It means that instead of being concerned about 2012, some people should be more concerned about Global Warming, that is a real danger for the world. But, of course, we shouldn't be sooo worried about it, because are just statistics, and is something we can stop.

Don't be scared or hopeless…

Me too. It seems like -all- the world is hopeless, and when I see Greenpeace working in those projects, it makes me feel better and a bit more hopeful. When I see those statistics saying that the last year was the hottest, for me are just statistics, while other people gets hopeless.
