Sinkholes may capture surface drainage from running or standing water, but may also form in high and dry locations.
The mechanisms of formation involve natural processes of erosion or gradual removal of slightly soluble bedrock (such as limestone) by percolating water, the collapse of a cave roof, or a lowering of the water table. Sinkholes often form through the process of suffosion. Thus, for example, groundwater may dissolve the carbonate cement holding the sandstone particles together and then carry away the lax particles, gradually forming a void.

I've seen these types of things happening for ages. It's not new, but any new sinkholes will no doubt be used by the jackals as proof of the existense of hostile travelling planets.
You got that right, Tom. Anything at all happeing in the next 21 months will be called signs of the end.
Years ago, a huge sinkhole opened overnight behind the salt plant where I was the Plant Chemist. It was right beneath the railroad tracks where we shipped salt out. I came in to work one morning and a railcar was hanging over the edge. It occurred because the old brine mining that had been done there many years before had not left enough of the salt dome to provide support for the ground.
