also a member of three astronomy groups they are so good when I am in the middle of a freakout :)

Hi Emmy,
The USGS is the United States Geological Survey. They monitor volcanoes and earthquakes around the world. They also track wildlife deaths, which I didn't know before all the furor about the birds. NOAA is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. I had been using them as an information source for some time and just learned a couple of months ago that my niece, a marine biologist, works for them. Anyway, they are a great source for many kinds of scientific information.

I really like this question. It really is the basis of a lot of people's fears. I think someone hit it on the head awhile back when they said something along the lines of when you first hear about the 2012 end of the world, your initial fear is so frightening and almost hopeless, that when you hear about it again among your friends or family, you feel the same type of fear even after reading all of these sites.

The first time I heard about it, my wife tried to almost convince me that the Maya had predicted all of this stuff, and they have been correct in all of their predictions before about everything. So I turned to the internet (wrong decision) and searched things about the Maya and found loads of stuff. THAT fear, is what I feel everytime I hear about it. I come here for comfort, because I ought not to go searching myself : )

Oh and I found out my wife had heard it from the History channel "documentary" that our school had showed her history class about the Maya culture. She is the type who will believe anything anyone tells her, and doesn't care about scientific method. She also said "I don't really care though, I am not afraid to die, at least I would die with my family and I know where I am going afterwards." But I had too many goals set up for the future, and the thought of not achieving those goals was horrifying. I also was skeptical of religion, and knew if it existed that I would not be "saved" by the time 2012 would roll around. I find it wrong to force myself to believe out of fear.

So that kind of sums up what I feel whenever I hear 2012, see a combination of numbers with 2012, or even hear the popular term "Oh its not the end of the world!".

Sad, huh?

I wouldn't say that was sad at all, it's real fear and yes you will get some people that do not understand this I find them really closed minded and they only live in their own little world, I am pleased your wife has this kinda outlook on things, my family more or less have the same, I have to say I do not know much about the Mayans calendar at all, apart from what I have read on here and see on the internet. I have watched more or less most things the History channel and well most of it goes over my head to be honest, I am one of these people who even when I am freaking out needs to have the science of the situation instead of just what people are saying. I think the worse thing anybody can do is search for themselves but then again I find myself doing exacually the same thing on many occasions.

I think it also has a lot to do with mind set aswell because once you have something in there it is really hard to get rid of and you will find yourself doing connections with stuff that happens in the world and things that are a little out of balance it's not a nice place to be but it is also one of the hardest things to explain to someone who is not scared at all.

My mind can be a pretty horrible place, and I've seen a lot of movies that have not helped this at all; I've stopped watching those types of films, though.

But, basically, when I hear people talk about the end of the world.. I generally picture what movies portray, because that's the worst I've seen, since in my real life I've never witnessed a person die or be killed. The movie 2012? War of the Worlds? If aliens aren't involved and zapping everyone, I just imagine absolute chaos. People going crazy and killing others, big tidal waves, hurricanes, tornadoes, the earth just splitting open and people falling into these seemingly never-ending cracks in the land, etc. etc. Or something like I Am Legend. Some virus getting out of control and killing off most of the population.

I used to fear asteroids, and unfortunately I grew up with an older brother who always liked to terrify me by lying about aliens invading.

WOW I can see why your mind sometimes wonders must be horrible when you have freakouts, do you do reaseach and try to steady yourself? I know that movies can be so bad with the science aspect of things but I can see where you are coming from. are you getting better now?

I have to say I loved War of the Worlds I have it on DVD and CD :) I have also seen 2012 it was an ok movie but i prefered The day after Tomorrow.

I am sorry that your brother did that to you :( it's not very nice at all hope things got better as you got older?

I try to do research, but.. I usually end up finding bad stuff. xD; It figures. When it comes to researching for papers and essays, I can find reliable information easy, but about stuff that terrifies me? I'm drawn to everything bad and scary. So I try to.. not research, or if I do, I go to sites like NASA or something like that, which is what I've been doing a lot lately. I am getting better now, yes. I was a wreck when I first heard about the bird deaths. My head was filled with the thoughts I mentioned in my previous post, but I've come a long way, mainly thanks to this site. :)

I used to love War of the Worlds, but.. I just can't right now. Maybe after 2012 is over and done with I can watch it with ease again, haha. The Day After Tomorrow I liked and can still watch, however. I guess because I find it so unrealistic? I grew up terrified of storms and watched The Weather Channel religiously, so yeah. xD;

Things did get better. I eventually learned to ignore him and he stopped. :)

You are doing the smart thing by avoiding that type of movies. Keep in mind, though, that they are science fiction, not science. None of them have anything to do with reality. The movie makers don't seem to care about having any relationship to anything scientifically realistic in their films. Reality just isn't spectacular enough to make a movie scary and fear is what sells.
Of course hurricanes, tsunamis, and tornadoes are real, but they only affect the particular area where they occur. I grew up in Kansas, tornado central, and I have only seen 2 tornadoes in my life. I've had a number of tornadoes pass by, but have never been affected by one. All of these things have been built up way out of proportion in the minds of young people who see them only in the movies. If you live in a place where any of these things happen, you just need to be prepared and heed the warnings.

Can you imagine Star Trek without warp, cruising away for the next 10 years just to get to Pluto? You would never encounter an alien space ship in your life ever. Even cruising your own solar system

Oh yeah, I'm pretty aware of movie makers and their thoughts. I'm majoring in film right now so I get to learn allllll about that, haha. Most of these guys are in it for the money. That doesn't stop me from being scared of what I see, though. It's like, I know better, but my mind still wants me to feel anxious and terrified sometimes.

I grew up in north central Mississippi and lived there all my life, up until last July when I moved to the Mississippi coast, so I'm well acquainted with severe weather. Never had a tornado directly affect me, thankfully. I used to have a phobia of severe weather, but I've grown out of that. Now it's hurricanes I have to keep an eye on. Luckily there are warnings placed well in advance of those.

As Alene Y said, you are doing the right thing, avoiding this kind of movie. You can watch them, but not taking it seriously, because are pure speculation about future and give some possibilities for a future end. However, there is just a tiny possibility that movies like "The day after Tomorrow" would become truth, because have many errors. In the Internet you find some of these errors. Not just the famous footage mistakes that happen in almost every film, but scientific mistakes too. For example: it is impossible that Earth temperature decrease would be so fast as the movie The Day after Tomorrow shows us.
But if you need some fun, perhaps this type of film would be nice.

I've always enjoyed disaster and apocalyptic type films, but after fighting the 2012 hoax for nearly 3 years, I've developed a distate for them. It's not that they cause me any fear (they don't), it's because of how they are scaring young people. I can't say this often enough. Movies are made for money, not to depict anything even close to reality. I finally watched 2012 since I didn't have to contribute any money to Sony Pictures to do it. My friends had already rented it. Guess what. It was so predictable, nonsensical, and boring that I fell asleep! I tried to watch it again and the same thing happened. So I've seen it in bits and pieces, enough to know that it is utter nonsense.

I wasn't saying they should stop making apocalyptic films, only that I just don't feel like watching them anymore after three years of fighting the 2012 hysteria.
Yes, kids should be properly educated, but it isn't happening. I think the miserable excuse for education in the US since 2000 is deplorable. I call it the Every Child Left Behind Act. Since schools won't receive federal funding if they don't have enough students passing the standardized tests, they are only teaching them the information needed to pass the test. Many teachers hate this system and some have resigned because of it.

Stopping is one thing, avoiding is actually going to make your fear worse because something forbidden is far more attracting than something not forbidden.

I should do something else, look at the movie but with no sound. Or look at the movie and play a CD with some funny Donald duck voices. Maybe you could put up cartoon network through the speakers and watch the movie with the sound turned down.

The biggest influence on any scary movie is the scary sound.

Hey Emm!!!

I think that my biggest fear (and I don't directly associate it with 2012 because I think it's too soon for it) is the weather / global warming scenario. We have seen some pretty strange weather lately; and I'm not associating it with anything specific, but it does kinda worry me (what can / does it all mean)? I am just hoping that since we have been on the 'green' bandwagon, we can help stop the warming / greenhouse gas emissions, etc. It's like, what are we going to have to look forward to if the warming continues? What's going to happen if the polar caps and glaciers keep melting away and disrupting the natural flow of currents and whatnot? How bad is the weather going to get, especially in terms of drought and conditions that could affect our food supplies?

I have tried to do some of my own research on the subject but I haven't gotten much clarity on things because some information says that global warming isn't the real 'issue' while other information says it is a 'dire' issue. And I have a hard time trying to decipher true from trash since I'm uneducated in the matter.

When I saw the satellite picture last week of the 49 states to have snow on the ground at one given time like it did, it kinda freaked me out. Florida was the only state to not have snow on the ground and it struck a cord within me that didn't set too well. I really don't think that we will see any problems from this in 2012, but I am fearful about the possibility of massive weather anomalies in the future. Just like the song, "Another Way to Die" by Disturbed.

Global warming is indeed real, but it isn't an abrupt change. It is a gradual rise in average temperatures. This can cause changes in weather patterns, including more storms. Because many people misunderstand the term and think that it means it will just get steadily warmer everywhere, they tend to discount it because they sometimes experience colder weather. Because of this, the preferred term is now global climate change. We aren't going to have any "Day After Tomorrow" scenario, at least not in any time frame that you need to worry about. If the warming continues unchecked, sea levels will rise gradually as the glaciers melt. This will eventually cause flooding of low-lying coastal areas. We are adding more clean energy usage to reduce use of fossil fuels, thereby reducing the amount of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere. The wholesale release of chlorofluorocarbons has been stopped. This should help the ozone layer stop thinning. One thing that we aren't doing, but should be, is stopping the destruction of the rain forests (sometimes called the lungs of the planet). They take in CO2 and release Oxygen.
To summarize, global warming is real but isn't going to cause our extinction anytime in the near future, if ever. If we were not taking action to slow it, then it could in the distant future.

You also know that I have a big thing with the weather too, I think it's because it's so real you know what I mean? it effects us all, there are so many good websites out there that you can rack the weather and keep an eye on it. I think weather anomalies will get worse but we will adapt to them just like we have done for billions of years.

Thanks for the breakdown, I do feel more optimistic about it. Like I said, I don't think (that if anything) we would see extreme affects in 2012 or because of 2012, but it definitely did have me a little concerned.

Lol, I actually enjoyed "The Day After Tomorrow," but not as a documentary (or reality-based) type film…and at least if that scenario DID happen, it wouldn't annihilate the entire human race all at once. It didn't scare me like 2012 did. And as far as 2012 the movie goes, I didn't even watch it for the first time until last summer!

Yeah Emm, I think the same thing..we will adapt to living with crazy weather like we have in the past. For me, living in New Orleans, I've had to run from hurricanes since I was a baby…so that part will be nothing new for me :((( I just worry about irreparable damage and if it's there, how bad is it? Just yesterday morning, I was watching "Ecopolis" episodes on the Science Channel and these scientists had some really innovative ideas for new technology to keep up with the 'green' theme. That made me feel pretty confident, too!!

Yup!

And I actually also think that we can revert the global warming, by creating the technology to clean up the atmosphere and any pollution created by us. But in order to do this we need big investments in science and technology. Especially finding means to generate more power more efficiently and nanotechnology.

Now interestingly the global warming can also be a source for more power. Heat gets trapped more in Earth atmosphere so we have more power for windmills, for example.

Hello Elsgeorge,

You should not worry about the Global Warming, because:
1 - We have today the ecological consciousness that we didn't have many years ago
2 - We have today technology to stop it.
3 - The human being is resistent. Any change on the weather wouldn't be catastrophic to us, because we can adapt to the most extreme conditions.

Within some years, this will be a solved problem.
But instead of being worried, you should help. There are many solutions to braking the GW, that are simple, but very efficient. It's a real problem, and it's more severe than ever, but stop it is not as impossible.
As Alene Y said before, the GW is many times misunderstood by many people, that think it is a "warmer weather in all the world", but it's not like that. Actually, it's just a change, and it's not as fast as some people say although we can't just relax.

Thanks Tomy!! Yeah, I think I'm ok with it and I completely agree. We do have the technology and the means to fix and therefore help prevent the affects of GW. It's just kinda freaky to digest how extremely hot it was over the summer with numerous places reaching record temperatures…and at the same time, winter comes and places are also reaching record lows, too (not to mention all the snow all at one time across the country). It's kinda like, whoa, what's going on…??? Something to stop you in your tracks and makes you think for a moment.

Emm, the app for my phone has headlines that pop up and while I was checking on the weather before we left for school, the article popped up.

Tomy, yeah, the last 3 paragraphs pretty much sum up the article as a projection..as in saying that we are 'overdue' kinda like how we are 'overdue' for a Yellowstone caldera eruption. I posted the link as a prime example of what it is that I fear, not because I absolutely believe it as true.

Bad weather has scared me since I was a kid, I'd have nightmares about powerful thunderstorms…giving me goosebumps just thinking about it!!!

I know how you feel. Ever since I can remember I have been TERRIFIED of storms. So bad it would rule my life. I wouldmt want to go anywhere or do anything if there was just a slight possibility of a storm. I finially went to a therapist and discovered I have anxiety. The thongs o feared were things normal peopledont bat an eye at. After years of being on meds ithought u was cured so I stopped taking them…….baaaaad idea. My fears came back worse than ever and manifested in 2012. It was terrible. Since the I've begun taking anxietymeds again, and with the help of that and this site my fears are under control. Some people just have an unbalance in theirbrains..and I know its just that because I don't know anyone close to me that believes or worries about this 2012 nonsense. Hope you get better and I'm hereto talk anytime! :)

Hi there Lindsay :)

I have always been scared of thunder even now it reduces me to tears and I am 29 I also have a very big fear of the wind I hate it freaks me out so much when it howls. at the minute I am thinking about going to the doctors to get pills to slow my mind down abit I am not liking feeling so bad that I am scared about going outside, thing is I am not sure what has triggered me so badly :(

I take Lexapro. It's a God-sent. And for times where I feel like I'm going to freak out, I have Lorazepam. It's a quick fix. Works fast and I can take it whenever I want, while I take Lexapro once a day. But if I feel like I'm going to have a panic attack, I have my Lorazepam in my purse. I'm 22, and it doesn't bother me anymore. I was always so scared of it, but once my meeds kicked in, I've come to realize I actually like storms. But when a tornado watch is activated, THEN I freak. Maybe you should go to a doc and ask him about these meds. Get your life back :)

Hi Emmy,
Your mention of being afraid of thunder reminded me of a funny incident. I am also frightened momentarily by loud crashes of thunder.
I was managing the lab where I worked and I had a chemist who kept what he called The Captain's Log (a la Star Trek). Early one morning, I was awakened by a tremendous crash of thunder. Both my daughter and I jumped out of bed and ran right smack into each other in the hall. She came and got in bed with me. My dogs and cat were also scared and the next thing I knew, I had the whole crew in bed with me.
I was telling the story at break and John walked up just as I made that last statement. His entry in the Captain's Log that day was "Alene has whole crew in bed with her"

I have always been scared, used to make myself go to sleep as a kid just till it was over, then my dad would say "it's ok huni it's just God playing bowls" LOL never helped to be honest, but suppose looking back now I can smile about it hehe :)
