Nice to see the Daily Mail continue their trend of rational headli— oh no, wait, they've gone for the worst case depiction once more.
The Ring of Fire is the most active plate boundary on the planet, it's where the most Earthquakes occur, it's where the strongest Earthquakes tend to occur, and with the amount of populated coastline that sits right on top of it, it's a case of 'when', not 'if' a city gets shaken.
If you're sat in the area, you ought to be aware of the risks, in the same way I'd hope Australians are prepared for bush fires, for example. There should be readily available material for you to read up from various local authorities, and it's a simple case of being prepared, but knowing that you won't know when for.
Which segues nicely into the controversy surrounding Jim Berkland, so pinches of salt at the ready…
How many important earthquakes since 1989 have there been that he DIDN'T predict? I'm not even sure, but he's still being lauded for something 22 years ago.
I'm in southern San Diego County and how close to a major fault is that and should I be worried for something like a japan quake?
Ready San Diego, San Diego County Emergency Homepage as well as the general County of San Diego page will have sources of information and contact in your area. I'd suggest having a read at places like that, as well as the more general places like the USGS and whatnot, before the likes of Fox News and the Daily Mail.
I agree. I live in Wash.D.C. and we had a very small earthquake 3.2 earlier this year. Everyone seemed afraid afterwards to go outside. And Fox News and other media did not calm anyone's fears. So use the local municipality pages and read their info.
One of the things I noticed is that the media and CNN is keeping a hype by acting like it is something very exiting.
I mean look at the Japanese nuclear central problems. After nearly 7 days the media is still acting like this is something completely new and we are all going to die.
What they don't mention in the media is the work the people do locally to buy additional time to reduce the risk. Buy enough time so they can repair the damaged pumps and restore the electricity with generators. Every day saved means a shorter radius where radiation can fall down.
Also interesting is when you look in the area of Chernobyl. Nature get a chance to take back the land and flourish because people stay away from it.
Just don't look too much at what the media says. Most of it is misinformation and taken out of context.
They also say that a major quake is predicted for the 19th in california a 9.0 so I have heard but I don't know if its true because california is known for quakes and that is always a risk in california and I think if there was san fransisco and the bay area and the pacific northwest might get it bad I heard the fault line in the pacific northwest was similar to the one in japan but I don't know all of that i'm not a seismologist or scientist thats why I come here for info.
I found this article that is kind of a relief
Chance of tsunami, 9.0 quake is small in Southern and Central California, easing nuclear plant risks, officials say
Officials tried to reassure Californians on Monday that the kind of nuclear crisis facing Japan was highly unlikely at the state's two nuclear power plants.
Southern California Edison officials acknowledged that the San Onofre nuclear power plant was built to withstand a magnitude 7.0 quake — not the 9.0 temblor that hit Japan. But quake experts said the chance of a similar-sized quake —and a tsunami — occurring in the southern half of California were highly unlikely.
Los Angeles Times
There is no major quake predicted for any certain date. Earthquakes can't be predicted. They can say there is X% chance of a major quake in the next 30 years along a particular fault, but they never predict one for a certain date or even a certain year. The nonsense about the 19th came from an astrologer claiming that the Moon's perigee (closest point to Earth) on the 19th, coinciding with the full Moon would cause earthquakes and storms. In actuality, no correlation has been shown between lunar perigeee (with or without a full Moon) and any natural disasters. He also claimed that the Moon would be closer at this perigee than it has been in 18 years. Interestingly enough, if we check the lunar perigee calendar at fourmilab, we find that the Moon was 10 kilometers closer on December 12, 2008 than it will be on March 19. Did you notice all the earthquakes and natural disasters on that day? Neither did I.
Well it seem's jim berkland was wrong about his 19th quake lol
Does that reassure you at all? It should. ;-)

Yeah lol but why trust those prediction people quakes will happen at any given time though regardless if someone like that say something like that.
Well yeah, my point is even somebody who was being deemed as a knowledgeable because they used to work for a reputable science agency can't predict an Earthquake. He was being hailed as some kind of prophet, and was completely wrong.

Richard Gross, from NASA, said that:
Earth's rotation changes all the time as a result of not only earthquakes, but also the much larger effects of changes in atmospheric winds and oceanic currents. Over the course of a year, the length of the day increases and decreases by about a millisecond, or about 550 times larger than the change caused by the Japanese earthquake. The position of Earth's figure axis also changes all the time, by about 1 meter (3.3 feet) over the course of a year, or about six times more than the change that should have been caused by the Japan quake.
So, according to him, the earthquake didn't change the axis as much as natural phenomena as winds and waves do every year.
That's interesting, don't you think? ;-)
Yes very interesting I didn't know that. Also I was curious is there a connection between the Earths magnetic field and solar flares and things like that with seismic activity?
This is from quoted the spaceweather.com website.
"COINCIDENCES: Many readers have asked if this week's terrible earthquake in Japan was connected to the contemporaneous geomagnetic storms of March 10th and 11th. In short, no. There is no known, credible evidence of solar activity triggering earthquakes. Moreover, in the historical record, there are thousands of examples of geomagnetic storms without earthquakes, and similar numbers of earthquakes without geomagnetic storms. The two phenomena are not linked."

I found this and to me sounds like nonsense what are your thoughts?
5 Theories Why We’re Experiencing Increased Earthquake Activity
Planet Earth has experienced a very noticeable up-tick in earthquake activity and intensity over the last five years. Leading up to the great Japan quake, we’ve witnessed the utter devastation from the 2004 Indian Ocean megathrust earthquake and tsunami, the catastrophic Haiti quake, an axis-moving Chile quake in 2010, massive and multiple quakes in New Zealand, and record earthquake swarms hitting Yellowstone and the New Madrid Fault line in middle America culminating with the worst earthquake in 35 years to hit the area, and many more.
The devastating effects on human civilization are on full display in the most recent 8.9 earthquake in Japan. The powerful quake and corresponding tsunami showed that not even a fully developed nation with the world’s third largest economy can withstand nature’s fury. This was also evident in the New Zealand quakes which continue to demolish the first-world city of Christchurch.
Evidence of increased tectonic activity aside, the great Japan quake of 2011 will go down as the event that finally woke up humanity from their slumber to recognize the potential damage quakes can and will cause. The huge quakes in Haiti and Chile last year indicated the power of such activity, but the effects of the nuclear meltdown happening in Japan will likely have global consequences that force society to challenge our conventional path.
This new awareness of our fragile existence in the face of such powerful forces of nature has brought about many theories as to why earthquake activity is increasing. Many will brush it off as natural occurrences without understanding that everything in nature is caused by something, whether or not it can be seen or measured. Indeed, we are witnessing many earth changes happening for the first time in modern history. And perhaps all of these anomalies are connected in some way, or at least compounding nature’s recent wrath.
Here are five theories as to the cause of increased earthquake activity:
Solar and Lunar Activity: Meteorologist and astrophysicist Piers Corbyn claims a combination of solar activity and the extreme lunar cycle is the cause of the increased earthquakes. He’s not alone. On March 9th, NASA reported a powerful solar flare, an X1.5-class explosion from behemoth sunspot 1166 around 2323 UT, which they said would cause ‘global disturbances’. On March 10th, Space.com posed the question “Will March 19 ‘Supermoon’ Trigger Natural Disasters?” The very next day, the third largest earthquake ever recorded struck Japan. Many scientist have speculated the “Supermoon”, set for peak arrival tomorrow, is causing gravitational disturbances because it is the closest the celestial body has been to the Earth in 18 years.
Pole Shift:
As the magnetic pole continues to wander rapidly toward Russia, it has led to speculation that this might be leading to the record number of earthquakes seen in 2010, as well as the recent mega-quakes. According to proponents of this theory, pole shift is a geomagnetic event that exerts pressure on the Earth’s tectonic plates. As the pole wanders, the core and plates realign producing fluctuations and great upheaval until the crust can stabilize. The lights in the sky that have been recorded just prior to earthquakes may be evidence of the natural harmonic activity of the geomagnetic flux.
HAARP:
Researchers into the potential for earthquake creation cite HAARP and its various counterpart arrays around the world as a principal theory for recent mega-quakes such as those in Haiti, Chile, and now Japan. HAARP is a billion watt microwave that bounces frequencies off the ionosphere. Admitted functions are for ground penetrating radar, which some believe is a dangerous application that involves using frequencies that can disrupt the Earth’s natural magnetic field. In fact, the Department of Defense gave a briefing on the subject while discussing weapons of mass destruction in 1997. As observable evidence of such atmospheric tampering, researchers point to the correlations between visual anomalies such as colorful light displays and a characteristic wave pattern with a “punch hole” evident in cloud formations associated with these recent mega-quakes.
Climate Change: Some climatologists believe that shifting ice caps can have an effect on tectonic activity because the massive weight of the ice is changing locations. Global warming alarmists have sought to pin the great Japan quake on the disappearing ice, however they seem to lose some credibility as polar ice is actually increasing according to U.S. Navy Polar Ice Prediction System. Yet, it seems feasible that even shifting ice, which appears to be moving in the direction of the North Pole shift, may indeed affect the flotation of the earth’s outer crust. This could conceivably cause some tectonic movement and be partially related to some earthquake activity.
Gas Fracking: Since September of 2010, nearly 800 earthquakes rattled Arkansas and the New Madrid Fault Line. The entire state only experienced 38 quakes in 2009. Hydraulic fracturing is the most likely cause of increased earthquakes. Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) pumps water and chemicals into the ground at a pressurized rate exceeding what the bedrock can withstand, resulting in a microquake that produces rock fractures. A close look at Arkansas’ history of earthquakes and drilling reveals a shockingly noticeable surge in quake frequency following advanced drilling. Although, fracking is now a global technique for finding natural gas, it’s unlike to be the cause of major earthquakes in Japan, New Zealand, Chile, or Haiti.

Well that's my first 'uh-oh'…
Planet Earth has experienced a very noticeable up-tick in earthquake activity and intensity over the last five years.
Five years? Their sample size is five years? With a sample size that big, you could make it look like the Earth is getting colder, but with a sample size of much, much more, encompassing multiple sources and studies, we quickly see that that it isn't - swap climate change for earthquake stats, we can make it seem like it's getting more hectic, but upon more accurate studying we see it isn't.
Throw in some emotional arguing, rather than actual data, and you're setting your readers up to follow your each and every word.
This new awareness of our fragile existence in the face of such powerful forces of nature has brought about many theories as to why earthquake activity is increasing.
These guys are only aware of the fragility of Earth now? Have they not heard the pale blue dot speech? That aside, let's see if the many theories for an increase in earthquakes that isn't actually present have any basis in science.
Solar and Lunar Activity
Ah. Doesn't look like it then. They fail to notice the complete utter coincidence of an earthquake happening a day after a post on spaceweather. I mean seriously, that's their argument? Spaceweather poses a question, and the next day an earthquake hits. Heck, I posed a question about the supermoon online, and the next day military action commences in Libya. I guess the supermoon did that, too…
Pole Shift
There is, to my knowledge, no connection between the magnetic field and plate tectonics. If anyone knows one, speak up. To therefore base an entire argument on such a link without showing that such a link even exists, you can see how much I think of that.
HAARP
Haardy haar. It's the conspiracy theorists favourite toy these days, and rightfully earns an immediate "You've got to be kidding me, slap yourself in the face, when you realize why I've told you to do that we can have a conversation, until then, here's some tin foil for your hat." And if throwing that card into play wasn't enough, randomly linking punch hole clouds to quakes is like randomly linking double rainbows to volcanoes. Both happen, they aren't related.
Climate Change
I don't think the rate of ice loss is sudden nor large enough to jolt the Earth, but because moving large amounts of mass around the surface of a planet at once can cause quite a few interesting features (Valles Marineris on Mars, for one), it does at least get an 'ahh, well, there's a bit of thought put into that claim' from me. Not enough to show it's happened, or is even feasible of course, so we're still pouring buckets of doubt on that idea.
Gas Fracking
Interesting stats, yet to source them, so they might be yanked from thin air, and so along with that is the also to be sourced cause for any quakes. Have to say though, they aren't linking this with the earthquakes they are trying to convince you of. Bit strange, guess they're just trying to make up the numbers. Instead of this, maybe they should have had the theory "Geologically Active Planet: Welcome to Earth, this stuff happens."
