I was wondering would this wipe out the planet or destroy all life on earth? its kind of scaring me.
In a word, no.
In a few more words, it's been rated as an accident with local consequences, and even that is an early rating subject to change. Of course, being an accident with local consequences in an area already affected by Earthquakes and Tsunami's does make things harder and slower to gauge, but a Chernobyl or worse it sure aint. Check out the INES for more.
I don't think Japan built anything like that. From what I recall, Japan had a nuclear reactor in which when the earthquake hit it removed the cooling units or something like that and that they are trying to fix it now.
I wouldn't really say it's anything to worry that much about. While it is a concern, Japan knows how to manage their own stuff pretty well. And I doubt it would do anything that drastic. If it's anything like Cheyrnoble, the area would be radiated. But I don't really see that happening.
Everything is proceeding as I have forseen. Wait… when did that happen?
If one of those other ones at that plant meltsdown like the one they are trying to prevent will that wipe out the U.S. and the life on earth if the wind blows it over to the U.S. or around the planet or is it just local for japan and places close to there?
It isn't going to "wipe out the U.S." or life on this planet. Jesus Christ. Even in a worst case scenario, it's not going to do that even to Japan, and you are unlikely to notice any ill effects in the U.S. We're talking about a nasty situation that might affect a lot of people, but not something than can even begin to threaten civilization.
I have also heard that the nuclear incident may get worse and that the radiation would blow over to the western U.S. would this happen? Also I have heard rumors that the media is not giving all the info and some trying to make it sound less severe.
Ha… ha… conspiracy again. Please, not conspiracy theories anymore, ok?
The crackpots are, as usual, fools that need to create conspiracy theories like "the media is not giving all the information" to prove they right. I'm sick of these theories. I really am.
I have also heard that the nuclear incident may get worse and that the radiation would blow over to the western U.S
No. At most, the nuclear incident would cause the japaneses to suffer from radiation for many time.
Currently there is not evidence of a meltdown and the more time it passes the less likely it will happen.
Even if radiation would blow over to the US, it would be so diluted that it is nearly at the same basic background levels because of the distance. Some very sensitive radioactivity detectors might go off but that does not mean it is a high level.
Yes I live in an area 2000 km away where Chernobyl dust came down and I even went to an area about 20 km from Chernobyl in 1995. I am back and did test on my clothing and I did not measure additional radioactivity.
Now I heard its the worst accident since chernobyl but i'm hearing different things from people so I don't know.
I read earlier that there were 50 technicians that volunteered to stay behind at the facility and work to stop anything big from happening. Those 50 brave volunteers will be the reason a catastrophe is averted.

Those workers are putting their lives on the line to prevent a disaster. They have more courage than most of us could ever dream of possessing. Once everything is said and done, these people need to be given the highest of honors.
Hooo, boy. My parents have the news on, and all I hear is 'OH NO, RADIATION HEADING OUR WAY!!11!11!"
Did we all die when Chernobyl blew? No.
Whenever American media hears the word "nuclear", they jump all over it and plaster the word everywhere they can. Can I hear less sensationalism and a bit more rational thought?
Guess that's too much to ask in a death-and-doomsday obsessed media.
I swear, I didn't use to hate the media that much until I start to read The Huffington Post site and its friends. The media itself is not so fool. Worse are the people who believe in media without any basic knowledge. This kind of people jump into culverts because his friend told him/her to do so.
I actually read on a site today that said it was time to go out and buy duct tape and emergency supplies, so you can be the first person in your car to evacuate the West coast of the US. The site was being passed around on Facebook…to "spread the word". I was disgusted by this because there is no need to cause panic like that. I thought of this when I read your comment on believing what ever you hear. I don't think we are to that point yet. I live on the West Coast and those kind of comments are not what anyone needs to hear and believe right now, especially since the engineers in Japan are working so hard to fix it.
Despite the large number of experts saying the risk from the radioactive plume is minimal, people are convinced that there's really something much worse we're not being told about. So, what, do these people know more about radiation and nuclear power plants than the people who have college educations and years of experience? I'm seriously wondering how conspiracy theorists think they have everything in the world figured out and that they're smarter than the Evil Government.
I have been listening to these conspiracy theories, although they don't call it "conspiracy". Actually, the people who say that never mention that word, but mention "cover up". Well, just synonyms, waste of time.
However, a conspiracy here is not that impossible. Conspiracy theories are not to be proven, because then it's not a conspiracy. It's a very public fact. It goes on internet, television and news paper. Conspiracy theories are speechless. The proponents can't prove, but they have a 'feeling that there is something weird going on'. That's probably their motto.
The most important scientists, UN and the governments will say that there is nothing to worry about. And that's the phrase that support every conspiracy theory. They are never alone, because gullible people will believe that something is indeed going on, and the government is not telling us a word, but if someone asks proof, they will stay quiet. They still have the believers.
That's what is going on here. Big events always receive extra attention. ;-)
