That guy is a nutjob! The full moon caused the Earth quake?
This is as worse as numerology what he is doing.
Could there be a earth quake? Yes.
Is it because he predicted it? NO!
If that should be true, a large earthquacke should happen once a month, i dont know bout you, but i dont see that happening?
- “I fear one day I'll meet God, he'll sneeze and I won't know what to say.”
Actually, it should happen every day minus 50 minutes.
It would also mean that no big Earthquake could be build up since it would shake its energy off with low earth quake magnitude that gets the threshold.
And the moon during Japan Earth quake was basically at it's furthest point which means weakest influence.
The Moon was also in the first quarter phase, nowhere near full.
That idiot newscaster says "experts" are "increasingly" referring to the area as the "Ring of Fire." Does he think that label emerged just recently?
Jim Berkland claims with a straight face that tidal forces "release strain" and cause earthquakes. It's pretty shameful to see a scientist doing that on national television, and then he makes it worse by invoking animal die-offs. I guess that's why he's making his appearance on FOX, and why he has a history of appearing on the woo fest Coast-to-Coast AM. In the vein of Patrick Geryl, he apparently "predicted" one earthquake in 1989, and people are suddenly ignoring all of his misses since then in lieu of making him a prophet of some sort.
Criticism of this guy's ideas:

Seriously, FOX News is only slightly better than Godlike Productions for science news. Try Phil Plait instead.
That said, of course a major earthquake in North America is "imminent." There's a subduction zone just off the west coast, and of course the San Andreas Fault resides in California. The same can be said for any earthquake-prone region on the planet, and it could come about tomorrow, next week or twenty years from now.
This guy is cheating.
The locations where there were big major Earth quakes will not generate a new Earth quake since the stored energy has already been disposed of (only aftershocks). So since these 3 locations have already lost their energy, it is a safe bet on the upper right corner.
if nothing happens, the people will ignore his gamble prediction. But when something happens in that quadrant. Then he gets instantaneous fame.
You can increase your gamble by limiting your best bet on the places around the ring of fire. Further away from this ring and you have lower statistically chance of an Earth quake.
This guy is playing calculated poker with his prediction. There is no real prediction only the illusion of a prediction.
He is not a USGS geologist. He is a **retired** geologist. There is a lot of controversy about him, because some say that his predictions are not reliable at all. And we all know that no one can predict an earthquake.
