There are articles saying that the recent earthquake in Japan is related to some big solar flares that happened shortly before. Could they have triggered the earthquake? Is it just me or has this year been a particularly bad one for natural disasters?
In a word, no.
Solar flares have no means to influence the Earth directly, the hazards they pose start way up above your head in the magnetosphere. If there were no magnetosphere 'shield' you'd get a radiation risk, but no risk of Earthquakes - as the name suggests, the Earth is to blame for Earthquakes.
Has it been a bad year, I wouldn't say so. I'm sure someone posted from statistics on large Earthquakes here recently, some years you get loads, the next year you don't, it's just the way it is. The amount of attention an event gets can skew perceptions of whether it's been a bad year or not. Japan gets attention for being a massive quake, whereas the large enough quake in New Zealand is arguably already forgotten about, and I could say the same for Haiti - you'd only remember it took place if you were reminded of it by someone, or had a direct link to it.
Quoted from SpaceWeather
"COINCIDENCES: Many readers have asked if this week's terrible earthquake in Japan was connected to the contemporaneous geomagnetic storms of March 10th and 11th. In short, no. There is no known, credible evidence of solar activity triggering earthquakes. Moreover, in the historical record, there are thousands of examples of geomagnetic storms without earthquakes, and similar numbers of earthquakes without geomagnetic storms. The two phenomena are not linked. "

I'd wager that those articles don't come from scientific sources.

Not that I've noticed, and we hear about just about everything here. Every time something even remotely of note happens as of late, somebody thinks the world is ending and the 2012 doomsayers are magically correct, despite having been shown to be completely wrong. Of course, it's only March, so who knows? Even if we have a particularly bad year in regard to natural disasters, what exactly do you think will be the significance in that? In my view, it isn't significant at all.
It just seems like the world has had so much havoc these past months. Dead birds, mudslides, earthquakes, flooding, storms, war…I just hope things start to turnaround soon. My anxiety just starts getting better then the world has a new crisis.
Take any news paper from 1 year ago, 5 years ago, 10 years ago.. there is nothing that weird.

When has there not been?
My anxiety just starts getting better then the world has a new crisis.
Well, you're going to have to understand at some point that there's always a crisis somewhere.
