8.9 Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan

So, it looks like Japan's been hit with a pretty nasty quake as well as a tsunami. From what I understand, places along the coast near the epicenter have been damaged by the tsunami, and there's reports of injuries in Tokyo. I hope that nobody was killed, and if there are casualties, that they'll be at a minimum. It's a good thing that the Japanese people have been spending decades making sure their buildings are up to snuff for a major quake. I can only imagine if a quake of such magnitude struck a less developed nation.

As a sidebar, how long will it take for 2012ers to say this is a sign of The End? I'm betting not long.

On CNN, I'm hearing that it's now an 8.4

The pictures they have coming in now of an oil refinery ablaze are absolutely haunting. The damage from the tsunami looks pretty bad. The reports of casualties are definitely heartbreaking, too. All of my prayers and good intentions are going to the Japanese people right now. God knows they'll be needing them.

Really? I guess everyone's kind of wishy-washy about it, because I'm hearing that it was an 8.8-8.9! Either way, it's devastating. I heard there's apparently a tsunami warning for Hawaii, and a bunch of other places on the West Coast, pretty much the entire West Coast of the US. I hate to be a pessimist, but I really don't see anything good coming from this?

As for the 2012ers, I'm sure there's already plenty of talk about our impending doom. It definitely has me curious..

What, an Earthquake and a Tsunami? They aren't exactly 'good' to begin with, are they? Generally more destructive than they are beneficial and all that.

Obviously I realize they're both bad, but they weren't what I was speaking in reference to. I'm speaking economy wise, I probably should've stated so.

Tsunami warnings in Hawaii and the western U.S. are to be expected from such massive Pacific quakes.

Of course there's nothing good that can come from such disasters. I just hope this is our one for the year, and it won't be like 2007 when we had four 8.0+ quakes.

Luckily, Japan has tecnology to protect buildings from seismic activity. However, they can't protect japaneses from giant waves that may come after an earthquake… :-(
There is an alert for Hawaii, New Zealand and perhaps Peru.

Let's hope for the best, right?

PS: The 2012ers won't be claiming that this earthquake is a "sign of the apocalypse in 2012", but Harold Camping… grrr…

It won't be long.

Anything that's out of the "norm" will be taken as a Sign of the End. As blunt and cold as it sounds, unfortunately stuff like this happens. As long as we live on Earth, we're at the mercy of her weather patterns and seismic activity.

Why did that volcano erupt just after Japan earthquake? Just read that earthquakes could trigger volcanic eruptions, but only if the volcano is about 500km away from the epicenter of an earthquake. But the epicenter of Japan earthquake is thousands of kilometers away from Mount Karangetang.
Mystery, huh?

I quick wikipedia search shows that this volcano has erupted 41 times since 1675. It erupted last year as well. In 1997 there were some fatalities from an eruption.

It seems to me that this is fairly common, and really doesn't warrant a speculation on whether it was linked to the earthquake.

Ooh yes, the kids at school were all talking about it. And some saying they read somewhere that prior to the 2012 stuff Japan would be drowned underwater. As in, the whole nation of Japan. And this just so happend to be it.

Kids make things up to scare other kids that are gullible. I don't think Harold said that and I can't find anything about Japan being drowned. But be watchful, because soon a woo blog will create a post claiming that.
