Would such a thing touch Earth…would the EMP turn all the earth's nuclear reactors into meltdown ? I'm not afraid of 2012, but this is an actual concern that doesn't rely on stupidity.
No, a cme can't actualy touch earth, it is stopped by earths magnetic field. What can happen in very very rare circumstances is the charged paticles from a cme can put electrics out of action in certain areas, but like I said this is very very rare. A cme usually creates nothing more than beautiful aurora or northern lights. They are a slight concern to scientists but we are getting much better at recognising large scale cme's and should be able to take the necessary precautions if such an event were to occur. The April 3rd cme will probably have reached our magnetosphere by now and as far as I can tell, it's had absolutely no negative effects whatsoever. These things happen all the time and it's not something that should overly concern you.
Alright, I was aware of most of this, except for one thing, isn't the earth's magnetic field extremely or unusually low since a while?
it's lower than average, but for the most part over the last century or so the magnetic field has been stronger than most of our history. Even without the magnetic field we still have earths thick atmosphere. A cme isn't a ball of fire, it's like an electric cloud of dust, it's pretty harmless.
Thanks, I'm just a chemistry technician, and that occupied most of my studies in my life.
I should stop visiting that GLP kook site…
No problem. Don't visit any conspiracy sites, no good ever comes of it and the false information and downright lies they pass out is criminal. Don't believe anyone who tells you the world will end in 2012, that is nonsense. Visit here any time you have a question, there's always someone ready to answer.
