I was watching "The Real World" yesterday. All of a sudden the 2012 topic pops up between them. I wasn't paying too much attention to it until I heard it, and I think they all said that they believe in it. Then the "smart guy" goes on to say that there is a theory that the sun will release a giant solar storm that surrounds the Earth and our electricity won't be able to keep up and will cause the end of our civilization. Or something like that. This guy is actually a fairly intelligent individual, and he has to put in his two cents even though he really has no idea what he is talking about. Why do people just keep spreading lies about this? I'm becoming more worried about a self fulfilling prophecy, rather than anything with the Maya. Sometimes I hate the people we have to share this world with.
I'm becoming more worried about a self fulfilling prophecy…
Fortunately, believers lack the capacity to fulfill most of their so-called prophecies. I think there will be contingents of the world's population who might get a little crazy, survivalists and whatnot. I speculate that there will be people after the fact who insist that things went down exactly as prophesied. We skeptics will simply have not been in tune with the magical event, and the "new consciousness" will have come about without any noticeable change in reality. Convenient.
That said, I hope this 2012 phenomenon is not as widespread as it seems. To most people who even know about it, I think it's more of a curiosity than anything. We actively deal with the nonsense here, so naturally, people involved with the website or forum will likely notice it more than they might otherwise.
I agree with that, I don't know anyone else who talks about this and I wouldn't dream of trying to make it a topic of discussion, unless I knew someone who was scared. I do believe however, that people who should know better (media, holywood etc) are trying harder than they should to make this a big deal. I doubt a self fulfilling prophecy is likely, mostly because as 2012 draws closer, the impossibilities of each stupid theory will become more evident.

Yes that will most likely happen.
The exact same thing they claimed in 2000 whed nothing happened.
I had big fun when they said: Oops 2000 didn't happen because we forgot that we did not had a year zero so it must be 2001. LOL

You may know that we can't predict a solar storm for 2 years later. Also you may know that solar storms are not apocalyptic events, and that these guys probably watched a docudrama on Discovery Channel or History Channel and were contaminated by the lie.

Trolls are everywhere. Just don't pay attention.
