Evidently yesterday there was a 6.8 magnitude quake that happened in Burma near the Lao and Thai borders. While the Earthquake obviously was not a massive one, it seems older buildings and buildings that weren't earthquake resistant have been damaged or destroyed in villages. I am creating this thread because I figure that sooner or later we are going to get traffic here asking about this quake and I wanted to go ahead and create a place to discuss it and also allow us to get a jump on the subject. Any information on whether or not this area is normally seismically active etc. would be good to go ahead and discuss and post.

I have already answered a question on Yahoo! Answers about this and I pointed out that there are 134 earthquakes a year, on average, in the range 6.0 to 6.9, according to the USGS website.
Also, since the question was about "all these earthquakes we're having", I pointed out that reporting of it was subject to media bias according to the "There's been one big earthquake so let's give undue attention to every other earthquake even though we would normally have ignored them" rule.

The area is seismically active. Myanmar (Burma) is on the boundary between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. If you look at the map here, it's immediately to the right of the final 'n' in 'Indian'.

So every 2.7 days you will have on average an Earth quake of 6.0 to 6.9.
The same average of the rain we get here.

i also read about that-thats a shame. I think from now till dec 22 2012 people are going to jump over everything that happens-I just dont know what some want. Everyday in the world there is a fire,eq,some kinda storm,fight,riot,shooting etc..its been that way forever.And like most day I agree, 20 some odd years ago, this wouldnt even have been reported on the news, now evrything is-especially if you aregoing around the web looking for things like this. During my higschool years I barely went on the internet-recently I googled world events those years and was amazed by how much I missed

Lots of bad pictures of the aftermath. Cracked roads etc.
