I am very thankful for your site. I have had a question haunting me lately though and one of the recent posts pushed me to ask what your thoughts are. Humans have been around for around 250,000 years. Why have we all of a sudden in the last few hundred years made advancements in technology? It worries me that there were cycles of humans that have gone extinct in the past and the mayan knew about it. I know maybe to you guys it may seem far fetched but maybe just lay it out there so i can stop worrying about it…. sorry to bother u guys.
I'm not sure I 100% understand your question. Are you suggesting there's a reason that every certain amount of years entire groups of humans disappear along with all trace of them existing?
Also, where did you find out that the Maya knew this?
Just want to know before I make comment =]
For most of human history, man did little more than subsist. Nomadic groups hunting/gathering as they could did virtually nothing for advancing technology. Staying alive took up all their time.
The first big advancement to get us going was farming. Once that got started, you had people settling down, and sufficiently good yields could mean people had extra time to… do whatever they wanted.
At first, the advancements were slow. As science builds upon itself, new discoveries come more quickly. Just as much as the greatest technological innovation has come in the last 100 years, we expect to next 100 years to be even greater.
Why have we all of a sudden in the last few hundred years made advancements in technology?
I agree with ThreeFang. You can point to a number of key discoveries across human history that leap-frogged civilization forward over a scant couple of centuries, relative to the thousands of comparatively static years. The wheel, farming and animal husbandry, architecture, the printing press, electricity, the microprocessor….
It worries me that there were cycles of humans that have gone extinct in the past and the mayan knew about it.
Well, the short answer is: we have no evidence that the Maya knew any such thing. Where did you hear such a thing?
I'm sorry I should have been more clear what I meant about the mayan comment. When I said it worries me I meant that it worries me just because I find it possible despite the lack of evidence. I did not hear it anywhere. Just from me.
Its just kind of crazy that these advances came about so quickly. I guess if you think about it though we have never found another sattelite orbiting our earth that we didnt put there.

Why would you think that? Have you ever browsed the FAMSI website? Sounds like you ought to check it out.

Why? Every innovation is a logical step forward from those that came before — "on the shoulders of giants," as it were.

Nothing electronic, anyway.

Two things
First more people means more chances that at least one will get a bright idea.
Second bright ideas must be be shared so people get even more bright ideas based on the previous bright idea.
We are still speeding up and there is no aliens involved ;-)
Please read our site it explains bout they mayans etc, and where did you get 250,000 and people try to connect everything to the mayans human species have been around longer but yes whoevar can please debunk this.

Three Fang Cat explained it perfectly. It was having the spare time to do things other than just survive that allowed science and technology to begin. Not everyone had to be a hunter/gatherer. In other words, it was the beginning of Specialisation. That trend continued as science and technology expanded, until we are now in the situation where no one can be a Renaissance Man, no one today can have complete knowledge of every area of science, although it is still possible to have a good general overview.
I do not believe that there have been previous cycles of "more advanced" human societies on Earth (please don't tell me about Egyptian "light bulbs"!).
I do not believe that humans have received any help from extraterrestrials at any time in the past.
I do not believe that we "back engineered" any technologies from crashed UFO's.
I do not believe that "the ancients" knew more than us, far from it.
All of these beliefs are very common among 2012 crackpots and other species of woowoo's. It's rare to find one belief being held in the absence of the others. So why do they so often go together? Well it seems to me that what these beliefs all have in common is that they TAKE AWAY CREDIT from present day humans and present day science, and that is why the woowoo's subscribe to them.
The advancement of science is a process whereby each generation of humans builds upon the discoveries of previous generations of humans. The increasing rate of discovery is entirely to be expected, and is due entirely to our own efforts.
