I was star gazing earlier outside my house, see because where I live/work at a horse farm is more towards the city so the lights make it hard to see any stars in the night sky down there. But up here at this house we are out in the country more and the sky is really clear. I was looking around and saw what I think to be Orion.. so cool. I also saw a really really bright bluish star that I thought I had saw lastnight as well. Investigating on the internet leads me to the conclusion that this was Sirius. Is that true? Very cool looking. This whole subject has gotten me really interested in astronomy/physics.

Sirius is the brightest star and it does appear bluish. Orion's belt is one of the easiest things to pick out with the naked eye, three bright stars in a tilted line. If your star was to the left of Orion's belt, it should be Sirius.

Go back and take a look when the star is low in the sky, and you will see something really cool.

Sirius is bright enough to twinkle in colors, so you will see it appear to flash red and blue. What is happening is the atmosphere is breaking up the light like a prism, and because it is so bright, there is enough light to trigger the color receptors in your eye.

This thread reminds me of the sense of wonder and awe one should have when viewing the heavens. Oh, and that I have to get out of the house at night when the weather warms up.

Makes me feel kinda sad for those who look up and don't feel wonder, but instead feel fear.

Thats so neat, Astro! I will definitely look out for that tonight! I also see a bright star or maybe planet at night near the moon, and it's still visible in the morning. What is it that I am seeing? Its very pretty :)

I think is Jupiter and it's four moons.

In the morning right now would be Venus. Jupiter is also out, but that's in the evening.

In the morning was Venus. Saturn was also visible but not that bright.
Jupiter is getting lower over the horizon in the evening.
(Assuming you live in the Northern hemisphere)

I keep telling my family I'm going to get a degree astrophysics, lol. I never used to really take notice to these things. I am however now very interested, and I am amazed at the night sky, it's is truly beautiful.

Yeah, it happened the same thing with me. Do we really need a doomsday prediction to make us look to the sky? :-)

If you have an iPod touch, then there are some very good astronomy programs that you can take with you into the field.
I use StarmapPro most as one of the 4 I installed.

On my computer I have Starr Night which I use a lot.

okay totally random but it's there a tribe that worships that star it was in a book at school. It stated they knew a lot about it like sumerian and etc. yeah i don't believe that ,but I was just curious if this was true. I don't really trust the book I mean okay you all no i love paranormal ,but it went into nostradmus predicting all this crap ,yellowstone etc so yeah it was a woo book ,but hey it was fun to read.

If they predicted the end or not, it doesn't matter. I would not take them seriously anyway.
