Hello all,

Coming on here again with another ATS thread that concerned me, but one that I'm also skeptical about - It was a while back, so I can't link it. I'll give you long story, short. Basically.. Alex Jones (I'm not familiar with him, but from what I've heard, he's basically a big conspiracy theorists - I think? Any info on him would be fantastic, as well as how reliable he is) had a crazed fan begging him to 'come clean' about a caller on his show that claimed to have information about a pole shift (didn't specify which kind..) on March 15, 2011 - this 'person' claimed to have been from the White House, or had some sort of affiliation with government information (the caller, not the fan). As you all know, people on ATS take things way out of proportion, but I'm not going deny - it definitely scared me? I'm only a skeptic because there was no information about there being a 'caller' on Alex Jones' show having info about said things. Anyway.. what I'd like to know; Is Alex Jones reliable? What is his profession? Is he just another shill..? Also.. is there any chance of anything drastic (as far as we know, and can predict) happening on March 15th? I've heard a lot about 'The Ides of March' and things of the like.. I'M SCARED. :( Side note: Please don't rag on me for being a visitor of ATS - I've heard enough -_-

I remember reading conspiracy theories about Alex Jones being a government agent trying to distract everybody from the government's wrong doings by throwing out conspiracy theories or something of the sort a while back. Imagine that, a conspiracy theory about a conspiracy theory. On a side note, what are "The Ides of March"?

The Romans had a sacred calendar where certain days were observed for various Gods. Kalends, Nones, and Ides. 1, 9, 13-15. March was the beginning of the old Roman calendar, and hence their New Year. (They had two new years - Jan.1 (Janus - the calendar reforms of King Numia) and March 15.) Actually this was a holiday where everyone would drink cups of wine to increase their age and picnic in the park. The significance was that Romans were very omen conscious and killing Caesar on the Ides of March would mark the beginning of a new era in Rome. It did - it marked the end of the civil war and the beginning of the next war which ended in Augustus as Emperor.

Debunked 9/11? Alex Jones hasn't "debunked" anything. If anything, he's added to the mindless hysteria and conspiracy circus. However, I can actually agree with him on two things:

1) 9/11/2001 was harnessed by government entities around the world in a massive and ongoing power-grab, whether those governments conspired to perpetuate the event or not.

2) David Icke's beliefs in lizard-men are patently insane.

ATS is a very good source of info but you have to use your own discernment :-)

ATS is a cesspool of nonsense populated by a few diligent critical thinkers who endeavor to keep everyone else from going completely over the edge, with limited success. Many people who gravitate toward conspiracy theories and pseudoscience generally lack in the discernment department to begin with, which is a huge part of the problem.

Or maybe you can just skip to the part where you tell me what Alex Jones supposedly "debunked." You're assuming I haven't seen it. I told you I agree that a government power-grab occurred in the wake of 9/11/2001, but there's really no "debunking" required to reach that conclusion, and I don't need Alex Jones to tell me. Just observe.

What's sad about Jones is he falls into the same self-imposed discrediting over which he criticizes David Icke. It doesn't matter how right he is about government power-grabs, police state behavior, the unconstitutionality of certain legislation or what have you. As long as he attributes everything to the nefarious, imaginary "NWO" and Christian-hating PTB, he's going to look like a crackpot, just like David Icke looks like a crackpot when he talks about shape-shifting lizard-men.

I actually consider Jones a tragedy, because he has some potential as a libertarian activist, potential that he squanders on conspiracy theories and religious paranoia.

Even if that is true, so what? I seriously doubt they have the most active members, but they run on a custom platform and have kept the same database for about a decade. More or less anybody who ever registered is still registered.

It's humorous to read old threads that were stirring up hysteria years ago about imminent disaster, only to quietly go away when nothing happened.

I have no idea what you mean by "some info" and "really useful," but anything of any use at all is probably going to come in the form of someone refuting a piece of nonsense posted by someone else. Phage, stereologist, weedwhacker and Chadwickus are examples of good posters. However, many people who gravitate toward conspiracy theories and pseudoscience generally lack in the discernment department to begin with, which is a huge part of the problem. Do I really need to elaborate? If so, maybe you're a bit short on discernment yourself. It doesn't take long to realize that most of the threads authored there are pure fantasy.

While I can halfway admire his opposition to big, intrusive government, I'm gonna have to go with "no."

Every so often, some weirdo on ATS, who will often claim to be a government insider, alien prophet or what have you, starts a long, rambling thread about some near-future date, on which some spectacular, magical, or deadly event is supposed to occur. This person will most often offer no evidence whatsoever, but simply string as many fear-inducing claims together as possible, then assure that the information is 100% true. Most recently to my knowledge, some person claimed that the "new consciousness" would start some time earlier this month. The day came and went with nothing changing, of course. However, mystics frequently leave themselves an out, wherein only people who are "tuned in" properly can detect these magical changes. This protects them from having to explain why their ridiculous predictions never come true.

I can't predict the future, so I can't sit here and tell you that nothing will happen on March 15. I can tell you that there's no evidence that a magnetic pole shift could occur in full by March 15, even if one is going on right now. It certainly can't happen suddenly on any one day. Such things take hundreds to thousands of years, and someone is likely to notice very little effect of this over the course of any one human lifetime.

There's nothing to be scared of, and there's nothing wrong with visiting ATS, so long as you can sort fact from fiction. I visit there regularly myself, just to keep up with what the woo artists are doing. Just keep your b.s. detector turned on.

I've definitely seen those types of people on ATS.

Well, all I wanted to know was if there was a possibility of anything (i.e pole shift). I realize you said that there's basically no possibility of a magnetic pole shift, but what about physical? I've read all the articles on here, but I don't know - I'm always skeptical that something could just come out of nowhere and make it happen. I feel stupid.

I can usually detect 'b.s' but, sometimes things on ATS are so believable, you don't know what side to choose (believer, nonbeliever) I've stopped going there as frequently as I used to because it only causes me to wreak more havoc on my mentality.

Hi Amanda, You were right the first time. You can wreak havoc or wreck a car.
A physical pole shift (rotational poles) is the one that can't happen. A magnetic pole reversal does sometimes happen, but it isn't an abrupt reversal. It takes a long time to complete, ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand years. Even if one could begin by 2012, it wouldn't matter because these have no effect on us.

A "physical" pole shift (misnomer, because magnetism is also physical) is called true polar wander, which can and does happen, but only over millions of years. You would never notice it. Also thrown into the 2012 bag and grossly misrepresented is the concept of crustal displacement, but this idea was discredited decades ago by plate tectonics.

The b.s. at ATS is near limitless. Every time a doomsayer's claim fails (as always is the case), someone else or even that same doomsayer is right there with a new one. It's funny sometimes to Google doom claims and conspiracy theories from 7 or 8 years ago, and seeing old ATS threads where people made outrageous proclamations with the same surety that you see proponents displaying today, but none of those claims ever came true.

One thing I have been wondering is show does True Polar Wonder fit in to PG's claims? I still don't know what he means by a "polar climb" that the Americas are supposed to be in. But as far as continents shifting locations like he claims, where does that add in? I mean it is one thing to claim that the earth will tip over, but I don't get where it comes from that the continents will move all of a sudden, or sink or whatever.

Magnetic pole shifts (geomagnetic reversals) take centuries. Moreover, the magnetic field strength of the Earth is currently too high for such an event to take place in the next several centuries.
So I can give you a definitive no for such an event on March 15th.

I quite enjoy seeing people come up with specific predictions for specific dates because they are unfailingly wrong. A couple of years ago we had dear Blossom Goodchild with her giant UFO prediction and then there's the prediction by that old fossil Harold Camping to look forward to in May. If only I could meet these people and have a wager with them.

Ha - took a guess at the wreak/wreck thing. Anyway, I knew in the back of my mind no such thing would happen - especially not by March 15, I just needed to know you all's opinion on such a topic. If there was any legitimacy in the statement. I know magnetic pole shifts won't do anything to us, just mess with our equipment that relies on our magnetic field. I have read that something physical COULD change the poles? I suppose, like some massive object knocking Earth's axis off. (I know, this is far-fetched, but it's the best I can do) Oh well. I should just become a scientist and debunk my own retarded theories, as well as others.

Sure, but the problem of the Earth's axis being 'off' from what we're familiar with would be the least of your worries in an impact event strong enough to do such a thing - I'd be far more concerned with the rock beneath my feet melting or everyone suddenly being hurled headfirst into the nearest object still attached to the ground, for example.

It is kind of fun to think what would happen in any given situation, even the absurd situations proponents claim, and it always turns out that it's never as simple as 'the Earth flips', or 'the Earth stops' or whatever - in many cases, you wouldn't want to be on the Earth when their claims are followed through to their physical conclusions, let alone in a bunker somewhere.

Still, it's a good thing most of these claims fall flat on their faces before we have to work out all the little details.

Only when it collides with Earth and is itself very massive. Something the size of Mars maybe.
But in regard some gravitational or electro-magnetic field, it has to actually start to orbit the Earth for a few billions of years to do something. Our Moon is for example doing it for the last few billions of years.

I dont get much of all these conspiracy theories im just a kid i stumble appon these things when Im worried about something i did not know about march 15 untill today i was pretty mad since i already debunked 2012 and may 2011 now i have to debunk this enough worries… But theyre talking about a shift wich they clearly dont know nothin about it takes years to finish by the time its shifted life will go on as it movies slowly and does not cause big earthquakes afcourse earthquakes heppan during shifts but there normal from time we have big ones its pretty much normal.

Where is GOD In all these theories we know nobody knows they time or day afcourse a shift does not mean the end, but think about it.

That video was presented as 'evidence' on ATS when this infamous thread was going around (the thread about a pole shift happening on 031511). I never took the time out to watch it because the folks here, and quite a few people on ATS 'debunked' this ridiculous proposal. That's not changing that fact that I too, wouldn't mind if you all could give us some insight about this video.. Seems a bit alarming.

I have rarely come across such a collection of pure nonsense in a single video.
Perhaps I should be grateful because I now know where the 15th March 2011 date comes from. It's the date when Comet Elenin reaches opposition, that is to say it will be in the opposite part of the sky to the Sun and will therefore be highest in the night sky at midnight.

Why should the doomsday nuts should think that this event would cause a pole shift? The planets Jupiter - Neptune reach opposition every year (Mars every second year). Why don't these events cause pole shifts? At this time, the comet will be 2 AU from the Earth, twice the distance to the Sun. Mars is much closer than this at opposition. Then there is the small matter of mass. The planets are something like a billion to a trillion times more massive than this comet.

As I said in another answer, a scale model would be represented by the Earth being a sphere of 1 metre diameter, the comet being a grain of sand and at its closest to us it would be 3 km away. At opposition, it would be over 20 km away! Pole shift indeed! It's rather like sitting in your back garden and expecting to be sent tumbling out of your deckchair by a fly passing by in the next country.

The video also includes the obligatory lies, distortions and ridiculous assertions. We are told that the Chilean earthquake of 2010 shifted the Earth's axis by 3 degrees. Not quite! The calculated figure was 3 inches. Converted to degrees of latitude at the Earth's surface, the figure would be 0.0000007 degrees. I think they're guilty of a slight exaggeration there.

We are then shown a diagram of the comet's orbit and hear of dire happenings when it "breaks through" the ecliptic plane in early March. But:
1) The comet doesn't reach the ecliptic plane until September.
2) The ecliptic is an imaginary line. There is no more problem in crossing it than driving across a line of latitude in your car.

Then there's still more nonsense. Because the comet passes between the Earth and the Sun in September, we're told that 9/11 was a 10 year advance warning for this event. I suppose that if conspiracy theorists can't work 9/11 in somewhere, they'll be thrown out of the conspiracy club.

It all boils down to conspiracy nuts and non-scientists (which they always are) not having a clue and attributing all sorts of dire effects to comets which in reality are the largely harmless cosmic dust of the solar system.

I like different perspectives when talking about space and distance. Biken uses a good one here.

Using the Earth being the size of a basketball perspective, it would make this comet smaller than a marble at 3 miles away.

I myself never realized how huge space is until Phil Plait's post on how far the moon is from us. That probably means all these 2012ers don't either.

The voice of that woman is annoying. Really, she is not a scientist at all, she doesn't know what she is talking about.
Comet Elenin has nothing to do with Earth rotational axis, nor with earthquakes… nothing to do with Earth.
And the explosion in Colombia didn't provoke any rotational pole shift.

Minute 3:18, she uses another video to prove her right. On the video, the guy says "the blast came during a shift change". She is so stupid that didn't realize that the broadcaster didn't say "rotational shift change", but another kind of "shift", that I do not know what it means. But, obviously it's not a rotational axis one.

Minute 3:28: "most people are going to assume that he is talking about a shift change on the workers schedules but that wording was put in there on purpose". What is she talking about? The broadcaster is talking about workers schedules. Oh, what does she know? She is a jerk.

Minute 4:12: "there was a gas explosion in Ohio also and that's caused by changes in the Earth". So, explosions are "changes on the Earth"? If my house explodes then a pole shift is happening?
The explosion in Colombia was caused because "a methane gas buildup ripped through the underground coal mine" (Fox News).

That sounds like another stupid claim.

Hey Bikenbeer you'r info told me alot i found alot of negative info online wich i hoped would be positive , you'r info is good, i dont understand alot about this, i know comets have before already collided and went past the earth or got close like 1 popular comet Comet Halley. Some articles say the comets size is Un-Known , but how big are comets? And what they say that comets have things in them that can cause shifts to heppan faster etc… Also they say goverment did it, well why is obama making future plans? Nothing happens unless the comet collides with Earth.

Earth already passed through comet Halleys tail in 1910 or so.
And Earth still get hit by comet debris at fixed periods in time. They are called meteor showers with 2 big known ones called the Perseides and Orionides.

An we do know what comets look like, we just visited one just recently 14th february

Comets are lumps of rock, usually a few kilometres across. They sometimes appear large because gas and dust are driven off them when they get near the Sun.

People who say this don't know what they're talking about. Gravity depends on mass and the mass of comets is tiny compared to planets. The gravitational effect of a comet can be ignored because it is so small.

People say Elenin is actully nibiru, can you explain me what can heppan when a comet gets close to earth and why people do this nonsence.

The Nibiru believers are becoming desperate because of the total absence of any sighting of their fictional planet. So they're clutching at straws to say that anything is Nibiru. This week a comet, last week a hypothetical planet Tyche which may or may not (probably not) be at the outer edges of the solar system. Consistency is not a strong point among these people.

A comet could get pretty close to the earth and still nothing would happen. We could pass through its tail, but the gas is far less dense than our upper atmosphere and would never penetrate. The dust might give us some meteors.
People churn out this nonsense through a lack of understanding of science and a desire to attract attention. It's like the kid at school who likes to tell tall stories and get other kids to say "Gee, is that really gonna happen?" My reaction would be to blow a loud raspberry in their face. I guess these people are kids who never grew up.

I need some reassurance…. I thought this March 15 idea was crazy! But I also read last week, that this week was a global chaos with earthquakes, tsunamis etc. I did not want to believe it. But when I watch the news I can see something coming up every day. Yesterday it was the fish in California, today the earthquake in Japan. I really do not want to believe in all this crap, but I am afraid, very much indeed. I have a one year old little son, I am sooo worried about him, too. Guys, please tell me that nothing out of ordinary is happening in this world!

Here's how it works. If someone predicts 'global chaos' for any random week, they will be able to look back at the end of the week and say "Ah yes, there was an earthquake there, a flood here, a terrorist attack over there" plus any other unexpected events they may care to cherry-pick. This is a very long way from making a successful specific prediction. No special skill or insight is required.
There are earthquakes every day. A magnitude 7+ earthquake, such as the one in Japan, can be expected every three weeks, on average. If I predict a magnitude 7+ earthquake every week, I've a 1 in 3 chance of being right. As for the dead fish, they appear to have died of oxygen starvation after seeking refuge in a harbour which was too small. A perfectly reasonable explanation, as you can read here. Put it down as this week's unusual news story. Next week, there will be another surprise story.
From where I'm sitting in England, a 'once in 3 week' earthquake 6,000 miles to the east and some dead fish 5,000 miles to the west is hardly global chaos.

I think this year is going to be ordinary, as 2010 was an ordinary year too, and 2012 will probably be.

The world should have ended last year, 2010:

Number of deaths from earthquakes: 226,668. 3404 earthquakes.
1265 tornadoes in the USA, causing 45 fatalities.
+/- 23,000 deaths from Influenza.
+/- 400,000 deaths from heart disease.

2010 was a deadly year… Maybe 2011 is going to be a deadly year too, and 2012 as well. If you are still worried about a global chaos that we had last year, but you didn't even realize that, watch the statistics this year and you will see a great global chaos happening with earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes and people dying from influenza. The global chaos happens every year.

maryanne, taken an old news paper, just read it. You will see that the same things happened so many years ago.
Especially he period 1940-1945.

Nothing out of the ordinary is happening. These events have always happened routinely. People just didn't pay much attention to them. That school of fish dying wasn't a big deal, except for the fish. Japan is very seismically active and always has been. They have earthquake drills in the schools there because they have earthquakes frequently.
The March 15 stuff is just horse manure. Don't worry about every ridiculous new claim that pops up and every storm, earthquake, or wildlife dieoff that happens. You'll spend all your time worrying instead of enjoying your little guy while he is still little. They grow up so fast. The world is carrying on as it has done for billions of years and will continue to do for billions more.

Hey Maryanne-I agree, things in the world can be scary at times. I think right now with 2012,pole shifts theories,problems in the middle east,and all those things a lot of people are really on edge, and things that happen seem really crazy or scary at the moment. The middle east and unrest go hand in hand-not really anything new in that area I believe. Fish kills-even a search will show massive ones even bigger than this from the 60's, 70's,80's till today. Its def has happened many times before, and could just be one of the things from nature we dont understand sometimes. And from what I read, Japan is not new to earthqwuakes as it sits on the ring of fire-googe that or even look at the link on this site, and you see how many hve occured there

If memory serves, "Biblical Scholars" also predicted a "Rapture" date for dates in the past as well, and those dates, too, failed.
