Alot of people are connecting this event to fit in to 2012, try fitting in every other major earthquake to this.

The earthquake was caused because of tectonic plates they moved wich they do all the time and this time they caused an earthquake if anyone tries to fit in this to 2012 its not true the earthquake was not caused by a not existing planet or a Over-Rated comet.

Earthquakes heppan all the time , theyre actully decreasing if you look back at the past you'd be suprised and yes we have afterschocks but they heppan normally after big earthquakes.

The way we are having all these big Earth quakes, probably means that in 2012 there will no more big one left, just silly tiny ones.

The thing is that every time a big Earth quake happens, the ground becomes stable for a lot of years because the stress has relieved.

How is this the case when there was one last year..? Supposedly there's one big one every year so I don't understand this concept haha.

Hi Amanda;

I think Obayens was joking a bit. There is a commonly held belief that many smaller quakes may prevent large destructive ones in some specific cases. I don't think that this has been shown to be true, and I'm not sure if this is what Obayens was referring to anyway.
