I recently posted a thread on here about earthquake swarms on the rise in Arkansas that I was worried about - which, by the way, my mind is now set at ease thanks to you all. Anyway, I am a regular visitor of the site Above Top Secret - I've seen a lot of you saying how a bunch of "crackpot" this site is, and things of the like, but honestly.. the things on there scare me. People that posts threads 9/10 have information backing up their thread. I recently just read one http://abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread664473/pg1 - Basically stating that scientist don't know what eff they're doing anymore. Is something going to happen soon? Is there proof of extra-terrestrial life forms visiting earth, or even.. protecting us from certain calamities? I'm just afraid that I will not be prepared if something serious happens. Are times really changing? Should we be worried..? Please read the thread before commenting on here bashing me :/ I would like to know honest opinions about this, rather than.. words to calm me down.
I don't have time to sit through all the information involved with a 2 hour plus video on top of all of ATS's claims, but let's take a quick look at the article's "headliner":
Normally, one focuses on the claims and evidence an individual makes, and not their credentials. However, ATS took time to hawk Susan Joy Rennison's is credentials, so I feel it appropriate to respond since they are attempting an argument from authority (a logical fallacy). She has a bachelor's degree with honors. What this translates to is a basic degree, but she got a high grade point average. Then she spends 25 years of her life in "alternative free thinking", which means pseudoscience. In that time, she has written books for profit, but not written any peer reviewed papers I could find. She has dedicated her life to advancing pseudoscience and not advanced the wealth of scientific knowledge in any way.

Short form, without spending hours on watching the video, checking each source, etc, is she is no authority figure.
People that posts threads 9/10 have information backing up their thread.
No, they really don't. Most threads at ATS are long, drawn-out exercises in imagination. Don't fall into the trap of confusing lots of words with scientific merit. This:
…is a prime example of a rambling, dishonest, completely bogus piece of work. The poster engages in what we call quote mining. He takes one tiny comment purportedly from a NASA official to suck you in, then he launches into a series of ridiculous claims that have no support whatsoever. If you look closely at the alleged NASA quote and what the poster eventually claims, the former in no way supports the latter. He also attaches some images completely out of context, without citing any sources, even throwing in the infamous Germany sinkhole for good measure. They have nothing do with anything he says, which is fine with him because he's just trying to scare people. To the point, clouds can do all kinds of strange things, and everything in those images can be explained scientifically. Just because they aren't common, that doesn't mean they're unusual or a sign of anything bad.
Also, as ThreeFang states above, Susan Rennison is not the most scientifically sound source of information, to say the least.
Basically stating that scientist don't know what eff they're doing anymore.
That's just absurd.
Is something going to happen soon?
I can't predict the future. What kind of "something" do you mean?
Is there proof of extra-terrestrial life forms visiting earth, or even.. protecting us from certain calamities?
No, just the overactive imaginations of believers. There's no evidence that aliens even exist. Even if they do exist — and I fully expect that life probably has evolved elsewhere in the universe — the odds of them finding Earth and interacting with humans are almost zero.
I'm just afraid that I will not be prepared if something serious happens.
If you're worried about disasters, then keep a week's worth of food and water on hand. Make sure you've always got some working flashlights and a radio with fresh batteries. Nothing wrong with that. Just keep things in perspective, and don't believe anything you read on ATS.
Are times really changing?
When have they not? Time is change.
Should we be worried..?
Nope. At least not about any of this. Worry about your health and that of the people you care about. Don't worry about the silly claims of doomsayers and pseudoscience proponents.

the things on there scare me.
That's problem number one.
People that posts threads 9/10 have information backing up their thread.
9 out of 10 2012 proponents have information backing up their claims. The very notion of having information doesn't then make that information correct or even physically viable, does it? I've got information on how to turn lead into gold. It doesn't work, but I've got the info.
Basically stating that scientist don't know what eff they're doing anymore.
If everything was known, there'd be no point in science. At the same time, the vast majority of science is conducted with accurate, predictive models in place - protons aren't being smashed into each other at 99.999994% the speed of light at the LHC for fun, just to see what happens, they're being smashed together in an attempt to prove theories correct and discover missing pieces to the puzzle. To be honest, I don't even know where such a claim that nobody knows what they're doing would come from.
Is something going to happen soon?
Sure, care to name that something? Earthquakes are a safe bet, thunderstorms aren't bad, heck solar storms are picking up. Stubbing toes, crashing cars, tripping on a loose paving slab, they're all going to happen with some amount of probability, but their happening won't in turn lead to the instant destruction of the planet or whathaveyou.
Is there proof of extra-terrestrial life forms visiting earth, or even.. protecting us from certain calamities?
In a word, nope.
I'm just afraid that I will not be prepared if something serious happens.
I am woefully ill-prepared for Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Hurricanes, Asteroids, Alien invasions, the Sun inexplicably turning into a black hole… but I'm woefully ill-prepared because round here there is simply no reason to prepare for it, the probability of any of those happening to me aren't worth fussing over. Elsewhere in the world, Earthquakes and the like are of course more probable, and should of course be prepared for out of common sense, but why fret over anything bigger and vastly unlikely to happen in your lifetime, or even to happen at all?
I am a regular visitor of the site Above Top Secret
That's wrong. People there are not scientists and will try to scare you with conspiracy theories about 2012.
the things on there scare me.
I knew it.
From the website:
When the sun got quiet some while ago
The Sun didn't get quiet. Did you see the last flares?
Strange cloud formations, sun dogs, pillars of light, sink holes ,and lots of other very weird anomalies that are occurring .
Why "strange cloud formations", "sun dogs", "pillars of light" and "sink holes" are weird? These are well-known phenomena.
The last years if you look back were stunning if you look at weather patterns like the auroras
There are lots of people who point out that these object seen on SOHO Images could be UFOs, I don’t know because I’m not an expert on what I see on these pictures but maybe some do have that kind of characteristics?
The objects seen on SOHO images are not objects, just… things.
If you look at the SOHO pictures you can see a lot activity and its going to be increasingly extended. For example our sun was hit by twenty-five sun diving comets in ten days, that’s a lot!
Yes, that's a lot, but not weird at all.

Don't read that site again, please. They are morons.
Well, I know everyone here is going to all say "Don't go to ATS" anymore. And you shouldn't. But you will, because like a few of our visitors, you have an addiction to fear. You /thirst/ to be scared. I should know, because I use to have this.
That was until I realized how utterly retarded that logic is.
There are better things you can do with your time to get a thrill. Play a difficult game, read a suspenseful fantasy book. A lot of things, honestly.
ATS /does/ have it's good members. People who dedicate their free time to debunk every piece of crap story posted there. They ARE worth admiring, but really… you're digging for diamonds in a radioactive mountain of shit.
Stop going to ATS. Stop scaring yourself on purpose. It's time to grow up.
But you will, because like a few of our visitors, you have an addiction to fear. You /thirst/ to be scared. I should know, because I use to have this.
Yes it is a pure addiction, of the emotional roller coaster that this fear creates.
But how did you get rid of this fear Moo?
I just said how I did.
"That was until I realized how utterly retarded that logic is."
When you start debunking one thing, it begins to cascade into a beautiful torrent of realizing how much all of this is ALL a bunch of bull. That is why I took an active approach of presenting scenarios to this forum, providing my own input, and asking for everyone elses as well.
I started to post with an automatic skeptical view, and that's what I have now. I don't buy into anything at first glance. That's retarded. Fancy words make not a valid case.
Being an avid gamer helps a lot, too. I keep entertained. I still sometimes get negative thoughts, but all I do is take a deep breath, remember facts from reality, and come here to get a good laugh at the Latest Doomsday Scenario.
Ultimately, maybe the gaming and care-free ducky-go-lucky attitude helped me out. Who knows. I'm generally a positive and helpful individual. Generally.
Just, I finally decided that fear is one of the stupidest emotions you can /force/ on yourself. Everyone else who seeks fear for a thrill needs to, to.
Thank you Moo, as well as everyone else. Yes, Moo, you are right, I'm addicted to fear. It's probably why I have serious anxiety problems. I feel as though.. if I have nothing to worry about, then something isn't right. Nothing can be perfect, therefore.. I need to worry about it until I can find the true legitimacy in it (if there is any..) The difference between us is I'm not a positive individual. I don't know how to change my perspective on things either - it's not as easy as some may think. I too am an avid gamer, well maybe not "avid" but I do play a lot - and yes, it DEFINITELY helps me a lot. I just think I need to experience new things. In my mind, I know 2012 and things of the like are all a hoax, but then.. there's the other part in me that says "what if they're right?". I'm tired of living in fear.
I know how you feel Amanda, I have anxiety problems too. I am on meds and they help but at the same time recently I have had an almost constant feeling of anxiety. I go out and about, especially since it has been nice, temps in the 70s, here. I feel happy and calm for a while while out and about but I still have that underlying, nagging anxiety. There is only really one person/claim that bothers me about 2012 at all, and most here know who/what that is, so it's a bit easier for me to narrow my anxiety down to what it's from. I just try to come here and talk my problems out and try and reassure myself so I can relax when I'm out and about instead of having messed up thoughts.

I'm not on medication, although sometimes I wish I was. This fear sometimes tears my boyfriend and I apart, as well as my family. None of them understand why I'm so scared - they don't read the things I do.. Who is it that bothers you about 2012? I go on NASA's "Ask an Astrobiologist" website a lot, it helps ease my mind, since they too are debunking 2012 fallacies. I've even submitted a few questions there, which get answered! I can at least admit that I'm getting better - I'm doing so much better than how I was in the beginning.. I used to cry myself to sleep. I haven't gone on ATS all day, which for me, is a lot to say haha.
Geryl's claims have been the really only/main thing that has bothered me about 2012. If it wasn't for that, I don't thing I'd have much anxiety about it. I know what you mean about the family situation, it's weird talking to somebody that you love about something that may make ya seem odd. :-P That's why these forums are good, because you can come here and talk to people without worrying about them thinking you are crazy/odd.

there's the other part in me that says "what if they're right?".
Oh, that's normal. Some guest often comes here to ask things about 2012 and we always notice that the main problem is the damn "what if". What you should do is play, because you said that games help you a lot, right?
Anyway, if you come back to the ATS (you shouldn't) and some article there is concerning you, come back and talk to us and we'll help you.
Don't let the "what if" bother you. :-)
Thanks guys.. I do have but one question left, I suppose. If anything were to actually happen.. that you all knew about, would you tell us? Regardless if it created panic and chaos?
Yes.
I might hesitate a bit and delay it, but I will tell.
Obae would wait til 2012 to tell. :-P

Even if we wanted to, we couldn't "hide the truth". This is a globalized world and hide stuff today is not that simple.
I think the manner is which it is told is important. If something like an asteroid crashing into the earth, I think that the folks here would state it, then discuss the particulars, and who is working on preventing as many deaths as possible, and how people could help themselves. Much like when a hurricane comes, the local authorities tell everyone to leave, board up their windows, etc. In short, the information that will save lives, and not scare people further.
All the others who said we wouldn't hide it are right. If any of the 2012 claims had any validity, we couldn't hide it if we wanted to. Also, if there were some kind of disaster coming, we would want you to know what was coming and be prepared to take the necessary precautions. For instance, if an asteroid were going to hit us, you wouldn't want to remain in the impact area. Have you noticed how people are warned to evacuate when a volcanic eruption is imminent? As snorks said, people are warned of hurricanes, also tornadoes, floods, etc.
We wouldn't hide a major disaster like a huge asteroid impact, but I don't know if the government would keep in secret. However, I am sure about one thing. The government would do everything to save the planet (e.g. deflect the asteroid). Sometimes, work in secret is easier than work with scared people disturbing you. :-)
In my opinion, if the government is doing something to save the planet I am glad.
